So by this same token, can you have a guitar guru who knows everything there is to know about guitars but whom has never picked one up to make music?

Well, are there instruments for measuring the accuracy of an instruments sound? Thereby taking all of the human factor out of it? Gerald uses charts math and science to review most of the gear on there which requires zero artistic skill whatsoever. Or do you think the engineers at Sony that design the sensors and put together the cameras should have a cinematic portfolio as well?

  2. for me, I basically need a b-cam that I can shoot 50 or so 10-20 second clips in 4k60 over the course of an hour or two. Having a hard time figuring out if this will actually workout or not. Now I'm reading the 4k60p is the low quality mode? lolllllllllll wtf. and if i have to keep it in 4k cropped mode why even buy this over a 1dx m2

Why not wait a bit to check out some original files and some real usage reports and then decide.

Checking out the original files is also very important as they are heavy on HW requirements....

Forgot to add in the other post R5 4k 120fps is miles ahead than 1080 120fps of the 1Dx ii and iii that is barely usable.

Yeah I can definitely see the value in having the r5 for the "short clips" of 4k60p and occasional 120 here and there. Especially for shots on a gimbal that would get the 4k60p full frame auto focus in there. Yeah maybe just need to wait longer and see real world results. Someone needs to put a damn r5 in the sun and press record on 24p already lol

I answered in the other thread.

btw 4k ff 30fps no crop binned does not overheat (apparently from the canon doc)

Just read, thank you for the insight. Yeah trying to really feel this out since its a costly upgrade. Considering also just 1 r5 for gimbal only and stay with the 2 1dx's for the rest

  5. Okay so specifically for wedding/event/interview long formats (think 1 hour).

    R5

    4000 $ after taxes

1.4 Crop Pixel Bin 4k to avoid over-heating ("indefinite" at 72 degrees, what about 90?)

    10 bit 4k, Autofocus, IBIS

    Half Filesizes with h264/h265

    1DX Mark II

    3000 $ Ebay Special

1.3 Crop 4K Proven body no over heating

8 bit 4k, Autofocus, No IBIS (but tripods anyway)

Nearly double filesizes with older compression

    -------------------

I wonder if the 8bit vs 10bit will be that noticeable?  Having a better filesize would be nice, but otherwise it appears to be a tie with the 1dx being more affordable?

    Missing anything here to consider?

I have the R5's pre-ordered but feeling like they are not worth the upgrade for this specific task.

If you want what Canon gives you the best of (in my opinion: color, general IQ in terms of a pleasing image (not necessarily sharpness), autofocus, variable ND adapter, lens selection, b-cam to their cinema cameras), then I think the R5's workarounds aren't awful. As I view it, as a b-cam to C300 III to always have on a gimbal, I can use 8k raw, 120fps, or downsampled 4k when I need the supreme IQ or on commercial shoots where I'll mostly just be firing off 15-30 second shots.

But if I really must use it for long takes, then I'm perfectly OK with 5.1k oversampled, APS-C crop 4k. I'm sure it will be beautiful, not pixel-binned, and won't have to worry about heat. Maybe because I have plenty of APS-C lenses (Sigma's f1.8 lenses, Canon's 17-55mm f2.8), I don't mind using those lenses on doc-style, long-take shoots.

Sure, it would be better if it didn't overheat, but keeping the body small to always have on a Ronin-S on standby is a decent tradeoff.

I want to feel the same way, just worried what may happen say during a hot day ~90 degree weather, will the 4k 24p over heat on a long take or not =/

also if im using the 1.4ish crop for all of my long form shooting.. wtf is the point of buying it over a used 1dxm2? Same crop, more durable, tested and proven body, though I guess 8bit vs 10bit.

Canon released a full statement about the overheating issues.

Basically says that the R6 overheats in all recording modes around 20/30 minutes.

And R5 not overheats only in 4K30 full sensor (not oversampling). Every other mode overheats at 20 minutes.

This will be a deal breaker for so many people. I didn't want to believe it at first but wow. Where I live I have +25 degrees Celsius from August to May approximately, with 7 months with 32+c. Damn!

Yep this absolutely just screwed sooo many people lol. R6 is out. R5 is a just maybe now but probably not for a hot outdoor wedding. Thinking two 1dx m2s and 1 r5 now but that would be super annoying with ef and rf lenses so maybe just going with 3 used 1dxm2s idk

  8. This over heating stuff puts me in a weird position. Really need to get some clarity on exactly what modes the R6 overheats in. Will it be better because its IPB and not All-I? Is it only limited to 4k60 Full Frame? What about crop mode? If the crop is fine, then its still a better buy than a used 1dx m II or even a 1dx m iii if ur only goal is 4k 24p and 4k60p and can live with the 1.4 crop.. or will the video look like garbage in the crop mode?

Yes I know, I am annoyed that it looks so good on paper that it is hard to resist.
Although I will build up my lens kit first and keep using the R for now, that is always better. But if I see a deal that gives some discount over the MSRP, I will jump on it.

The 1DX III has a 1.33x crop mode, and it is cinema 4K, so I guess the 1.4x UHD crop on the R6 is pretty accurate. I have some really great compact Leica lenses with a nasty magenta cast towards the edges and heavy vignetting.
They are getting completely cropped out for video, so it's a dream scenario for me, if the IBIS continues to function well with these, it's a huge improvement over 1.75x crop and no IBIS even if I ignore the frame rates. But I actually shoot the 720p 120p sometimes, so I won't, it is a really great feature to have.

The Sigma 18-35/1.8 is also downright perfect for covering this image circle, so I sincerely hope it won't force the camera into a 1.6x crop mode or something when mounting it, with the latest firmware it does that on the EOS R, no option to shoot FF.
The Canon EF-S 10-18/4.5-5.6 IS STM also covers this crop through almost the whole zoom range.

Both should work, but whether Canon will allow them to work, we don't know, it would be pretty stupid to restrict these, but we know how Canon does things.

Lets hope it doesnt overheat when cropped too
