1.
When this lens comes out it would be great to see a comparison between it and the Nokton 25mm. Jim
Chalk and cheese mate. The Nokton is not a full frame 24mm wide angle. It is a characterful and beautifully built super fast F0.95 portrait lens for the GH2. The Samyang is a crisp, sharp (hopefully) fast wide angle for full frame, suited to low light landscapes and run & gun.
 2.
Pentax have just unveiled a mirrorless version of their K5 called the K-01. The video on a K5 was pretty much an afterthought, it will be interesting to see what they have done with this new mirrorless version. http://www.pentaxforums.com/news/pentax-k-01-officially-announced.html Chris
I want it to be good. But it looks like a Lego Brick and has no unique technology in it. Sony, Canon and Panasonic develop their own sensors, Canon and Sony develop their own EVFs. Pentax don't even have an EVF on the Lego Brick and their sensor is from Sony. Ground breaking? Doesn't look like it but I will be over the moon to proved wrong....
 3.
I really like the image of this camera. The tone gradation is lovely. Hey Andrew, would you say this camera looks "more professional" to show up in a paid gig than, say, the GH2? I know this can be a dumb question, but unfortunately, showing up in a paid gig, looks matter too... at least for some clients. How would you compare this camera's "pro look" to a Canon 7D? Really wanna know your opinion. Love your site. Please keep it up!
Hey my Borat bro. If you turn up to a pro gig in a mankini, it won't look good no matter what. I think the camera if it is anything less diminutive than a FS100, C300 or AF100 benefits from an external monitor, cage, and rig. Then the client will think it looks pro. The client of course should be more bothered about what kind of video they get at the end of it.
 4.
http://www.vimeo.com/36117747 Thanks mainly to the unexpected success of their NEX line of consumer mirrorless cameras, Sony are probably the only company to realise the truth about mirrorless and its future direction. Namely that it is the future, especially for video. 5.
Consumer 4K is on the way, it is now as inevitable as the first 1080p stickers were on your TVs and cameras of 5 years ago. In an interview with DPReview, Nikon’s Tetsuya Yamamoto says that the Nikon J1′s (Aptina produced) sensor is already capable of a 4K horizontal resolution in video mode (although he doesn’t reveal the vertical resolution which I suspect would be lower than 2K). 6.
There's so many camera angles to look at in the "WHY" video including many wide shots. There's cars, kayak, road signs, metal watches, many fabrics, hairs etc.. I can't see any aliasing or moire. A lot of shots in this video would have looked terrible on 5D and they look incredible here.
Said it before, will say it again. WHY was SOFT! Incredibly so. Just take a wide frame grab from WHY and compare it to something you've shot at wide angle on the GH2. Massive difference.
 7. They can't update the C300. The sensor isn't capable of 4K. Yes it is a 4K sensor but the pixels resolve colour (red, blue, green) and when combined without interpolation produce perfect 1080p. It is designed for that, and not 4K. No firmware / codec issue can turn it into a 4K video feed.
 8. The analogy is very poor because word processing and binding techniques add nothing to writing. Gear is part of the language of cinema. The lens, the camera, 8mm - for example - is a shooting style. Each has its own feel, its own soul, its own poetry to add to the story. I really do get tired of hearing that it is all about the content, it plainly isn't.  :-X
 9. You are defiantly missing shallow DOF and low light performance at anything other than wide angle. The 20mm will be a good buy, but there are other alternatives. 25mm F1.4 c-mounts 35mm F2 Canon FD 35mm F1.4 Samyang 25mm Lumix Leica F1.4 Voigltander Nokton 25mm F1.4 Lots of others... Search between 25mm and 35mm on eBay with aperture better than or equal to F2. The 20mm pancake is very good, but quite clinical - not as characterful in the bokeh department as others.
 10. Yep. You need a copy of the 1.0 firmware, and to load that onto the GH2 the normal way. Then apply the PTools hack and load the firmware. I tried it, works fine.
 11. It shows an intent. Hopefully, the execution of it will be sooner rather than later!
 12. Very interesting, thank you for bringing this here... Did you find anything else filed by Canon, published on the 26th January?
 13.
Canon are developing their own RAW codec for 2K and 4K video. In a patent filed in July 2010 and published yesterday, Canon describe a codec which stores raw sensor data from a 12bit high resolution RGB sensor with Bayer colour filter array. 14. Didn't Sony collaborate with Zeiss, not Leica? Panasonic collaborate with Leica. Make a good enough product and you will be taken seriously, who gives a shit if the Japanese industry doesn't take you seriously? If a new Japanese company entered the photographic market and outsold Canon, wouldn't they be taken seriously? Sony bought Minolta because they needed the expertise.
 15.
Is there a chance that the aliasing/moire/pixel downscaling problems could be fixed by firmware updates?
Very unlikely because it is more likely to be a sensor / hardware issue, and the firmware fix would have to be very low level and fundamental change. Even if Canon could fix it this way, they wouldn't. They'd have it better out of the box in the first place if it was just a small programming change.
 16.
Why doesn't that apply to Panasonic?
Because they make their own sensors. What is being implied is that Nikon need Sony to produce their CMOS sensors, and Sony won't allow them competitive video. Not a view I share, but cannot be discounted completely.
 17.
doesent looks so bad to me.... http://youtu.be/ijXE32V8HEE
Looks terrible. Aliasing all over the place. Soft detail. It is nowhere near the GH2 level, it looks like a full frame D7000. How sad.
 18. Original footage kindly posted by Sara here http://www.eoshd.com/comments/index.php/topic,210.0.html
 19.
I think it is a mixture of patent agreement and Japanese protectionism. Downscaling is effectively crippling therefore the quality is going to be poor. Appears Nikon D4 was allowed clean HDMI because the video is going to be crippled or downscaled and will not compete against the true high end video cameras.
Why would Nikon cripple it? They don't HAVE any high end video cameras!!
 20.
You pre-ordered a $6000 DSLR primarily for video when there is the Sony FS100 for $4700 (B&H)? Why? This is not a cynical question. I really wanna know.
I prefer DSLRs because the form factor is smaller, better to handle than the FS100, less complicated, less intrusive for kind of shooting I do (especially, say, in a temple in Asia). Also the D4 is full frame and will be extraordinary in low light. Also the FS100 doesn't do stills. Alas it looks like it is not to be. Next great hope for 2012 is 1DX and 5D3.
 21.
Nikon are taking pre-orders for the D4. But based on the sample videos so far, if you are interested in using one for video I’d hold off. It puzzle me why Nikon would want to put out such poor quality files for prospective D4 owners. I can’t imagine Nikon taking a bunch of  640×480 JPEGs and claiming these are representative of the amazing output of their new DSLR so why do it with video? 22. The Leica 25mm. The zoom has a overall far worse feel in terms of image quality, because it is poor in low light and less capable of depth of field. The varying focal length gives you a lack of 'visual focus' when out on a shoot, you end up concentrating more on the shots with the prime.
