  1. Comment on the New York Times piece says it best: "Reading this comment board makes me sad for America. We used to hail our successes and revere exceptionally productive people. Anyone who has driven a Tesla knows it is a marvel of modern American engineering. Just putting that car on the road is a stunning accomplishment. But Elon Musk also has a thriving rocket company, is building the world’s largest battery factory, was a founder of PayPal and has dozens of other accomplishments to his name. In today’s America, that’s a reason to be ridiculed and despised. The Internet has destroyed this great land — giving every citizen a forum to anonymously expel their most venomous bile. I wouldn’t blame Musk for selling out to the Saudis. They wouldn’t put him through the insufferably inane garbage that gets flung at him in this country."

    Elon Musk

Required reading! https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/16/business/elon-musk-interview-tesla.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=first-column-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news https://www.thecut.com/2018/08/azealia-bankss-feud-elon-musk-grimes-explained.html So Tesla has some unnecessary side-battles to fight now, which I am sure the oil and established auto industry will use against their biggest rival. It's important for the whole damn planet that Elon Musk achieves his goals at Tesla and at SpaceX. Vital for humanity. People simply cannot get their heads around this. They are constantly gossiping and looking for ways to bring him down. Sure he's overworked. Yes, on sleeping pills. Maybe he even has a girlfriend (musician Grimes) who may not be the most stable presence (personally, I like her!). Yes, he may well have been on acid when he made the tweet about securing funding to take the company private at $420 a share. Who cares. People need to look past all this gossip, even the possible breach of the law, and give the guy a break. Imagine our city streets with no pollution and breathable air. Imagine a home on another planet, ready to continue humanity after we fuck up this one. Every investor in Tesla should let Musk concentrate on his health away from the extra pressure of lawsuits.
  3. It's not going to be a Pocket camera once it's rigged up with a battery. I do wish Blackmagic could work on their power economy issues. However such great codecs and raw have a cost. I'd rather have 40 minutes of battery and some spares, rather than no option at all for ProRes and raw on a new, exciting camera to compete with the establishment.
  4. Yeah, I am not surprised with $1000 price tags. There are far more than three. Toshiba, although now under Sony's ownership. TSMC, the third biggest contract chip maker in the world. http://www.tsmc.com/english/dedicatedFoundry/technology/cmos.htm Panasonic have large sensor CMOS fabs. And furthermore, once you look beyond to the fabless chip designers, you have many many other sources who can design custom CMOS sensors, like the one in the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K. Samsung actually have a close relationship with Sony on image sensors and have put Sony CMOS sensors in their smartphones alongside their own.
  5. Of course you don't have that problem with EOSHD Pro LOG at ISO 200 (*hint hint*)
  6. With the number of Galaxy handset shipments stalling since 2013, Samsung has been looking to raise prices on their high-end handsets to offset the plateau. The company has suffered dramatic losses of market share in China to cheaper rivals as a result. Now there are rumours Samsung is looking 'beyond the galaxy'... Read the full article
  7. Glad it is working now guys, I will update the guide which comes with Pro Color to mention any FCPX issues and how to fix them.
  8. Disappointed they at least didn't put an articulated screen on it. The lens is already very nice as are the ergonomics so maybe they don't need to change it but after 4 years... You'd expect more creativity.
  9. How does he do VLOG material on a 1D X II with that MJPEG 4K codec? It would create an impossible workflow for the fast turn around his stuff needs, and massive amounts of material for archival. Or has he dropped his channel back to 1080p? He either doesn't care about 4K, or thinks AF is king... Either way, should have given the A7 III an audition, surely? Meanwhile in smartphone land, check this out https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45208546 Motorola is now owned by Chinese company Lenovo, who are one of the least innovative fuckers on planet earth. If China doesn't start respecting the US copyright law, they are going to be in deep shit. And not just because of tub-thumping or bullying by small-hands Trump - but because losing access to Android and Qualcomm parts will be on the cards.
  10. Okaaaay. Enough of this. You can take your overpriced lens somewhere else. Thread closed.
  11. It has pros and cons. Hard to say what's BEST overall. I have the P20 Pro / Samsung S9 / iPhone X and each has strengths in different areas, Review coming soon.
  12. Never underestimate the extended hand of friendship from PR companies and Canon. There's also some Samsung bias going on, with various iPhone X shots purposefully wobbly and the iPhone X is cracked for a start, which implies weakness subconsciously in the poster frame.
  13. One of the most common problems with S-LOG 3 is that it's very counter-intuitive to expose it! Harv Video/Audio Stuff on YouTube says he is getting far better results with far less noise in the shadows with his technique, shown in the video above. I highly recommend trying it yourself. 14. Note 9 looked better than whatever Canon shit he was using to film the intro. Is it just me or has he gone back to Canon from the Panasonic GH5 and Sony stuff? I've noticed a huge drop in VLOG image quality since the 6D Mk II came out and he reviewed it.
  15. Best way I can describe it are they are a logical favourite but not an emotional one. I don't really bond with it when using it.It's a utilitarian tool with top specs... it's not a friend, or a companion, in the way that some lesser cameras have been. Sony need to work on the X factor and look beyond the scientific.
  16. They are doing well partly due to a good product but partly due to zero competition. No full frame mirrorless Panasonic, no Olympus, no Fuji, no Canon, no Nikon. That is about to change.
  17. I would say AF is the same or very similar indeed between the two. A difference to consider far more than AF is price and resolution. How much extra would you pay for the R? Do you need 42MP? Are you ok with occasional moire in full frame 4K? If you ask me it's a bad time to buy either. There is the A7S III due next month.
  18. Pro LOG is being updated for the A7 III. It will come out soon! With poorly lit rooms, energy saving lighting is bad for the yellow-green cast. Orange / warm tone is dealt better with Pro Color. You'll see best results in houses that use incandescent and halogen lighting, and an improvement with the standard LEDS... but no matter what camera or colour profile you use, lighting is SUCH a big factor, bigger than the camera can overcome by itself. Why not get some lights in addition to Pro Color?
  19. Pro Color doesn't use SLOG. It uses S-Gamut. That's a colour mode, not a gamma curve. Confusing I know! There's a guide that comes with it and that explains what everything does.
  20. This shouldn't be happening in FCPX, with Show HDR as Raw Values selected. I am going to look into what is going on. Maybe Apple have done an update, and there is now another setting which needs changing... Stay tuned! In the meantime, a quick fix is that this will ONLY happen with the HDR V4. If you try the other V4 profiles, they doesn't use Hybrid LOG Gamma so it won't be an issue. And it is fine in other NLEs like Resolve. You might try transcoding to ProRes as well. That will remove the HDR metadata... Or possibly try deleting or moving the XML files in the XAVC-S folder?
  21. It benefits a lot from it, but it doesn't turn into an A7R III. The colour processing engine and sensor on that camera is older. You can adjust all the settings needed for Pro Color though, apart from S-Gamut3.Cine. It uses the original S-Gamut. And auto-WB is a bit of a weakness on the old A7S. So I recommend using manual.
  22. The lens isn't worth $40,000 I can tell you that much.
