There's one more BIG 'ugly' if you happen to live on a certain continent called Europe and do anything that might be broadcast - no 25P in 4k, only in 1080P. Unless they change their specs or update it in firmware. It's not even an oversight, it's a complete lack of understanding or who would buy and use this camea. Sony have my money for the forseable future.
I think the press release is worded for the American market. This can't be true about 25p. Canon have always released world-cams which are PAL / NTSC.
It should at least be fixable, just one more frame a second, but really, a european press release to film makers for a 4k camera that can't be used by them - is beyond ridiculous.
Confirmed, it is 25p only in 1080p. You're right and I think ridiculous does describe it pretty well.
 2. Have updated the article. Price is indeed a whopping $15,000 like C300. And for Europe, Russian and Asia - three quarters of the world - 25p is only in 1080p not 4k! Insane!
Have you ever known a company more cynical?  The 1D C is basically another $8k for a firmware upgrade and a headphone jack on top of the $7k 1D X.
And a heat pipe around the sensor to cool it down in continuous shooting mode!
 5.
Canon have announced the $10,000 $15,000 Cinema 1D. As previously leaked on EOSHD, this DSLR has 4K recording ability, S35mm crop mode, 1080/60p, log profile and uncompressed HDMI output. 6.
The Sony NXCAM NEX FS100 is the first ever video camera which is competitive with DSLRs on both price and image quality. Yes it took this long! Now down to $4000 used (£2600) in the US, it is an alternative (for video) to the 5D Mark III at $3500 or £2999. 7.
They can charge whatever they want, there is no competition at all. Full frame is not the same as super 35 or Micro 4/3rds you can't compare products. Saying they need to price against Sony is like saying the 1dx has to compete with the 7d price wise. The Panasonic and Sony cameras get absolutely slaughtered in low light and I have little doubt this camera will continue the trend.
This isn't quite correct. Competition - Sony have announced they are going to be pushing 4K to rehabilitate their flagging TV business. They are going to put 4K in consumer devices like their full frame SLT camera. It may still not be a product aimed at cinematographers but it is certainly competitive. Panasonic and Sony in low light? The FS100 is better than the 5D Mark III's video mode in low light. Panasonic have yet to show their hand with a recent generation large sensor video camera but the GH2 does very well in low light for the price. Then there is Nikon - showing a VERY keen interest in DSLR video at the moment, and rounding up a bunch of influential pros to seek advice for improvements on future DSLRs.
 8.
It slays me to read posts where people think that a camera should cost $x and not $y. So funny! Canon are in business, yes business, to make money, not to give you free tools! And, if youʻre on this forum, donʻt you already have a GH2? If you have a GH2, whatʻs keeping you from making films/making money? ROTFLMAO!
Of course it is a business. And a business is about giving people what they want. If Canon continue to ignore video on the consumer, prosumer and low end of the pro market because they are focussing on the $10,000+ stuff, they are going lose a chunk of market share worth billions of dollars. 5D Mark III video users have spoken - that cam just isn't good enough, and there's no solution in sight.
 9.
Despite my not being able to own it at 10k, it is a pretty remarkable thing to be able to shoot 4K on a full frame sensor in a Canon workflow, especially if it writes to CF cards. The Scarlet is an exceptional creature but its 4K raw workflow with proprietary (and very expensive) media excludes it from rental consideration for me. A 4k cinema 1d becomes a very appealing rental option as an A-cam with this feature set, especially the log-profile.
Totally agree. It is very appealing to me as well. The arguments about the low end are also valid. Everyone here is equally valid to be happy / unhappy in their own ways. I just wish Canon would give us a proper interchangeable lens video camera or video DSLR for $3000. It doesn't have to be 4K or even full frame. Just progressive. We haven't really moved on in all these years at the low end.
 10.
I think that people had some rather unrealistic expectations for this launch. Canon's flagship DSLR, the EOS-1D X(with HD rather than 4K video) is set around $6,800 body only. To think that they would cannibalize its sales with a 4K camera at lower price point before the 1D X has even been made widely available seems a little odd.
