  1. For those who find video very lacking on small cameras especially the Fuji X100S and X100T, Panasonic now have a high end retro-styled compact with 4K video. The sensor and EVF come from the GX7, which in turn is quite close to the GH4 in performance terms. We are talking a gigantic sensor here for a compact, larger even than the 1" sensor of the Sony RX100 M3. As well as a large sensor, the camera packs a large aperture Leica 24-75mm which opens to an impressive F1.7 at the wide end. This adds a premium zoom lens to your small-camera-large-sensor arsenal whereas the X100T only has a fixed focal length prime. Read the full article here
  2. 4K Photo Mode shoots good video, but improvements will come in the future I believe
  3. What informs the film look? Of all the technical aspects that do, I think it comes down to three key ingredients. 24p, a wide dynamic range and a 2x anamorphic lens. I and many other filmmakers chase that look. Well, I've just returned from Photokina in Cologne, Germany with a surprise. 2 years on from my first visit to SLR Magic at Photokina in 2012, they are back with a 2x anamorphic lens in 2014. This lens has the potential to revolutionise the consumer market for cinema-standard anamorphic. Read the full article here
  4. Almost all new releases go to the top the moment they are put on sale.   Let's see how it is doing in a year.   That chart by the way is only DSLRs, no mirrorless in the mix like the A7 series, what DSLR were you expecting to see up there with the Canon and Nikons? A Pentax!?
  5. From the FD Times piece:   These greatest of all films, in their epic 65mm format, demanded epic logistical effort, 70+ pound temperamental cameras whose movements sometimes required oiling after every take, and set- ups that were not, shall we say, swift. Film, processing and dailies could average around $2500 for a 10-minute roll.
  6.   Beg to differ on that one :) Have you seen the price of iMax film?
  7.   It's not about shallow DOF, it's the whole rendering which changes especially with wide angle shots.
  8.   With three standard Alexa sensors stitched seamlessly together, 65mm film moves into the digital era and with it Arri into the 4K & 6K market. Read the full article here
  9.   Because the A7S takes my Canon lenses, has 4K output, has a better form factor for video, better codec and better image with S-LOG.
  10.   There seems to be no CineLikeD on it, but it is not the final firmware
  11. Shot 4K with the LX100 yesterday, going to upload and write my review as soon as I have access to a 1st world internet connection ;)
  12.   Definitely support is coming, but key thing is when. Camera is next month. If you can't edit the footage, then that's a bit of a problem isn't it!?   XAVC = H.264. What do you mean by hardware support? On the edit side?
  13.   Sensible suggestions, I'm going to act on them when I get back from Photokina. Cheers.
  14.   No. Samsung need to work more closely with Adobe and Apple to get support and quick. Very important we can edit the native files directly. I don't like transcoding especially when it turns a 910MB efficient file into a 26GB behemoth!
  15.   Yes e-shutter is in there. I saw a switch to enable it in the menus.
  16.   For some of this stuff you can just check the specs sheet, let's keep the questions relatively interesting :)
  17. No 10bit, at least not on the pre-prod firmware. Good question about the battery, will ask.   Keep the questions coming...
  18. Of all the surprises recently and there have been a few, the NX1 is the biggest. I spoke to Samsung's Sung Lae Park at Photokina whilst trying out the pre-production camera. Read the full article here
  19. Much more sensible pricing from Leica here.
  20. Day one at Photokina and first on the agenda is a catch-up chat with Sony product managers Bill Drummond, Ben Pilling and Robbie Fleming who had arrived fresh from IBC. I took a tour of the Sony booth and briefly tried the new Sony FS7 Super 35mm cinema camera for filmmakers! Read the full article here
  21. Wait for the LX100 is my advice. RX100 III is a bit cheaper and still nice but the LX100 just pushes everything to a new level especially video.
  22. The Panasonic LX100 is an engineering marvel. Along with the Apple Watch this has been the most impressive feat of miniaturisation of 2014 so far. To take both of these products travelling would be extremely liberating relative to taking a clunky DSLR and a standard smartphone. If the application of the technology is impressive, wait to you see what is being applied. The specs are outstanding for a camera of this kind, with the large Micro Four Thirds sensor of the GH4 sitting behind a Leica 24-75mm F1.7-2.8 lens, with 4K video, 11fps continuous shooting, and the same 4 core image processor as the GH4. 23. I prefer stills on the A7S as well but AF is important for stills and there are more lenses with AF on the GH4 / Micro Four Thirds system, so it's horses for courses really. The A7S is full frame and I love that look for stills.
  24. Say something useful for once in your life, and avoid insulting the person who has his finger hovering over the 'ban' button.   That's my sensible advice to you at this moment in time; no white powder involved. Adios!
