1.
if he hasnt been able to unlock true 1080p resolution for the past three years on the relatively easier to hack t2i, what makes you guys think it'll be easy if he sets his mind to it on the mk3? seriously, if it even is possible, it could take years. :/
Never though of it that way.  Well put. I think Canon just screwed all the preorder people and I feel sorry for stores having to deal with disappointed customers - but that is the gamble people take I guess.  Looking forward to more samples from Andrew because I am sure he can bring out the best from the MK3.  :)
2. It would be incredible if Canon at NAB announced a firmware hack to enable 4k on the MK3. The only thing that makes this claim suspect is that all the new Canon 4k Cine lenses DONT cover FF sensors - so why would they create these half dozens lenses (already shipping) that wouldn't work on the MK3.  They must have made these for a different camera. One can hope - but right now the Canon MK3 isn't what everyone expected.
3. Well since this "reviewer" ie Andrew actually owns the MK3 as well as a half dozen other video shooting cameras AND a well hacked GH2 and the rest of us don't....I would tend to believe what he says. These "so called" other sites that review DSLR video rarely hack the GH2 to the level Andrew does nor do they test other cameras like the C300, Sony F3 running S-log or the Red Scarlet.  The C300 does indeed shoot resolution worthy of calling itself a 1080 camera.  As does the GH2.  That is what Andrew was using as a benchmark.  Canon is clearly protecting their newly released $16,000 camera and the forthcoming $7,000 1DX.  Even Canon employees when pressed will admit that - companies do this (car companies especially) and that is part of life - we speak with our wallets though...in the end it is our choice what we buy. Everyone agrees that the MK3 in the right hands can be stunning - ANY tool can - but I don't for second buy the argument that movie goers can't tell the difference between different types of tools used.  To the degree gear nuts and pixel peepers do?  Not likely, but they can tell.  At my college, girls with no cinematography background complain CONSTANTLY about a "cheap video look" when they view Canon 5D footage because of its CMOS wobble, low resolution, and thick pixelation.  They grew up with real film and are used to digital processed by Hollywood (Alexa and Scarlet) in ways the average user can't achieve.  Remember that the MK3 costs $3,500 and is being released nearly 4 years after the MK2.  It is to be expected that everyone had high hopes for the camera. Even Canon sponsored pros question the MK3 development: http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2012/03/01/canon-5d-mkiii-my-thoughts/ Consumers gain nothing by blindly accepting mediocrity.  The entire RED company and every movie created with those products wouldn't exist if other companies were creating perfect products - they found gaps in the market and went after it....and if Canon and Nikon and Sony continue down this path, Red, Alexa, or someone new will chew up their "video" market share. That being said, I don't think Andrew was even that harsh on the Canon MK3 anyway - he clearly states that he enjoyed using it and it can compliment other cameras.  And for all we know a hack might be released for it this summer boosting the resolution.  *crosses fingers* Happy shooting! PS:  Don't get me started on that whole "Leica isn't up to L glass comment"....oh boy....  :)
4. Hi ronald - depends on your editor of choice. The newest Adobe Premiere Pro will chew through your footage without transcoding and have NO trouble.  Some people claim a slightly better performance using tools like http://rarevision.com/5dtorgb/ but the improvement might not be noticeable.  Have fun!
5. To everyone complaining about the gh2 2x crop.  #1 it is actually 1.86.  #2 good luck getting Sharp corners with your ff dslr wide open.  Interviews with the cinematographer who shot the house episodes on the mk2 had him saying that it was a mistake that they shot so wide open.  Ff is brutal on even zeiss or l glass.  The results are not pretty. There is a reason most PL glass from cooke, schneider, leica cine, and red is NOT ff. The work around if you shoot canon ff is to crop the image but if what Andrew says is correct about the low resolution, your final image won't look good.
6.
Hmmm... This is really disappointing about the resolution. I think I'm going to take a pass on this camera until the 4K CDSLR comes out. I want true HD for that price. I thought in your previous 5D3 article with the footage grading you said that the resolution was hugely improved over the Pre-Production models? What happened? Why the discrepancy?
Remember that being improved over the MK2 is one thing - the GH2 is another.  The new hacks from PTOOLs are pushing the GH2 into a category all their own.  Canon knew this all along - hence the lack of 1080p files anywhere to show what the MK3 is capable of.  They were padding preorders in the hopes of tricking customers plain and simple.  Every Canon rep I know and talk to knows about the hacked GH2 - they are not oblivious to it - they knew - and they knew they couldn't compete. The real question is how long MK3 customers will have to wait for a Magic Lantern hack to boost bit rate (might help) or possible flat log-type color profiles to increase dynamic range and help with the shadow mush.
7. Well even if the camera is a mixed bag - Your sample screen grabs Andrew are STUNNING.  Your talent and analysis of the MK3 are very helpful to everyone wondering what it is capable of. Can you describe the noise you are seeing in the shadows?  One of the tell tale signs of a cheap digital production is that blotchy pixel noise.  Though probably limited in dynamic range, current GH2 patches DONT have this problem - the noise if tight and filmic in nature.  Looking forward to experiencing your final video shot with this camera. THANKS ANDREW!
