How does this in any way effect your 5D Mark III purchase?

They are quite different cameras. The 5D Mark III has a much larger sensor, better suited to the EF mount glass you will use on it. It is much cleaner in low light and the form factor is better. It is much lighter, runs for hours on a tiny internal battery, has no fan, uses small CF cards, gets constant firmware updates and takes 22MP professional quality stills. Blackmagic have their work cut out to compete with it.

peederj reacted to Ben Prater in High quality camera recommendations for live streaming (C100, C300 or BMCC)
The Tricaster 455 doesn't have HDMI input, it's primarily a production-grade SDI input switcher. The C300 outputs to SDI. The C100 does not. (So you'd need some kind of hardware conversion.) If you are doing field work, you can't beat the C100's form factor. It's a gift to documentary filmmakers.
The BMCC is a tool for filmmakers, not streaming -- it flourishes in a typical production workflow, especially in color grading, which you can't really do when you stream. I won't suggest using it in this context.
Based on your requirements, you should go with a C300 + C100 pairing for about $22k. The C300 will be dedicated for studio-work. And the C100 for B-cam in the studio as well as being used in the field for documentary-style shooting.

You should consider sitting down with an experienced video production company to discuss this purchase. There are a bunch of additional questions you'll need to answer -- lens choices, rigging choices, lighting choices -- and how everything can fit together in a package that allows you to really showcase your non-profit. An expert can help you see the details that may frustrate you later on.

to be brutally honest, I could care less about exact ship dates or how close they match up to promises... i'd just like to see them actually release a 4K RAW s35 global shutter camera at this price point, at some point, sooner slightly better than later, because it will put that much pressure on all the other major manufacturers to stop f****ng around and come up with an answer... with similar features at similar price point.  win win

Why can't they just add the active mount to the existing BMCC MFT?  I really want the electronic focus rack that the GH3 has.  Yes I know, buy a GH3.

No independent film maker has used this camera in its final version so we can not judge. I am personally waiting to download and grade some footage before any decision or judgment. The rest is just guessing.

After using the 5d MKIII in raw my expectations are very high. The bar has risen.

The only thing I am sure about is the ergonomics that should be much more improved.

Thank you very much for your prompt reportage and refreshing candor. I am disappointed but not surprised about the BMD4K output being worse than the BMCC, this sentiment coming from Brawley as well is the nail in that coffin. They will hold the product for the rest of the year trying to rectify that (perhaps abandoning global shutter) but I'm going to wager now that it's killed by the spring. I.e. no 4K camera from BMD for at least another year, until they can source a better sensor and one hopes create a more ergonomic casing.

I have no doubt the 5D3 has a better picture in more situations than the BMCC. I'm not even sure you need the RAW hack to get there.

What I was told today (from one of the dealers) is this:

Pocket camera is shipping is low quantities (i.e. less than 100 units, I was actually told about 10 at a time). The manufacturing is apparently happening in Singapore.

The same dealer told me that the BMCC is also still a slow trickle as well. He mentioned that even right now he doesn't have any in stock and the only way to get some in is to start calling their distributor and raise some stink to get them to move quicker. In all fairness, he did say that BM is not as much to blame as their distributors who sometimes tend to play favorites (i.e. prioritize bigger dealers like B&H vs. some of the smaller dealers).

His opinion is that the BMCC's image quality is likely to outperform the new 4K camera, he also feels that the data management will be an even greater issue since 4K footage (at the Pro Res file size) is still quite huge.

FWIW, I recently ran a test on the Alexa, the BMCC and the 5D3 (video coming soon), and even though I feel that the Alexa produces an amazing image, the 5D3 raw was IMHO a much better image than what I was able to get out of the BMCC.

Either way, these are very exciting times!!!

Some lingo for you: In R&D, "two weeks" equals "we know the issues but don't know how long it will take to fix them." "Three weeks" means "we don't know all the issues and god-only-knows how long it will be." A hard shipping date means R&D is complete and has released to production.

Just got back from the L.A. Blackmagic event today. I suspect Blackmagic is about to get ranted on by quite a few online sites for pushing back the release date that they so confidently affirmed wouldn't be an issue back at NAB.

