1. Has anyone else had trouble with the exposure changing throughout the burst?  I know the camera has a hard time with artificial light, but sometimes even when I shoot outside it seems the levels go up and down at complete random throughout the burst.  It ruins that shot, because when I try to Twixtor it, the inconsistant frames make Twixtor go crazy.  Is it a feature on the camera that I can turn off?

Basics matter :-) Exposure is made of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. If we work in automatic what can we expect for?

V1 is basically, in burst mode, an automatic point and shoot camera. Buy the V2. V1 is a waste of money for burst shooting IMO.

2. I'm not saying the V1 does not have it's merits as novelty art making machine. At a price of 200euros for the kit it's quite good deal even tho one needs to buy a Flash to make it usable camera for general purpose photography. I seldom buy a camera just for one function. Unless it's Brand is BlackMagic.

How ever I would and I will spend my time from now on playing with Canon camera based raw video. The 1 sec limit is a BIG one for me. And with Canon Raw I have plenty of good glass to choose from allready. If the NIkon recorded 10 seconds and had panasonic 12-35 2.8 like zoom glass I might reconsider playing more with it.

V1 is a waste of money for motion picture considering the automatic shutter, when we have the V2 just for more 360 euros. Hopefully, we'll be saying the same about V2 considering the limit of 40 frames when V3 will reach the streets with 4K video but not only. Longer burst mode going with RAW is very likely to happen and would even be much more interesting than 8-bit video whether be higher rezzed or not.

3. I concur kenuck, such claims are nothing more than mere FUD, nothing you can't handle plenty of half-full glasses...

...against a pack of 8-bit combo with shitty codecs instead as alternative ;-) Bah! :P and yes, lower resolutions in disguise of 1080p world unable to other than addressed to crappy youtubes in PressPausePlay age, DR screaming video by everywhere. Worthy still photography use at the same time, then... it is to forget.

*Sigh*

This is the first real 4.6K motion and still photography system really pocketable. It does include the cheap glass, yeah. Call it cheap, as you want. Who cares? Who pays says thanks. And it won't bother artists to produce great work and with professional usage. It doesn't matter if only for 1.67 second @24fps from post for motion. As same as the whole RAW process BTW. I mean yet, V1 is a PITA with the automatic shutter and the fully V2 only for more 360 euros... Going more wrong than with an automatic shutter, it is impossible if you'll end with flickering in the end.

4. And here is another example of the merits of the outcome developed by the participants here, whether natively based on the purpose sui generis of this thread or not:

I bought myself a new V1 based on this this thread. After a few days I decided to keep it, not for its 4K raw capability, which is too limiting to be practical in my mind, but for its burst shooting capability as a street camera. At 10fps, I can keep shooting stills for 3.4 seconds, long enough to capture an interesting scene, and fast enough not to miss the critical moment. I shot 1800 pictures in a couple of hours, and the battery still showed as full. I was able to pick many keepers out of this session, improving my success rate by many folds. Moreover, it's completely silent, and the AF is always spot on. For this purpose, it's quite a unique camera, even better than the like of 1Dx or D1s. I'm happy that I stumbled on this gem.

5. Leang has now been banned for months of unpleasantness. I've had enough of it.

If a contribution isn't good for the atmosphere of the forum then it is no longer welcome in my view.

Andrew,

I don't like bans, actually, I've supported you many times on dvxuser when you were attacked there by a few of the same people in the past. And I guess you've responded in the best way to become eoshd.com in one of the most interesting sources available online for affordable motion picture acquisition. But the fact is: what the hell wants who can disagree with such unique place where it is possible to find 4K RAW moving image capture for 200 bucks?! *Sigh*

A shot is not measured in seconds, minutes or hours but in what we can do in such units of time from a fps standard, whatever length we have in hands. Just it. There are A-cameras, B-cameras etc, choose what your skills fit best, if any. Be quiet if nothing you have to add. You did it in the right way. This thread is already a milestone per se. I, for example, am used to come here in a regular basis. Stick it!

Kudos for your attitude regarding the dream of Coppola we all should share, if the art is actually the sake of it

(not any troll in disguise whoever he/she is :P)

Emanuel :-)

PS -- I can't wait to expect and probably buy V3 Nikon Series 1.

