  2. ^ I do the same thing. We write the filename in the script notes so we know what it contains. And when I copy footage off cards, I rename all the files so that corresponding files always have the same name.
  3. He's been on Noam Kroll's podcast as well and he mentioned an ingenious thing he does when he slates a shot. He basically claps and then instead of calling it Take One, take two, etc... he uses the file name on his zoom recorder in place of scene/take name/numbers... if that makes sense

Yeah, unfortunately it's the collective "we" and those of us who think there might be an optimum resolution and sharpness are hopelessly outnumbered by the MOAR! MOAR!! MOARRR!!!! people who are completely divorced from reality and can never get enough.
  5. Thanks for turning me on to this guy. I just listened to a great podcast with him and his crew on NFS. He embodies a filmmaking philosophy that I definitely strive for.

Whoa. This is pretty terrible 😕 Thanks for sharing this.
  7. Interesting footage. a pity there was not enough budget for HIRES cgi. The entire background is completely blurred and without detail 😂🤣
  8. It's usually to free up capital tied up in the stock, generate cash to run the company and pay to manufacture new stock of something that is selling better with higher profit margins. Also retailers may get sales volume-based discounts or bonuses from suppliers which are extra income to them.
  9. Have a good story to tell that holds the viewers attention. Everything else is secondary, as without that they won't be watching the content for very long anyway.
  10. The BMPCC was already soooo cheap for its time that the fire sale made it an absolute no-brainer 🙂
  11. That was Paul Cook - https://vimeo.com/paulcook and https://www.paulcookfilm.com/

Lens wise, I think what is needed to pair with the S9 is a collapsible kit zoom like the APS-C Nikon Z 16-50mm f3.5-6.3 but FF so maybe a 24-70mm f4-7.1 ? But as MrSMW said, at the moment a Sigma APS-C 18-50 f2.8 makes a lot of sense for video use as 4k50/60p is APS-C cropped anyway.
  13. I still think a decade later there still hasn't been a sale as good as those US$500 BMPCC cameras! Also, thank you very much for making me feel ollllldddd by reminding me it was a DECADE ago! 😮 🤣 (as if it wasn't bad enough for me already right now, having a birthday tomorrow 🤯 )

Well, I'm not going overseas for film work. So I won't be bringing a full sound package, I'll be extremely limited in terms of what I can bring with me. (I'll still bring something, enough to do little short films on the weekends perhaps?)
  15. I've never asked for more megapixels. I was happy with 8-12MP. Glass is evil, the more you have, the more "corrections" there are, to the point of not having any dimensionality. It's very difficult to show dimensionality in only 2D.

But that's comparing current 'street' price of S5ii with launch price of S9 - here in the UK the S5ii was around £1999 at launch, £1649 now. I'd expect the S9 to follow the same sort of price curve, by the end of the year it'll probably be at least £200-£300 cheaper (depending on how good sales are). It's pretty obvious that it's designed to be as small and cheap as possible - no mechanical shutter, no headphone jack, no EVF, cold shoe only, minimal dials and buttons. That keeps the build cost down and helps the product cope with 'price erosion' over time. If they were making a more cutting-edge camera it might have a much faster stacked sensor to compensate for the lack of mechanical shutter - but then I suspect everyone would be saying it's nice but way too pricey...
  17. Oh yeah, definitely a good deal. If I were at all interested in the Black Magic ecosystem or weird form factor, I'd jump on it.
  18. The hipster youtube ladies and gentlemen! I think we found the main customer for the S9!! I'm not worthy. I don't have any tattoos, no funny hats, and I certainly don't know how to juggle my camera and phone at the same time. I haven't seen a video like that in a long time.

I believe it doesn't have overheating or recording time issues in 4k mode (except in high speed modes?)
  21. Or this model was selling better than the Pyxis but they want to push that camera as their next gen of cameras. Either way it's a good deal and equivalent to the famous OG BMPCC fire sale of 2014.
  22. The filmmaker that made the WW2 5Diii/ML Raw video. Yeah Pete Ohs is pretty interesting actually. His past 3 or 4 films he has made on his own after getting a "real" budget to make a movie and hating the process, so he took his 5D3, casted some actors and wrote a very loose script that they wrote/rewrote each morning before filming. He makes a movie a year. I believe he edits on a livestream and people watch and may make suggestions... or he did with Jethica.
  23. Love the look and size of the camera, but yeah, seems to be quite a few compromises up front. and that pancake makes me feel great about snagging an open box nikon z 26mm 2.8 for $325 this week.

Yes. I shoot all my longer form static stuff 4k 25p and all the handheld elements, ie, ‘clips’ 4k 50p so am in S35 mode for most of it really and for that, the S9 could work. I would not trade an S5ii for one, (ha no!) but as something small & discrete, I guess it would work, especially with either/both of those small zooms or any one of the 3 compact primes. And as a fan of; smaller, lighter, faster, it’s something I might have considered if I did not already have the S1H in the static role and the S5ii as that handheld option, but for me otherwise, nah. To be honest, I’m not even sure how any S1 line replacement would even be an option… What could an S2H do that my S1H cannot do? For my needs. Nothing I want or could think of. What would something new give me above what the S5ii gives me? Ditto, nada. The only real thing the S5ii lacks for me is a better shutter mech for stills and I wish it had a higher res rear screen, plus was a tilt and not a flip out, but for my video needs, ‘Peak Camera’. Not ‘PC’ if we’re talking pulling stills from video, but that is another topic and I am resigned right now and this late on my career to probably see that out with separate tools for stills and video. Which is why I fooked off to Nikon for stills where my needs are better served. But that is also another subject and not pertinent to this discussion!