The Blackmagic Pocket is also a slow trickle. According to some dealers yes the Pocket cameras will start shipping over the next week or so....straight to the Blackmagic offices and not to dealers! That's right, the Pocket cameras will actually first stop at Blackmagic where they will receive a firmware update, and only then will they start to be shipped to the dealers. I'm told to expect a very few trickle, so for some people who preordered the Pocket cameras, it could still be a couple of months away.

The Blackmagic Production camera was also a disappointment, not just for the delayed shipping, but also for the fact that they still seem not quite ready in the software/firmware departments.

Lastly, Resolve 10 is supposedly still on track for "3rd quarter" which could be any day, or still a couple of months away.

All in all not a particularly exciting or revealing day with Blackmagic....but they did have free cookies!

Promises Promises. How The New Millennium revived the 'Snake Oil Shell Game' of 1800's America.
    ________________________

If I had a dollar for every technology 'Gee Wiz' product rollout delay or worse, for every scam (not saying BMPCC is a scam) that collects but either delivers YEARS late or never delivers at all- I'd be filthy rich.

CASE: As a onetime Kickstarter aspirant (not a video related project) I studied the most compelling cases to learn the ropes pulled by the successful ones. Here's a typical example.
    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/midasmount/snapfocus-follow-focus-system
Funded up to 500% of Goal Net = $111,000.  Funding Period ended June 2012
I went over to thier website yesterday July 23rd, 2013 to see how things were going. Here's a screengrab of thier homepage

Here's the blurb incentive for the highest backers...
Pledge $2,499 or more 4 backers
THE DEALER PACK. Get 9 SnapFocus units that will arrive in time for you to sell them for the holiday season and one LIMITED EDITION SNAPFOCUS unit with an estimated September delivery date.
    Estimated delivery: Nov 2012 Nov 2012 - July 2013 = 8 months and counting!

So, how about thier paying customers? $111,000 is a pretty big stash for bicycle handlebars turned follow focus contraption don't you agree? You'd think a year would be enough to turn out some deliverables right?
    Have a read...
    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/midasmount/snapfocus-follow-focus-system/comments
Now. In all fairness, BMPC looks like an eminent deliverable,  but will it astound or be a flat  or incomplete delivery? Oh gosh. No 4K yet. Will they then say, oh gosh! No lens yet how about a pinehole instead? Kidding :D

I belong to about 35 Forums in about 5 domains (over 10 years) and have seen this pattern of deceit a lot. I could write a book on it but not here. It's what I've dubbed the 'Snake Oil Shell Game' . It's given birth to many awesome products and obviously some trash but also to many. many scams.
What folks need to understand is that it's NOT about customers at all. It's about how VC funding occurs in the New Millennium. Blame the dot.com era craziness on this (start ups sucking in vast sums of loose cash and going belly up rather than IPO) . In the old days, if you didn't deliver the goods, the banks would swoop in and take all your tools, property and remaing cash away from you. These days it's just a slap on the wrist a chapter 11 or 7 filing, a name or brand change and you were off to rip another community of suckers off.
The operative culprit is always ......  PREORDERS
    Don't do them. EVER
They are the trick that sucker you into financing someone else's posh lifestyle and retirement rather than yours.

There is community of people out there that have no respect for paying customers and it takes teeth pulling to get them to poney up refunds or end products. Your best bet is to stand in line for products that are already shipping. You KNOW you don't really need 'IT' ASAP, you are just feeding a psychological addiction to über-cool toys so why not play the waiting game to YOUR advantage not thiers.

You make promises like this, you anticipate the demand for the product based on the last BMCC sales, you build your company to that scale. If they don't have a PR team that is their fault, they have the money and the sales to sustain that kind of growth and they have yet to do so. You don't seem to understand that this is how companies fail. This is also the internet age, where you can get a HUGE feel for the demand of the product by simply surfing forums for christ sake. You do not remain small as a company and throw out promises that would require a business of a much larger scale to accomplish. It is perfectly justifiable to get angry at this, it is nothing short of shitty business practice. It is entirely their fault that they set deadlines (deathlines), and unfortunately for them their product has shown the demand for these kinds of cameras at this price. If they continue to produce at such a slow pathetic rate, they are only extending the window for a new company to come in and exploit the market and do it with consumer-demand in mind. They can either:

A.) Remain small and stop promising huge productions and ridiculous deadlines

    or

B.) Restructure and expand their company to sustain the demand for this product

    or

C.) Burn to the ground & watch someone else come along and do it better.

