  1. Yes, from my tests with EIS I think I’m only going to use it with longer lenses, FHD pixel pixel mode for extra reach and relatively static shots. It seems to work nicely in those situations. For all other static shots IBIS with IS boost works fantastically for me. I don’t move the camera a lot generally but for those panning, tilting and generally light movements simple IBIS without boost is best. Fortunately I never film while walking so I have no real need for a gimbal.
  2. Hey, thanks for your input. Yes, I’ve tried the EIS but the problem is it’s very difficult to do a more scientific test vs post stabilization so I was just wondering what the general consensus is here regarding the EIS vs post. Because I think generally most people advise against it from discussions I’ve read elsewhere. To me, EIS sometimes worked and sometimes I was getting that strange movement that you also get with post stab in DR when for example there’s something in the foreground with a blurred background. In such a case I would just not use stab in DR but the EIS would already be baked in the footage. But as I said, a more scientific test is a bit difficult.
  3. Yeap, shutter button fan here! As for stabilization on the S5 I'm very happy with IBIS when doing light camera movements and IS Boost when staying still. I'm not using any stabilized lenses, most are vintage manual lenses anyway. I'm not sure about the E-Stabilization though. Anyone used that? I think it mainly helps with longer lenses but even then, wouldn't a DR post stabilization better? Or maybe the E-Stab in camera does it better because it also uses gyro data?
  4. Yeah, the 6K photo mode is actually 5.2K 200Mbit/s H.265. It’s not bad at all but it’s 30fps. As I mainly shoot in 24fps, I like the slight slowing down of the 30fps on a 24fps timeline. I usually don’t need that much resolution but it’s nice it’s there. As for the Long GOP codecs on the S-Series, I’ve read that they’re much more robust than the older Long GOP of the GH cameras. For this reason for example Alex from emotive color always recommended All-I on the GH5 but also Long GOP codecs from the S-Series for his LUTs.
  5. So I have un update on this. I had somehow missed some firmware update that was supposed to fix a stabilization bug. The IBIS could stop working after a WB setting or something along these lines. I flashed the FW v.1.3 and it seems to be working correctly now. I obviously want to test it a bit longer but first observations are encouraging! 🙂
  6. Yeah, that rear wheel was problematic for me too so I ordered the part on eBay and replaced it myself. But this one seems difficult to solve, I never dropped the camera, I always handled it with care. I guess I’ll ask an authorized service to see how much it would cost but if it’s too much I guess I am for another camera. I don’t think I would buy the same model though after this experience….
  7. Hey, thanks for that. I tried the fix and it seems to work until I turn off the camera and turn it on again after a while. Then it’s jittery land all over again…crazy.
  8. Hey there! Bad news, I’ve just realized the the IBIS in my GX80 camera doesn’t work as it should anymore. 😫 I bought the camera new in 2018 and I just noticed today that when I shoot a video the IBIS seems to be working correctly for 3-4 seconds and then it starts an awful jittery movement without me doing anything. Same thing on video and photo modes. Even if I turn off the IBIS it can still do those jittery movements but maybe a bit less pronounced. At first I thought I got some problem keeping my hands stable when I realized it does that also when sitting still on a table. It’s as though I was trembling when holding the camera. Anyone had such a problem with theirs? I’m afraid that a repair could cost more than a new camera?
  9. Yeah, the mini HDMI is a bit of a bummer, on the other hand was thinking, if one would like to use an external recorder wouldn’t a cage be necessary? In that case there’s a nice mini to full HDMI adapter that can be screwed on the case and makes the whole connection much more secure. Like this one for example: https://www.smallrig.com.de/products/smallrig-ultra-slim-4k-hdmi-adapterkabel-c-bis-a-3020?variant=37399680975021&currency=EUR&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=Cj0KCQiA64GRBhCZARIsAHOLriLGQc8X8UW5_kTXTgq4_VQVMo1yulOUnYiewRds8mIJQHooMPRLZucaAjY_EALw_wcB
  10. The S5 is still a relatively new camera, I don't think a replacement comes in the near future. My prediction is: a replacement for the S1H will come first, maybe next year? And after that we could see an S5 replacement, maybe in 2024 or so. I don't think there will be a replacement for the S1 though...
