You always learn some new incredible theory in the forums!
Didn't say that. Your definition of "cinema" leaves much to be desired.
2.
i think they suck too...probably everybody was overblown by the price thing... sure too soon to judge. 5d Mark II (with VAF filter) got a more cinematographic look, and the GH2 gives more details
lol you are cracking us up with your posts. A cinema "look" isn't defined by sensor size.  You can get shallow depth of field with smaller sensor cameras by either getting closer to your subjects or using a longer lens - or both.  A Canon MK2 or 3 still has limited dynamic range, tons of compression, poor color, massive cmos jellow.  This isn't a "cinema" look imo. And saying a GH2 will out resolve a camera that nobody has used yet is silly.
3.
Go here for the test videos: http://vimeopro.com/johnbrawleytests/blackmagic-cinema-camera They completely suck.
Average vidoes yes, but remember that Vimo is streaming these at a compressed 720p.
4.
The Revolution will be when somebody comes out with a camera TESTED on CINEMA SCREEN, a camera made for cinema that can also be used for more simple things, not the opposite.  We need a camera with plenty of options for lenses at their maximum capability, no workflow imposition (DAVINCI?!!??!?!?!?!?). It's a good step, but we need MORE.
Not sure if you understand the files this BlackMagic Cinema cam produces. The Cinema DNG files can be edited in EVERY major editing suite in the world.  And you have the option of Apple ProRes and Avid DNX. I have used Cinema DNG files from an Ikonoskop I rented and they are AWESOME.  You can even open them in Lightroom 4 and pull screen grabs as if they were a RAW DSLR file and play with shadows/highlights white balance. This is THE BEST option imo for files produced from a cinema camera. And as far as holding up on a big screen - there are TONS of 16mm type films that have done very well on the big screen - Slumdog Millionaire / Black Swan etc.
5. wow No point in the Ikonoskop if this hits the market in July at $3k. Ill buy one.
6. Red Dragon? On a side note, FilmMan did you see what Jim Jannard from Red posted? === "Why the other guys suck. So Canon releases the C300 in November. 1080P and an RGB codec. Really? $16K (or $20K depending on where and when you bought one). Then Canon releases the 1Dx (1080P and 18MP stills). This obsoletes the C300. Now they will obsolete both the C300 and 1Dx in one fell swoop… just months later. They are ready to announce a 4K motion DSLR that obsoletes all of the above. Only problem is that it won’t shoot motion RAW. Which means that you will have to buy their next camera… after you have bought one of the others… or more. Let’s add up the cost. And the next one won’t have frame rates… but maybe the one after will? Sony sold some of you on the F3 (1080P) camera. But they knew they were going to obsolete those before you ever bought one. The NEX 4K will be announced. But it doesn’t shoot RAW. That will be sometime after you buy one of the previous. For less. And then you’ll need to buy a special recorder. For more. My problem is that these companies string you along. They give you part of what you want. Just enough. Then sell you the next one… almost there. Then the next one. By the time you are done you could have bought a real camera. I was personally plagued with this scenario for years. It is the reason I decided to start RED. I couldn’t take it. The seduction turned to frustration. But it seems like these companies can’t help themselves… they continue to do it. At your expense. Just venting… Jim Jannard" === Gotta agree with almost everything he said.

Any final work on the cloud hosted pricing of their suites? $50 a month?  $600 a year? hmmm.
8.
Sara, A camera manufacturer could clean up if they provided some good specs for the sub $5K market.  Check out another Sony possible surprise: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/
Sort of. Remember that a Sony FF DSLR will likely use their SLT technology.  And while it is great for AF and the tracking of moving objects - sports/wildlife - it REDUCES image quality. Film makers rarely AF (if ever) and they would want to REMOVE the SLT mirror (if possible) to get the best image quality.  That and imo the form factor of a DSLR isn't the best for high end video. I have used an a77 a lot (fun but not a professional tool) and its SLT design has serious limitations.  But more competition the better!
9. Big win for Sony. Though imo all manufactures still fail. 2012 and we still don't have 12 bit color 1920x1080 for under $5k.  While 4k is awesome, I run into so many people doing heavy keying and blue screen work (cost of digital post production tools is very low today) that they rent Alexa and Red Epics but would love to "own" something cheaper. Oh well.
