A bit of Christmas fun - mini shootout and name the camera!
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Andy - 1/5 ??? IsleOfRed - 2/5 :P Thank you and please try again ;D -
You might remember last week Philip Bloom posted shots from the C300, F3, GH2, 5D Mark II and 4 other cameras as a prelude to the test he is doing and that is the inspiration for this bit of Christmas fun. Here I’ve put 5 cameras up against each other for how well they resolve detail and the clarity of their video output. The results may surprise you. And not only am I challenging the cameras I’m challenging you to figure out which is which! Good luck!! EOSHD releases hacked GH2 patches and film modes
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Confirm ;D -
Not used the 40mm yet, but it is probably a lot more money. The 38mm is great, nice character... pretty unique. Will have some footage from that and the NEX 5N up over Christmas.

I use the GH2 mostly, 5D Mk II I am getting back into. The 60D is a bit of a non-entity for me because it is third best. The GH2 doesn't cost any more either. It has better image quality all round, more adaptable to different lenses, and feels better to use. The 5D Mark II is better as a stills camera and for close-up wide angle shots of actors, shallow depth of field at wide angle and I feel colour is better on it than the GH2. But there really is no place for the 60D in my mind!

This is really simple... Simply cut and paste the URL to your Vimeo or YouTube clip, for example...
http://vimeo.com/31835141
And it will be magically turned into an embedded video clip Darkness Seeker

GH2 noise levels are killing me. Could it be defective?
Andrew Reid replied to lunelson's topic in Cameras
The Tokina sound interesting Ed does it work on full frame 5D Mark II as well? -
Check out the 20-40mm push zoom Pentax 110 lens for the NEX, it covers the full sensor and is tiny for a zoom... It even features a constant F2.8 aperture. Review soon on EOSHD

EOSHD tests the new Magic Lantern Unified on 5D Mark II
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I think the Mark IV and 7D have dual DIGIC 4 so different architecture internally to the 60D, 600D, 5D Mark II and 550D. Don't think it will happen soon for those cameras buy stay tuned to the ML site and follow Alex on Twitter for news. -

Which 176Mbit hack are you using? Mine is 150Mbit. -

Shootout in the snow - Sony A65 vs Panasonic GH2 vs Canon 600D
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The GH2 does the crop on the sensor. It has a wider sensor to accommodate 16:9, with a 1.86x crop. You're asking what it compares to... It compares to Canon APS-C 1.6x quite closely, and the A65 compares to the GH2 quite closely since it has an extra crop over APS-C 1.5x to accommodate the image stabilisation. -
Shootout in the snow - Sony A65 vs Panasonic GH2 vs Canon 600D
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The Sony you mean ;D 24Mbit is ok if the codec is advanced (b-frames, etc.) the main issue on the Sony is the scaling of the full sensor down to 1080p. Remember an un-hacked Canon 600D has 36Mbit at its disposal and the 5D Mark II has 45Mbit+ -

Certainly when you project the footage on a big screen and sit back, it looks detailed enough yet organic. Quite unlike on an LCD monitor. The worst thing you can have is an image that isn’t organic but over-sharpened with the bright high contrast jagged lines around every single detail – it’s extremely tiring on the eyes and very DV. EOSHD releases hacked GH2 patches and film modes
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Hi Marcelo. You have to change the settings in PTools, the hack application. A small description of each hack option appears there. My book has a more comprehensive guide to it. Then when you select your preferences, you have to apply the firmware update again which takes around 2 minutes. You can't change much in the menus... Only what Panasonic provides really... Although you can switch between PAL / NTSC for 1080i and 720p modes, and switch between 24H and 24L modes.... 24L can be a fallback with a lower bitrate setting... But the bitrates themselves are all set up in PTools. -
They're ok but if you have a very wide lens or the Canon 10-22mm, it won't work.

GH2 noise levels are killing me. Could it be defective?
Andrew Reid replied to lunelson's topic in Cameras
The answer sir is a faster lens. The 14-140mm is just too slow for low light. Also installing the hack helps because it gives noise a finer film-like grain. I recommend a lens of F2 or faster, then your problem will have all but gone unless you shoot at ISO 3200 and under expose. Try over exposing just slightly... often ISO 1600 can look cleaner over exposed than a dark and dim underexposure at lower ISOs like 640. CMOS sensors have a signal to noise ratio and on the GH2 it helps to boost the signal to hide the background noise of the sensor. -

Enabling video on cameras that didn’t have a video mode is a miracle in itself! (50D). Putting all the settings into a menu system on the camera rather than in a Windows app like PTools with the GH2 hack – also pretty good. As well as higher bitrate recording, ML has evolved to give us ISO 12,800 recording, peaking, crop marks, false colour, zebras and now even variable frame rates. Shootout in the snow - Sony A65 vs Panasonic GH2 vs Canon 600D
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yes I am aware of the SLT mirror and the slight light loss - but in a practical real world sense they are still 99% the same for image quality in video mode. For those who are concerned about the SLT mirror get a faster lens or adjust your exposure slightly. There really isn't much difference in low light performance between the NEX 7 and A65 in video mode. -
http://www.vimeo.com/33927560 Note: the Sony A65 shares the same sensor, image processor and viewfinder as the NEX 7 and Sony A77. Image quality is 99% the same on all 3 models. As part of my series of reviews on the Sony A65 I shot this comparison yesterday near Manchester, city of Oasis and Frank Sidebottom. The A65 represents the latest generation of Sony’s technology – 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor, ExmorHD image processor with 1080/60p and a 2.4MP OLED TruFinder. So is it any good? EOSHD releases hacked GH2 patches and film modes
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
GOP settings are region independent, no link. Only frame rate is region dependant and my patches are for the 24p mode which is same on all cameras (PAL, NTSC). Yes 1.0 firmware, Vitaliy has not yet hacked the new Panasonic 1.1 firmware with 25p.
