Canon 5D Mark II hack brings 66Mbit 1080p

    Andrew Reid (EOSHD)By Andrew Reid (EOSHD)December 2, 2010 News 2 Mins Read

The Magic Lantern 5D Mark II hack has been quiet for a while now but added some useful things like manual audio control.

A parameter which controls video bitrate has been unlocked and the latest 2.0.8 firmware is now hackable.

    [url]http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Bit_rate

The 5D Mark II currently records in a variable bit rate format of H.264 at 42Mbit (Mbps). Genius Trammell Hudson has it sustainable in 24p mode at 66Mbit, a big leap and much higher than the GH1’s maximum sustainable bitrate in AVCHD of 44Mbit. Above that, 76Mbit is flakey and only works for a few seconds, so 66Mbit seems to be where it’s at.

What is interesting is that Trammell is continuing to have more and more power over the 5D Mark II’s latest 2.0.8 firmware, and I expect some interesting developments. However don’t expect a fix for moire and aliasing – these are ‘low level’ aspects of the hardware, and would require significant code rewrites and hardware updates instead of just parameter tweakage.

Trammell is quietly working away at the latest patch, and testing various settings.

You can download the new high bitrate firmware here and assist Trammell with testing it.

Please note this is beta firmware, not final.

If you are feeling generous in this season of good-will you may also donate to his project, so he can continue to eat occasionally in-between coding!!