8. I think the Canon MK3 might be the best of the bunch for video - I am not thrilled with what I have seen but I could work with it and make use of the Cameras strengths. Is anyone following the Magic Lantern groups?  Are they mentioning that they will work on hacks for the MK3?  Too early to tell? Thanks!
9. Nice.  That's a pretty good guess Simco123.  You might be right.  :)  The 1DX doesn't really fit the needs of landscape or commercial photographers despite its price.
10.
I will waite for NAB next month to see if the Canon 4k comes out and what the price is. If nothing comes out or price too high I will go with the 5DIII.
The Canon 4k DSLR will be expensive I think. Think about it, it will have a new sensor and processor (even the C300 recycles parts from one of Canons camcorders) and will have image quality above the 5D and 1DX right?  Well those are $3500 and $6000 cameras.  With the C300 priced at $16,000 it would have to be priced under it (and with a few less features - skimp on audio perhaps). If it was $10,000ish would you be interested?  I mean it can't be at the same price as the 5DMK3 - it would make that camera useless.  Also remember that the Sony F3 (a monster if you have a good external recorder) now comes with S-log free for $13,999.
11.
Sara, did you actually bought a D800 for video?
Was VERY close.  I do need a high MP camera for production stills and stock photography that I do - figured the D800 would fit the bill (and the D800e still might).  But if I couldn't get good video from the D4 my shop had - I don't have much faith in the D800.  I can rent Pentax 645 or Hassy or buy a Sigma SD1M for less money than the D800e if the video doesn't pan out.  I still have 2 GH2's left (just sold my third on ebay to help pay for new KinoFlo Barfly lights).  http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7203/6827655408_d2b0cb8531.jpg Finding an "all in one" camera that does the stills I need and GH2 quality video is tough.
12. Youtube is flooded with D4 video tests from dozens and dozens of people. http://youtu.be/MRUx4OozWjY Every video is poor, but at least most of these D4 owners admit that they will use the camera mostly for stills.  Mushy, low contrast, virtually no color depth, blown highlights, plugged shadows with tons of harsh pixels.  Andrews initial skepticism of Nikon internal processing and hiding high quality videos from the public was criticized months ago by other blogs, forums and Nikon fanboys...but he is now being proven right.  Those people have egg on their face right now. NOBODY is able to get quality video from the D4 or D800 internally right now.  My local shop has given up and now warns buyers that they are imposing heavy restocking fee's - a few people have already tried returning D4's because of mush video.  I would post samples I took but there is no point - they look exactly the same as the sample above - lifeless and videoish.  So the only hope left is a $1000 Atomos Ninja or the Blackmagic Hyperdeck (also expensive when you add a decent SSD) and I don't own one of those. Canon MK3 is the last hope for this round of cameras I am afraid though I am hoping to be proved wrong. Bummer!
13. I love that digital rev guy.  To each their own. :) And Nikon themselves claim that the HDMI out on the D4 and D800 is 8 bit color - not sure why everyone is saying that it is 10bit.  I thought any 10 bit you see is a conversion from the external recorder and not actually captured by the cameras sensor. I would LOVE to be wrong on this - so if someone can show me otherwise, please do! It is tricky to understand because of the wording on the page of the Atomos Ninja: http://www.atomos.com/press/articles/press004-NikonD4.xml Basically says the Ninja can collect 10 bit color - but doesn't specifically say that it will, when plugged into a Nikon D4. http://youtu.be/LZATZwojnKM And to make matters worse, we have this guy who shoots for the BBC in the video below.  Nikon let him test the camera and the results were terrible.  Even he complained that the picture quality was soft and mushy and that Nikon told him there was nothing they could do about it. https://vimeo.com/35858338
14. So far so good (except for the jello vision - but I don't pan fast so no worry to me - but for those hand holding without a glidecam....video won't look great). Thanks Andrew for teaming up with Sam to share your findings!
15. The still images really are special from all the samples I have seen.  My local shop gets them in soon - might get one because there are now a few Leica M adapters for it. Have you had any fun with the film simulation modes?  I LOVED shooting Astia when I was younger - all my girlfriends and boyfriends skin looked so smooth and velvety when we would shoot through rolls. Cheers!
16. For those who care about stills from the D800 imaging-resource posted lots of samples - and they are stunning.  They were very impressed. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d800/nikon-d800A.HTM "We received the 36.3-megapixel Nikon D800 and Luke immediately got to work shooting our Still Life target. Peering at the images, we were astonished to see enough detail to capture and clearly render the threads in our dreaded Red Leaf fabric, a feature of our standard Still Life target. Awesome." And the D800E will do ever better.
17.

