Nikon 8K?

With newer generation sensors capable of more on-chip capabilities such as on-chip binning, on-chip oversampling and so on, the sheer power of processors is starting to become irrelevant.

And no, Sony design the sensors, Nikon and Apple buy them off-the-shelf, they do make minor customisations. Fujifilm swapped the standard Bayer mask to X-Trans and that's the biggest customisation Sony ever allowed.

If you buy a car and do a custom paint, can you say you designed the car?

That is not how contract manufacturing works. Sony have standard manufacturing processes, and the contracting entity has to make their designs with that in mind, but they do actually design the product. They can't include something the manufacturer can't readily make for example. It might seem at a superficial level that various sensors are similar, but that is primarily because the underlying manufacturing process by necessity has to be the same. Do not confuse that with design however.

That is why people think these parts are "off the shelf" when actually they are made to order.

I don't think they design and change half of what you think. Read the comments more than this article. About 1/4 the way down in the comments read the comments by a guy named ZM. He seems to know his stuff about this and he sort of sets the record straight. Sony does the heavy lifting on the sensor design, others just get to pick a few things they like over others. They are Far from designing the whole sensor. Maybe just get to modify the top layer a bit, and a few maybe special dates rates,  and that is about it. Plus Sony knows everything they are going to do in advance so they have a hell of a leg up on the competition. Sure they probably can't use that feature for a bit themselves but..