10. Funny thing is that the Canon 1DX was announced nearly SEVEN 7 months ago - and still hasn't shipped yet. We have a LONG way to go before we see these cameras in the hands of reviewers and see what they are capable of.  Even if they ship soon, their price is way up there to protect the 1DX and C300 (overpriced).  Sony might mop up if the FS700 ships soon.
11. https://vimeo.com/39839187 Wonderful.  Thanks for alerting us. The FS700 is looking to be a VERY well rounded and versatile video monster. Though I don't care for how this sample was graded (brownish tone) you can't argue with the slow motion results. Sony won't be able to produce enough of these if they are indeed under 10k. :)
12. If you live in the US, both lensrentals and borrowlenses will rent GH2s, FS100's for very cheap.  Try them out and like others have said, after NAB (Canon and Sony releasing new models) we will have a better picture of what prices will be like for this summer. IMO the best way to go is to start with a GH2 (or 2), hack it, sell it when your ready to upgrade.  A hacked GH2 on ebay will sell for only a $100 less than what you pay for it - so you are essentially renting a camera for pennies a day. Cheers!
13. Splash http://mirillis.com/en/products/splashexport.html Have fun!
14.
Sara,  are you saying the first consumer 4K video camera will be a dud? JVC4K
$5,000 isn't consumer pricing.  You won't find it at a Best Buy selling like crazy.  Consumer video products in the US that have mass appeal are usually priced under $2k. Not saying it doesn't have FANTASTIC video quality (and your color correction is great!) but with a lens so limiting - there is no point.  You gotta agree that shooting nothing but mid to close up shots gets boring real quick. Sony will likely (they are the king of sensors) have a 4K competitor at a lower price soon - hopefully one with a more useful lens and without having to use 4 memory cards at once. CHeers!
15. Nobody will buy this.  And I mean nobody.  Look closely. You have a high resolution camcorder that would be perfect for landscape and architecture work - but a lens that can't shoot wide angle.  I watched all the sample clips and was waiting and waiting and waiting for a dramatic wide angle shot. Then I realized that the lens can't shoot wide angle. Specs:  (35 mm conversion: 42.4-424 mm) OUCH! I understand JVC's wanting to use a lens capable of maxing the tremendous detail of 4k - but unless you shoot ONLY standard to telephoto all the time, the camera is useless.  You can of course screw on an optional wide angle convertor but JVC has a warning that claims that the stacking of glass prevents 4k resolution - so you are back to a soft wide angle shot for $5,000. Nothing cramps creative style and the ability to tell a cinematic story than having to start filming at 42mm - you can't shoot establishing shots or dramatic environmental shots. Like JVC's other recent camcorders - it will be forgotten before the end of 2012. Bummer.
16.
I think it's important to not just compare specs and features but to also compare the looks that these cameras create.  Personally, I love the look of the footage shot with the MII.  I am still thinking of adding a MIII for the low light features but I'm not in a particular hurry to pull the trigger.  The FS100 sounds like an amazing camera but the footage looks very stale and flat to me.  Very "video-y".  Yeah, I know, that's very technical of me to say...  I really want to see the MIII and the FS100 footage side by side.  I'm also worried that cutting the 5D MII footage in with the FS100 footage won't look great.
I think you got those two confused - imo MK2/3 are far more videoy vs an FS100 or F3 But if you really want to ditch the video look rent/buy the Ikonoskop A-cam - global shutter, raw, very soft organic look to the files with milky shadows.  Dynamic range is limited and the small sensor would probably make super shallow depth of field tricky, but it does produce a very pleasing image. https://vimeo.com/28717821
17. In the Red Scarlet / C300 category you forgot the Sony F3.  It is $13,999 with S-log free now and in the US a $800 rebate - $13,199 is a steal for dynamic range second only to the Alexa. Cheers!
18. https://vimeo.com/38957580 F3 and FS100 wow!
19. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1899353/?licb=0.9907206244158986 Anyone have a chance to see this yet?  It opens is select theaters in the USA today (23rd) and my husband and I can't wait to see it - the choreography looks incredible. http://youtu.be/PkULMOFpuCo http://youtu.be/ffm5S_JWIKQ We all know hacked GH2's have better picture quality than an AF100 - so if these guys can pull off a decent movie for a measly (considering) $1.1 mill - there really are no excuses these days.  Fun stuff !!!
20. Though not GH2 or C300 or FS100 levels of detail - this is the best I have seen from the D800 thus far.  He overexposed a lot of shots and the colors are a touch flat (true of all D800 videos so far - not his fault). Interesting though. https://vimeo.com/38912704
21.
Sara, is there something between you and Andrew ;) Don't want to start rumours but I wish I had a GF who stood by me thick and thin like you do with Andy :(
LOL ! I just rent TONS of gear with my husband and have a collection (trying to sell some of it) similar to Andrew.  Andrew and I don't always agree and there are threads to prove it. I enjoy the psychology of gear and why people buy / choose what they do - So I seem to understand what film-makers think when they make their purchases.  When you learn the "why" behind what gear people gravitate towards you can get your mind spinning about possible uses for your own personal projects.  IE all these tools have their quirks that are fun to exploit. But to answer your question completely - no I have no affiliation with EOShd - just a fan.  My husband and I live in the USA and Andrew is way across the sea.  Cheers!
22. Thanks for sharing - looks good on a small screen, but there is virtually no detail in any of the shots.  But to be fair these are complex scenes that you filmed.  Not a strength of the Canon MK3.  Like andrew said in his review, shooting the MK3 for landscapes and lots of movement creates mush - a tight closeup with a sharp lens is the best way to use the MK3's strengths. As TV's and computer monitors grow above 1920x1080 resolution the MK3 is going to look worse and worse in the future. :( That being said, I LOVE the 35mm F2.0 Zeiss lens you shot with - I always felt it had stunning color and enjoyed its close focus performance. Take care!
23. To all those wondering why Andrew and LOTS of other people are using the FS100 "now" vs when it was first released - A LOT has changed with this little Sony monster of a camera. #1. Price drop #2. HDMI out supported by more external devices like the Hyperdeck 2 (now both uncompressed and AvidDNX) - Though the internal 28mps AVCHD is VERY good. #3. Some AMAZING new color log profiles by AbleCine and Frank Glencairn http://frankglencairn.wordpress.com/ #4. Tons of new E-mount adapters and a few new excellent E-mount lenses like the 24mm F1.8 Zeiss #5.  Though not new, Focus Peaking is something that once you use it, you will curse every camera that doesn't have it. Plus all these new features to be added with a new firmware update any day now (if they haven't already). Click this link below for a complete list from Sony. Added the following Aspect-Ratio markers: 2.35:1 - How cool is that!!!? http://tiny.cc/2palbw Sony is being VERY aggressive with the FS100 as of late. I didn't care for the FS100 when it was first released either - but now is makes a LOT of sense. Sony NEX FS100 Profile Test
24. Simco123 I just misunderstood - again - what you were saying.  My fault. :) Well unless Andrew is able to find something special about the MK3 nobody else can, and while we all wait for a hack, is there anyone that believes that 1DX is worth 7k for video?  Or is the 1DX going to be the same as the MK3? I think rental houses are going to have a VERY busy summer with FS100, F3, C300, Red MX, Red Epic, Alexa cameras for indi film makers.
25.

People saying here that GH2 has no comparable DR to MKII must be insane or never touched it! Really!!
You need to go to Specsavers. 5D2 has great DR, only wish GH2 has the same nice nice roll off and not clipping highlights.
I don't agree, nor do many professionals using the 5D.  Watch the Zacuto productions where the filmagraphers who actually use the 5D for big budget work clearly state (as do the tests) that the 5DMK2 does NOT have a lot of usable dynamic range.  Don't confuse dynamic range with what a DP would consider acceptable for a film - mushy video with little detail isn't usable dynamic range.  Sure you might get an image - but there is no point. Watch this episode: The Great Camera Shootout 2011: Episode 1 ~ "The Tipping Point" Not trying to bash the 5D nor am I saying the GH2 is great either.  I owned a 5D and am hoping the MK3 has something special was well (still waiting).