that kodak sensor is very good ... its big brother of a cam dll sensor ... i dont know how they get such a ugly image from great sensor ...
thats why i believe that a cam dll is not good camera too) its footage has same strange look too
People just don't know how to process the footage from the Ikonoskop.  When done right it should look like this: http://youtu.be/U_MHPWgp8Qc I am not saying that I like small CCD's but they are not as bad as people make them seem imo.
18. Is there a video anywhere of this prototype working besides this one? vimeo.com/38252059 In the video it is nothing more then a lens on a box with a cable out.
19.

May I correct and say that in audio, edge goes to Canon and not to Nikon. The D800 does not allow audio adjusting after pressing the rec button. Canon does! Thanks. Johnnie
OK. How about audio QUALITY? Funny how it never comes up in most forums. (Unless it's a q&a on how you can get pro audio with a toy zoom and a toy videomic for under $200 when in reality you can BARELY get into a pro audio kit with REAL equipment for $3K.) DSLR pre-amps are crap. The recording quality is crap. No XLR inputs = toy. Period. Now with the moire fix, LACK of professional audio is the main hindrance to professional use of these cameras. "But I can dual record and use Plural Eyes!" Yeah, you can. Or you THINK you can. Until at some point you forget to hit the blinking red record button on your zoom toy. Or at some point you get a corrupted file with the cheap SD card. Or you just understand from the get-go that for day-to-day workflow, dual recording is a major PITA. For the rest of us who actually pay our bills with our day-to-day video work, it's going to take a bit more than audio adjustment function to turn dslrs into A cams. Sorry--not railing on you personally. Just bugs me that no gives a rat's ass about something that is actually more important to most video professionals than all this other stuff combined.
While I agree with everything you said - on camera audio quality is really only important to run and gun / journalistic type videographers.  And with the new Rode mikes coming out like the Rode VideoMic HD (friend tried one at CES and love it) - it is even less of a concern. The number of people who use the Zoom and new Olympus (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/830941-REG/Olympus_LS_100_LS_100_Multi_Track_PCM_Recorder.html) out number "on board audio guys" 100 to 1 (at least where I live). So for manufactures to spend time and money (upping costs to consumers) on audio that could be handled better off camera .....doesn't make that much sense. Remember film?  The same techniques are used today to capture audio - a few more steps but it really isn't that bad. Cheers!
20. oh no!  not good.  I assume you have done a full format "in camera" of the memory cards? Also check your battery - swap if for another new one.  After market batteries or faulty factory ones can mess up video badly because of how intensive video is. Best of luck.
21. mniles - I understand (we all do) your frustration.  You made a great post, didn't seem like a rant.  Everyone is in a "wait and see" mode right now.  Good news is that we have people like Andrew who run this website / forum who are tireless in their efforts to bring us news about tests done on these 2 cameras.  Keep visiting this website and check the forums because that is really the only way to learn what people think about the D800 or the MK3. My fiance works with the Alexa on commercial sets and the still photographer guys that document productions - sending back dailies to producers and stills for advertising - are in EXACTLY the same dilemma as you (also with the D4 and 1DX).  They want to shoot video clips with their stills of cars, locations, actors, but the lack of decent sample videos is having them hold off on ordering anything.  And this is true of hundreds of production houses across America. They have the money to buy / pre-order....but won't until they can test (or read a solid test of a production unit) each camera. We are all playing the waiting game. Cheers! PS:  If these 2 cameras turn out to have very similar video - it will be a matter of the stills then for how important each camera will be to you.  If you do more commercial photography in a studio, stock photography or still life and landscape work, the D800 is most likely your best bet - D800e for $300 more an even better bet.  But if speed and low light, street shooting etc are your thing, pick up a MK3. IMO lenses are a wash for both systems - both have excellent glass and renting lenses for Canon and Nikon is both cheap and easy.
22. http://presscentre.sony.eu/content/detail.aspx?ReleaseID=7366&NewsAreaId=2 Comes out in june.  About $549 I believe. Depends on how small and light you want to go - but having something that can fit in a pocket or pouch and has 10x with waterproofing is fun.  Still has a large (for its size) 1/3 inch CMOS chip inside. Not sure if you have rivers or lakes nearby but shooing underwater video is nice to have - and since it is weatherproof and shock/drop proof you won't have to baby it when you are out in the wilderness.  The form factor is a bit different but they are not that difficult to get used to and sony stabilization works well.  Combined with a small tripod or flexpod / gorilla pod it can go anywhere. PAVP's recommendation of a hacked GH1 is also a great idea.
23. The math is beyond me but since the C300 is a 4k sensor and through oversampling it gets 1080 - is it at all possible that Canon would shock everyone and unleash a firmware update (free or paid) for the C300 to unleash greater resolution? Possible? The new Canon Cinema lenses are 4k and they were announced at the same time. If not then they are really in a weird spot having to create something less or more expensive.
24. Speaking of great lenses - has there been any testing of the newly announced Macro 60mm or the 75mm F1.8?  Still concepts?
25. yup dumb.  end of story.  for months everyone as known the video on it would be worthless.