  11. That’s crazy indeed! I guess the S1 being the first of the FF line has some functions missing that they added later to the other models. I’m really pleased with the S5, I like the fact that’s it’s light and small but the image quality is there. I’m really not sure why the FHD modes on the S-series are so soft though. @kye I shoot 4K mainly but the occasional FHD pixel pixel mode for extra reach or the ultra slow motion in FHD is sometimes useful. At least, the ultra slow motion from the S5 although still has moire, it’s not that pronounced as in the GH5. The GH5’s 120fps for example is a bit sharper but with much more moire artifacts than the S5’s. Anyway, I’m always upscaling that FHD footage to 4K with an AI upscaler and I know that is not what a purist would do but the upscaled footage looks so nice and usable so I’m happy with the result.
  12. And of course it’s limited to 40sec per clip. For short bursts though it might be useful.
  13. There’s a way to get downsampled FHD on the S series by using the live cropping mode but set the cropping to the full sensor. It’s only FF 30fps or APS-C 60fps though. Still, much better FHD quality than the regular FHD modes.
  14. What about the 4K120fps that everyone needs so badly lately for “cinematic“ b-roll? And the 5.7K so you can too be a real YouTuber and influencer as well as be able to be lazy with your composition? I kid, I kid! 😁
  15. Yeah, and if you lift them 5 stops you get green lines for free! Sorry, couldn’t resist! 😆
  16. In my experience it doesn’t, I’ve shot a lot of low light shots with 2 stops under, never saw anything like that. But I don’t want to argue, if you can see it, maybe it’s there, if I can’t see it, I’m a happy S5 user….
  17. Ok I see, makes sense now.
  18. Yeah, I quickly tested that. It is much less pronounced with HLG rather than V-Log, which is not a good choice for underexposured images anyway and only starting to be visible with 5 or more stops of underexposure. In which point the image lacks so many details and contrast that is in my humble opinion unusable anyway even without the horizontal lines. When and why would anyone want to use an image underexposed by 5 or 6 stops is beyond me to tell you the truth. Not in my use scenario...thanks for pointing this out though, it was a fun experiment!
  19. Wow! Is that with V-Log only or have you seen it with other profiles too? I’ll do some tests with my S5, I’m curious if I can reproduce this.
  20. Has anyone any stills to show from that "horizontal banding" in the S-Series cameras that I've never encountered after 1 year of shooting with the S5? Genuinely curious...
  21. Interesting...I haven't noticed that with the shadows but I generally try not to push highlights and shadows too much in post. Good to know though. My workflow with S5's 4K60fps is to add a Neat Video node with a very subtle noise reduction and NV's sharpnening tool on 100% for the tiny details only. To my eyes it's then indistinguishable from the regular 4K24fps. The 4K60fps from the GH6 I really can't judge from YouTube.
  22. DR boost is fine and all but still one stop less than the S Series. So, no I'm not selling my S5 for the GH6. Extra IBIS is nice too but I don't walk with my camera and for tripod shots the IS boost give approximately 1.5-2 stops more to the S5's 5 stops. Prores is useless for me as well as 5.7K. I don't see any meaningful difference and I don't want to deal with the huge files. 4K is plenty enough for my use and if I want a bit more I can live with my S5's 5.2K internal. Which I almost never use. The only thing I envy a bit is 4K 120fps but either 4K60fps slowed down with Davinci's Speed Warp or 150fps FHD upscaled to 4K with Topaz Lab's VEAI is enough for my needs. And 120fps I use only once in a blue moon. I'm not a professional, I know, but I don't think the GH6 interests me. Maybe in a couple of years to a discount price but still .. GH6 plus Speedbooster plus lens...it's huge for running and gunning handheld stuff.
  23. I’m using native L mount and vintage lenses. Mostly Canon FD glass.
  24. I don’t know…I only shoot manual but never had problems with the focus peaking on my S5. 🤔