I'd like to think that BMD's silence means all is going according to plan.
It's not that uncommon to only see images once the cameras are out, they might be optimizing it till the very last day.
Most people see the 4k camera as a whole new product that will be a cumbersome task for they to overcome, but it's basically the BMCC with a different sensor, should be no big deal really.

Also, I learned that pre orders are for fools. From all the few things I've preordered lately, I got none before they were easily available everywhere else, what's the point? (on top of being a greater risk since you don't get to read all the reviews beforehand)

As far as I know, Red and Sony have never been involved in  litigation/negotiation  until this year 2013 after RED  (not Sony) sued F55, F5 and F65 for using compressed RAW. Sony counter sued in response claiming three patent violation.

Big sensor video revolution happened as a natural followup to the use of CMOS sensors in DSLRs and simply advances in producing faster and cheaper electronics that can process that data and record it to faster cards.. This would have happened regardless even if no such company called Red existed.

These advances will continue until in few years even cell phones would do 4K video. When that happens some people are going to say, look we will never have 4K on cellphones without Red, but of course that would be nonsense..It would be simply a result of cheaper and faster electronics and cheaper and faster with larger capacities flash memory cards, regardless if Red existed or not.

Actually you need a larger and more unwieldy external box: an entire computer to offload to (or if you trust one of those offloader devices be my guest) every 15 minutes. You need somewhere to put the computer, keep it powered, you need to stop the entire shoot or have an assistant for the offloads. With an external recorder like the Ninja 2, you can record all day long, direct to ProRes 422 HQ, without ever changing drives or batteries, four channel audio pre-aligned, with scene and shot and take written directly to the filenames, and you get a peaking monitor thrown into the bargain, for $695 retail with commodity drives (even rotational laptop drives) and cheap Sony-type batteries the only additional expenses. No assistant needed, no interruptions to workflow during capture or post, no transcodes, batteries are even hot-swappable if you do run out.

And they do not smell if kept clean.

As for the perfect camera, Sony F55 + R5 (also an odor-free external recorder, with a handy clip mount direct to the chassis) looks to be quite acceptable if you can't spring for the Alexa atm.

The CVP message is very sad news. Personally, I'm still waiting for the BMCC with MFT mount. And waiting, and waiting.
Sometimes a thought crosses my mind that would fit into a possible second "trickle-to-the-dealers" scenario:
What if some parts of BMCC cameras were supposed to be manufactured in the infamous special economic area of North Korea?
The whole period of BM's supply problems coincides with the shutdown of Korean political relations.

    Sounds somewhat absurd, but still...
Maybe it's just a silly guess to entertain myself in the BMCC waiting lounge.

I think you shouldn't buy anything. You already have something to play with that lets you learn film. For the handful of days a year* you need better quality than that, you should rent a professional cinema camera appropriate for the budget of your productions. Working with a professional kit will teach you more about film and what you're looking for than just a notch or two kludges up from where you are now would. And it will authentically deliver the quality you're seeking rather than just get close to it. And it will work out cheaper in the long run.

    * EVERYONE thinks that if they only got the camera of their dreams they'd be out shooting every day. That has nothing to do with reality. Professional camera operators shoot every day, and some of them have their own cameras but most use what's provided or rent. But camera enthusiasts are people who rather than take what they have (even a cellphone) and shoot with it every day they sit around and think getting a better camera is what's holding them back from shooting. Sadly no. And anyone who isn't a pro camera operator, but is instead making entire productions themselves, will learn that capture is only about 10% of the process at most. Pre- and post-production in all its forms is at least 90% of your time. So the actual cost comparison of rental has to take that reality, so strongly denied by the ambitious amateur, into account.

Plus you can usually find a friend with more money than sense who has made this error to just lend you a better camera rather than buy one yourself.
