1. Great article about Panasonic GH2 shooting for news: http://tiny.cc/mg0at
  2. Another option: I tried one of these this morning and was pleasantly surprised.  $499 Olympus 12-50mm http://tiny.cc/7gbtb (3 part review - he covers macro, the wide, and the tele abilities of this lens) While it isn't suitable for low light or shallow depth of field work - the focal range is great, the af motor was great (esp during video) and the macro was VERY good. Something to consider if you are unsure of what focal length to start with.  This gives you all of them and you can go from there. Cheers!
  3.
Don't like either the RR or Kipon adapters really... Hopefully Metabones will help us out in near future
Good thing you mentioned that.  I was going to buy the Kipon for my 135mm F2.0 (one of Canons better lenses).  Now ill wait.  Thanks.
  4. This film didn't get a lot of attention but it was shot on the c300 as well: OUT OF TUNES I like it - however the skin tones (prehaps the original file is better) looks shit - not ripping on the C300 because I liked the mobius skin tone - obviously VERY careful processing is needed when dealing with a limited color space. The super shallow depth of field gets annoying in the video quickly but oh well. There was an original file somewhere but blogs around the web tore it apart - shame because the editing and directing was cool.  Canon pulled it and now all that is left is the streaming version on vimeo and the european Canon site. Also this one: The Ferry | Canon C300 But its subject matter is boring and simple.
  5. My vote is the Voigtlander 25mm F.95.  * 50mm field of view is wonderful - normal and capable in almost any situation (slightly boring but being creative with composition does help). * F.95 - F2.0 and F4.0 are where I shoot it the most often but having F.95 is awesome "when you need it" - nothing else comes close. * Amazing build quality and great manual focus throw * Stunning close focusing, its not a macro lens but with the extended tele conversion it sure seems like it * Nice bokeh - slightly tear dripish but solid none the less * Very little distortion * Will hold its value for a long time If you can't afford the Voigtlander then the Panny 20mm F1.7 is a good option though I hate its 40mm focal length. Cheers!
  6.
I'm afraid that's the most logical move for a company in this situation :(
Yup but the consumer obviously suffers.  That is the trouble with convergence.  The smartest of companies will realize that once an over saturation of convergence happens, they will need to break divisions into strong "divergence" to maintain profits and customers.  The pro's will seek out high quality "divergence" products (think the strong sales of Rhode mics because of poor DSLR audio) and lower end consumers will shop based on price alone (starting to happen right now - lack of interest in 3D TVs).  This is how the current market is segmented.  When Canon blend a mush of tech into 20+ different products and the "divergence" pro see's a watering down, they won't bite. I don't predict C300 sales to be very strong.  Rental houses, maybe...but thats about it. My .02 cents
  7.

Could well be Canon protecting the sales of the APS-C dSLRs by down grading video quality in the G1X. If you want great video you really need the flexibility to use different lenses. The G1X cant do that so no need to have good video.
Or they will protect the C300 sales by giving crap video to anything below that price range (DSRLs included) like Sony did
Exactly! what I (and I think andrew as well) is afraid of.  :(
  8.
We need one of these Canon lens adapter for the GH2.
http://store.redrockmicro.com/livelensmft or the kipon http://philipbloom.net/2010/12/17/ne-adaptor-for-using-you-canon-eos-lenses-on-gh1-gh2-af101/

    Canon C300 Price

Yes I know, but do you really think it will out perform their $16k C300?  Doubtful.

    Canon C300 Price

$15,999. Seems about right.  If - I have not tried it - it competes against a Red Scarlet, the Red is about the same with everything you need for it as well. The trouble is that like a lot of products from all the big brands - Canon, Panasonic, Sony - it is crippled with what it probably could be capable of shooting for its price point.  The lack of a more robust color space is frustrating (though I do admit to liking the sample videos I have seen).  This means that it is unlikely that the 1DX will top if for quality and I doubt any Canon 5D MK3 will either. Sony do the same thing by limiting bit rates and color except in their highest models (F3 and beyond). Does Fuji care about video? The one company that has nothing to fear about cannibalizing "higher end camera / camcorder products" is Nikon.  They could go all out and have a $6k D4 that gives video shooters everything they desire....but did they?  Why are D4 4:2:2 raw samples not available?  I fear that their dependency on Sony for sensors might limit what they are capable of (even with their own tweaks) video wise.

    KineRaw

Old guy looking around kinda creeps me out but... Looks good to me - these 16mm sensor cams always seem to scale so well - downloaded the files and watched them on my 40inch TV - looked fab. KineRAW-S8p (tm) lens test reel #A2 w/o links I am rooting for them!