I wasn't expecting the 4K EOS to be much less than $10,000 to be honest. But if it was 1D X priced there is no way on earth it would cannibalise 1D X sales. That is sold to stills guys and press pack. So what if it did cannibalise it anyway? If you don't cannibalise yourself, someone else will. Does Canon care if you buy a $7K EOS 4K or EOS 1D X? No. As long as you don't buy a Sony.
 11.
someone release something revolutionary in the $2,000-$3,000 range please.  if all of NAB's big announcements just end up being $10,000+ cameras that require $5,000+ external recorders to reach their full potential.. well hell, none of that is very revolutionary, because by then you're up to the price of a scarlet and that revolution has already happened.
I too am more interested in accessible 'Apple market' cameras rather than 'IBM mainframe' $10,000 crap.
 12.
The "Cinema 1D"? ..so where is the Cinema 5D?
It isn't the forum ***URL not allowed*** is it? :) It isn't the Mark III It could only be the camera of our dreams circa $3000 in 2 years.
 13.
Canon are due to issue a press release ahead of NAB. What my source says about the new cameras is pretty extraordinary even in light of what Sony are doing with the FS700. Read full article
14. Good to see the GH2 in there. I'd have put the 5D in there instead of the 7D though. If the test is about aesthetics, then a full frame sensor adds a lot.
 15.
Apple released RAW Compatibility Update 3.12 last week. I downloaded a CR2 made with a 5D3, tested it and it works fine in Preview, iPhoto and Aperture. I suppose Canon wants to make sure that new users get the best viewing experience, while still keeping the silence as long as possible.
Yes but you need iPhoto and Aperture which are paid apps. This version of Lightroom is free.
 16.
Andew, or any of fellow members who has this setup, could you compare 5dmk3 to GH2, do a test?
I will be doing soon, along with FS100 in the mix.

 18.
It is a pretty disgraceful state of affairs around raw support and new camera releases at the moment and heads need banging together in my opinion. However help is at hand from Adobe who have released the pre-release version of the new Lightroom 4.1 – and it is free. Adobe Lightroom 4.1 Release Candidate (RC) can be downloaded at Adobe Labs here Read full article
19. Why bother with the 7D any more? Far better alternatives out there at the same price like the GH2, NEX 7 and 5D Mark II now it is dropping in price.
 20. It is possible the electronic contacts to the OLPF trigger a stronger anti-aliasing blur when video mode is active. More likely, video is more effected because you are viewing the results at 1:1 on a 1080p screen. If you look at stills they are quite soft at 1:1 as well.
 21. Yep, there was a patent filed. And now you see the results  :P
 22.

Wait till somebody figures out they can do this for money.
$450 USD + shipping (includes optical replacement glass): http://maxmax.com/IRCameraConversions.htm
A service like that could be a solution for many people here. It is worth the price if they can do the 5D Mark III, and do it right. I'd enquire and explain the situation with a link back to this article.
 23. Sorry for any confusion. By better I mean better specified. That paragraph is all in the context of specs, since the whole article is about the specs of the new camera. It goes without saying I am aware (as most of my readers are) that cameras have different strengths and weaknesses depending on the job. All of them. You wouldn't use a GoPro to shoot a narrative sequence, or an Alexa as a helmet camera for instance. The FS700 is a much better specified camera and more attractive than the C300 because it is 4K capable, does 240fps at 1080p and is cheaper. I agree that the ergonomics on the C300 are better, but in my opinion Sony's offerings are braver and more compelling, for less money. Hard to argue with that! Subjectivity is one thing, the facts quite another. It is also a fact that the 5D Mark III has competition from Nikon. I hope Canon show a lower cost C100 or 4K DSLR at NAB as it is sorely needed by lower budget filmmakers.
 24. Try formatting the card (low level format) and try again with the 24p mode.
 25. I'm using a SDHC 95Mbps and get 66-88Mbit footage in ALL-I mode. What are you using to analyse and playback the footage? It must surely have a problem with ALL-I because there is no WAY the highly compressed IPB has better image quality from my experience.
