No problem. Like your music by the way :)

That isn't true at all. Base ISO is always 200 on DSLR sensors. You will not get the best dynamic range at ISO 3200. Also the tunnel shot which Matt took a pic of from a Sony TV at a show - none of you shot with the A7S on that day so none of you have any idea what the real light levels were under the tunnel. Zero proof of the dynamic range abilities of the camera at all!

For video in 2014 Canon's answer is their existing fleet of DSLRs like the 60D and 5D Mark III and judging by the number of people still shooting with them, do they really need a 'video orientated 7D at Photokina'? I'd say not. I saw a 60D shooter on the streets a few days ago, big expensive rig, shitty 60D. I almost took him aside and had words :) But to be honest the competitors are as much to blame... all of them have dropped the ball in some way. Panasonic with their smaller sensors, Blackmagic with their delays and bugs, Sony with their quirks, and so on... If you want a Super 35mm camera for cheap... the only thing that is better than the 60D but with the same kind of features is the D5300. Pretty sad state of affairs really!

I am sometimes dissatisfied with pretty much all the cameras on the market. The Canon DSLRs lack video features and outside of Magic Lantern, don't exactly excite me for image quality, 1D C aside. Blackmagic I feel have let us down as much as they have tried to revolutionise the market. Nikon are hardcore photography traditionalists and don't 'get' video. They had a stab with the D800. Since then, they've gone backwards. Panasonic are great but the lack of full frame sensor is not. Olympus have a gem in terms of the 5 axis stabilisation but can't even be arsed to add 24p. Fuji are clueless for video... truly the worst of all, yet great on the stills side. Frustrating, as I need both. Sony push the technology to the absolute limits and often for very aggressive prices as well but there's always something which spoils it. Be it the potential rolling shutter disaster on the A7S and lack of internal 4K codec or the terrible ergonomics / lack of ND on the FS100... Every Sony camera I have used I have ended up selling, A7R being the next in a long line of discarded models, while the same cannot be said for my Canon stuff. Canon's strengths is in the colour science and lenses. I just wish they would push the price / performance barrier far more and surprise us occasionally with some in ya face innovation!!

What is Mac OSX Quick look doing to 14bit Nikon raw files?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Are you sure Quick Look is using the embedded preview? I thought this was an extremely low res thumbnail. Detail level is actually very nice on 27" iMac screen with Quick Look. -
Banding alert! This is when you hit space bar to preview a NEF raw file from the D600, you get a low-res / low quality quick preview of the file. I'm not bothered by it (it is expected behaviour) but I find it interesting on a technical level. What causes the banding? For reference here is how Adobe Camera Raw handles the same 14bit raw file when it is opened in Photoshop CC.

I am sure the A7S II will have built in 4K and give us all a reason to rush out to the shops again. My A7R is soon to go on eBay... A bit of a pointless purchase in light of the A7S... And sometimes I begin to wonder if the pointless purchases will ever end!

Don't forget the ready to shoot 4K pricing... A7S = $4500 GH4 = $1699

Keep the sample clips coming guys. Good stuff. Still awaiting my Atomos demo units but good to see the tests others have done.

All the high ISO footage from the Sony A7S so far have been highly compressed and streamed on YouTube. Here we have not one but two stages of very aggressive noise reduction being applied to the images. If you want to see it without the heavy compression removing all trace of noise, here's a full resolution JPEG shot at ISO 12,800 from the camera courtesy of DCFever... You can download it below... A new (and extraordinary) Sony A7S 4K low light test
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Not in raw it isn't! -
Indeed... hardware scaler on the HDMI. No pixel binning. Full 4K sensor readout. 10bit 422 uncompressed oversampled 1080p on the HDMI output = very nice picture :)

4K for $899 with the Panasonic FZ1000 - but beware the quirks!
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The smaller the camera the easier it is to put an ND filter in the narrowest part of the optical path. X100, RX100, Ricoh GR have tiny lenses. FZ1000 doesn't. Also don't forget the RX10 is $500 more than the FZ1000 for that built in ND filter, and you lose 4K, gain moire. I think it's fantastic value for what you DO get! No need to be angry at a few minor omissions... -
A good point all round really. Canon will have to respond eventually for exactly that reason... Why not do it NOW and sell some extra cameras? Canon are disappointing their customers at the moment with the lack of change.

Lens compatibility for Sony A7s or full-frame in general
Andrew Reid replied to miketurner's topic in Cameras
Anything for a film camera / SLR or full frame DSLR will fit. Anything for an APS-C camera will not cover, though the Sigma 18-35mm at the 35mm end and the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 at 16mm do actually cover, but the corners go mental! Seems like you would benefit from a copy of this Mike. http://www.eoshd.com/eoshd-shooters-guide-sony-a7-a7r-lenses Welcome to the forum :) -
It is like being at a party and the atmosphere is great, but then someone rude enters the room and hurls abuse at the host and several guests.... what do you reasonably do so not to cause too much of a scene? :) Fire them into the sun... That's what.

4K for $899 with the Panasonic FZ1000 - but beware the quirks!
Andrew Reid posted a topic in Cameras
View the FZ1000 at B&H or at Adorama The Panasonic FZ1000 looks like a very handy alternative to the Sony AX100 camcorder and RX10 bridge camera. It's also the world's first 4K camera (25p,30p) under $1k. At this price some compromises are bound to come into play and we'll get to those in a moment. First let's take in the rather lovely view... A 25-400mm Leica lens, 100Mbit/s codec for 4K, 120fps 1080p slow-mo and CineLikeD/V profiles just like the GH4. Read the full article here