    GH2 Workflow

Running CS5.5 - (imo stay away from older versions - big strides were made by Adobe with AVCHD in the newest builds of Premiere Pro) If you can't afford the full version - if you are a student you qualify for a discount - you can also go for adobes monthly payment to lease the software. Core i5 2500k, 16gb ram, nvidia GTX560, Samsung SSD 830 and a mix of other 1-2 TB HDDs. http://tiny.cc/vogvt (that will show you how to enable cuda cores for a boost for lots of different Nvidia cards) If you go PC make sure you motherboard has a Z68 or X79 chipset (newest and most robust). And if your building yourself a machine, newegg.com is the place to start.  They have videos that walk you through it.  If you want a prebuilt machine, Cyberpower do have a decent rep. Cheers!
  13.
Makes me want to get one. My buddy who is an owner of a Sony camcorder says Sony stuff can be an expensive proposition. I looked at some of those accessories and lenses and agreed.
? Read some of Andrews articles about the camera and how to rig it with 3rd party lenses and adapters. http://tiny.cc/01725
  14.
I think soon enough, we will start seeing some really good stuff from the "DSLR" crowd. It is getting to the point where the world will be saturated with great gear. It soon will be easy to get a set of good cameras together, and make a film. Those of us that are truly passionate about filmmaking I'm sure will start to do some high caliber stuff once the dust settles. I for one am still in school, so I'm learning a lot of storytelling and technical stuff. I also see this as a time to collect a set of tools and learn how to use them, so when I'm done with school, I can take a crack at  my own film.
I think we already have. The 3rd Letter Its all there - a solid script, decent acting, stunning digital paintings etc. Behind the scenes:  http://the3rdletter.com/36behind.html No doubt the tools are in place for everyone with a few grand.  And with Adobe renting their software on a monthly bases there is no excuse any more.  Good times for everyone! 15. Fantastic tests Samuel H.  Thanks for sharing - I am sure this will helps lots of people.  wow.
  16.
Of course I already knew only a small down sampled version of the FF output are used for video. When I said the 5D2 has more dynamic range what I really meant was the point of video capture and that it don't clip highlights as much as say the GH2, not the actual DR latitude contained in the video which I'm aware of during editing. My comparison is not with the big guns Alexa, Red et all but certainly video cameras that are $2k-$3k but you are right about stills and video which I never made comment about. I have used the 2mp size stills captured on video from my 5D2 and it is crap so no confusing here.
Understood.  I see what you were getting at.  :) I personally don't think the 5DMK2 is all that great for dynamic range - nor do any pros who shoot with it (listen to the audio in the zacuto shootout where they mention that they doubt it can even get 11 stops). Course I guess its a whole nother can of worms to discuss "usable dynamic range" - ie how much detail, how accurate the colors etc.  Anyway back to the D4! Anymore info about it?  Anyone?  Anyone shoot with it a bit at CES?
  17.
What the FF dSLR video has that most other more expensive dedicated video cameras don't is a big sensor and dynamic range.
Actually that is a huge myth. Dynamic range - usually awesome because of the FF sensor - is really only available when shooting stills.  Remember that video uses a VERY small portion of the sensor.  Not to mention that the lack of raw output when shooting video from all DSLRs reduces dynamic range even more.  Proof: The Great Camera Shootout 2011: Episode 1 ~ "The Tipping Point" FF gets you "sometimes" lower noise and the ability to get shallow depth of field.  Thats about it. Don't confuse shooting stills with shooting video.
  18. If everyone is so crazy about 4:2:2 and color and uncompressed output - nobody should even consider the Nikon or Canon.  Save up another 6k and buy the Ikonoskop A-Cam DII.  Superior 12bit color, true raw, better form factor, Global Shutter - no jellow effect like what the Nikon D4 suffers from, CinemaDNG files for superior color grading and future proofing of files.  (RED Skarlet "starts" at over 15k and the form factor isn't that great) http://youtu.be/U_MHPWgp8Qc If Nikon were confident in the video of the D4 we would have seen better samples at launch.  Sure vimeo compression is reducing quality a bit, but when a $800 GH2 out resolves it - there is no excuse.  Watch this Philip Bloom low light shootout.  Even though the large sensor DSLRs show very little noise - they also show very little detail.  Everything is mushy - whats the point? The Christmas Shootout: Part 2 Nikon and Canon are aiming the D4 and 1DX at photojournalists, wildlife, and sports shooters.  I hope to be proven wrong but I doubt either will "wow" people away from more dedicated video tools.  Maybe we all just need panasonic to wow us with a GH3.
  19.

Resolution aside - its the jello wobble effect that I can't stand seeing in DSLR movies.  Lots students I know are getting sick of the Canon 5D jello effect as well and are dumping their gear in favor of renting more expensive Alexa / Red / SI-2k equipment. Im saving for a Ikonoskop personally.
It just depends how much you move the camera. I stay away from too many whip pans and sideways sweeps. I think it is a shame if students are renting such expensive gear, because part of learning and being creative is to overcome the limitations of a camera, not throw money at the problem until it disappears. If I were a student now, I'd feel pretty spoilt with all that DSLRs have to offer and I wish I had them in my university days.
True.  But you have talent - tons of it - and you learn your gear.  My fellow film school students don't and they are always in a hurry.  I can't get any classmates to sit through Andrei Tarkovsky's STALKER movie, or Oldboy by Chan-wook Park - both are brilliant imo. I think renting or buying and quick selling isn't that expensive if you only shoot once or twice a quarter for big projects.  It is so tough to find a camera that "does it all well" that renting "the best tool for the job" is viable in the US (renting is cheap). Cheers!
  20. Interesting that: "The image is separated into 4 quadrants, each recorded onto a separate SDHC" That is one way to do 4k .

  22. Just a heads up  FenchelJanisch2  is famous for posting fake videos. I doubt that was taken with the D4.  Can anyone confirm that he has one? doubtful ...

    Fuji X-Pro 1

Loved shooting Astia film with my old Nikon F100 - fantastic for skin tones. Does fuji mention anywhere if the film modes can be used for video? Found some sample images on the fuji site: http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/x/fujifilm_x_pro1/sample_images/ Even an iso 1600 shot in there. They are loading slow atm - servers getting hit hard.  Obviously they didn't retouch these - tons of dust and dirt on the sensor but the image quality looks good.  Very foveonish imo. Nice.

    Fuji X-Pro 1

I have no idea about video specs (apart from what dpreview posted) so if anyone finds anything - please post. Thanks! http://fujifilm-x.com/x-pro1/en/about/concept/index.html
  25. I like it.  Price will have to go under $500 for me to buy one. Will be difficult to swallow such a slow lens at the long end however...barf. If video quality is strong it might be a fun camera.