6. Here's a probably significant update on the V2. (As of today, I am an owner of that camera and sold my V1.) In my humble opinion, if you want to get serious with shooting RAW burst mode video, invest the extra $400 for the V2. It makes your life a lot easier, respectively less painful.

Here are my observations:

1. Burst mode is still either 30 or 60 fps, but now you can shoot 40 images in a row. Resolution has increased to 4.6K (4608x3072 pixels).
2. Full manual control of shutter, aperture and ISO is available. P/A/S/M modes work in burst mode just as they work normally. (As a nice extra for street photographers, the silent electronic shutter now also works in single picture mode.)
3. Drastically improved write-out speed to SD cards. With a 95 Mb/s Sandisk Extreme Pro, a 40 image burst sequence now gets dumped to the card within 16 seconds.
4. Raw burst mode now works, with all the features described above, with adapted mechanical lenses. This includes c-mount lenses (many of which are a good match for the V2 with its Super 16mm size sensor). However, there are still no whatsoever focusing aids for adapted lenses. If anyone has found a workaround, please post it here.
Shot some "raw footage" this evening which I am in the process of editing. Compared to shooting raw burst sequence with the V1, this experience was a real joy.

I hadn't read it yet. Answered it now. Thanks.

7. Weirdly it goes further at the lower rates - to 45 at 15fps and 50 at 5fps.

But yeah, 40 frames at both 30fps and 60fps. Raw, JPEG, it doesn't matter still the same number.

I'm seriously considering the V2 - just the faster write times to the card and the manual controls / adaptable lenses in burst mode are great features.

And also with 40% more resolution... Any idea on how faster is to write it for card?

8. Some people I notice are not quite getting the 1 second thing - yeah it is a very small amount of run-time but that is the beauty of it. It gives your work a theme. I already have sequences in mind that will be lucid flashes of a day, cut together - it is all in the cutting and editing. The way you sequence the clips will form your narrative, rather than letting each clip play out on its own. This is an interesting style of filmmaking.

Man, I've always defended you on dvxuser for some reason ; ) Well said :) Who doesn't understand it, they have no clue what's going in this business ;-) I've been helping to shoot a feature with a partner of mine. And I've been using the GH series' burst mode (very different of these small Nikons for sure) for 4K establishing shots.

9. (OK, I wanted to commented that quote but some bug is avoiding to add anything other than inside the quote, so, here's this new post here:)

In the same way, people shot in 35mm film to deliver VHS. This argument is nonsense. Proper 4K downsampled to 1080p, 720p, SD, etc is miles away of anything natively shot lower, as for instance, in the same resolution to deliver. Period.

*Sigh* :-)

10. 1. Although it may be a technological achievement for the Nikon V1 to shoot 4K RAW in 60 fps (for 1 second!), why exactly do you need 4K right now? Most equipment won't play back 4K. When 4K becomes more widely available (and it will) then the companies will no doubt introduce corresponding cameras, as they did with HD and 3D. But right now, I understand why companies do not see the market and the necessity for 4K, especially in the consumer or prosumer sector.

11. Yes it does the same but adds nothing new apart from the manual control in burst mode. Video mode and 400fps are the same and they didn't increase the buffer size. Another disturbing trend - yearly follow up models that don't progress the technology.

But, V2 is higher resolution 4,608 x 3,072 against 3,872 x 2,592 (V1). I guess the same difference in burst mode, correct?

i like Jeff Cronenweth style low key and lot of scenes light with practical lights...
but his best work is Fight Club ...he is not DP who can work with digital ...he and David Fincher should back to shoot with on film...
I think he's awesome, and clearly Fight Club looks the best. But the social Network looked good too.  I think the choice of camera has been more of Fincher's choice, because he likes to shoot 100 takes of everything. I wouldn't be surprised if Jeff is dying to go back to film.

Are you sure?

«I miss shooting film, but I don't miss not sleeping at night. I like going to sleep knowing I have a job in the morning rather than calling the lab at 5 and asking, "Is there an image there?" I think we're in the infancy stage of it. So a lot's going to change.»
