That’s what I am working on right now… Canon ticked some boxes, but not enough and an R7 was part of that plan, but it’s not to be for me. Great detailed write up and big 👍 for taking the time.

A pair of them are my current workhorses for hybrid work. Along with an S1H and a currently disabled S5. I shoot both 8 bit 4K 50p and 10 bit 5k 25p with them and personally think that the 5k SOOC (flat profile) is some of the nicest footage I have seen. The AF is more than pretty decent other than a lack of reliability in forward tracking unless using f4-8 where it gets quite reliable, especially with native lenses, but these don’t have that much over Sigma. Two weaknesses for me: I wish the 5k was 50/60p 15 min recording limit I am sure I am not imagining it but there does seem to be something a bit more special coming from this sensor, especially in 5k mode and that must have something to do with it not being Sony? No Vlog but yes it does HLG, but as I’m more than happy with the Flat profile, not tried it.

I don’t think this is so crazy and am actually surprised no one is offering this service. Or maybe someone does, but I don’t know about it… I’d like to see the transplant of some modern digital gubbins into a Contax G2 body.

I always fancied trying one of their Go Pro mods because the issue I have always had with action cams is how wide they are.

I think it’s a good call actually. As you already said, you messed up a few things so I suspect if you went back and re-did the test, it would be a different result?

OM-1 Does the X have 4K 50p 10 bit…not sure, but regardless, I just wanted the most compact package possible. GH6 was out due to AF and I didn’t see any point in the APSC suspects of R7 and XH2s flavour as it’s all just getting slightly bigger and bulkier and I may as well then go the whole hog and FF. My self-imposed rule of thumb going forward is it all goes in one single 30 litre backpack; 2 bodies, 3 lenses, 1 drone, 1 tripod, on camera lighting and audio. No more lens swaps, no more multiple trips backwards and forwards from the car parked 1/4 mile from the church, before and after, on 40 degree C days etc etc etc. Honestly fatigued now with how destructive regarding creativity and simply having the right tool in my hand at any given time and…there’s rarely a good time to change, but if something actually is broken…and it is, got to fix it.

Button pushed, arrives Friday. I have 7 weddings left this season so going to give it a whirl for static full length ceremonies & speeches and then still on a tripod for all entrances & exits ie, static tracking stuff and then gimbal for those few occasions where I now use one. It’s replacing the ZV1 and S5 and the 20-60mm kit lens, so I am hoping to get the tracking of the little Sony, but with better quality (and 4K 50p instead of 4k 25p) in a compact package the same size & weight as the Lumix. The ZV1 has overheated 3x in a row with the long stuff and the S5 rear screen is now hanging off, so the timing is just about perfect to give this little beast a go. I can’t see it doing anything but shining in it’s role actually. The only thing I don’t like about it (so far) is the flip out side screen and I wish it had the GH6 style, but can’t have everything I suppose…

Ditto. It’s the one thing on this list that I couldn’t really do without now and has been one of those ‘game changer’ things they talk about. Tripod was slow, monopod faster but still not as quick and portable as my own two hands. -
Yes, I’m taking with a pinch of salt some of the reviews etc, but I think for my needs, essentially as a static locked off B cam or good light, lightweight gimbal cam, plus personal travel/mountain hike camera, it should tick the boxes. I’m going to try it anyway and if it doesn’t work out, there’s always MBP 😜

Log: Hate working with it, hate grading it. Flat profile all the time with me and previously Eterna with XT3. I would like to give raw a try for certain things, but not all the time due to storage really. But otherwise Flat profile with a few manual tweaks and a light grade with Filmconvert Nitrate. IBIS: XT3 used to be tripod all the time and I actually prefer the completely locked off shot…but it’s not practical for my work, so IBIS it is. 10 bit: I don’t mind 8 bit and use it a lot with my S1R’s in 4k 50p, but trickier stuff like couples at sunset, 10 bit definitely shows it the way. AF: The only time I use it these days is for forward tracking and acquiring initial focus, otherwise manual. This is more because I don’t fully trust the Lumix AF and there are situations, important ones, where I need to trust it. My next system, whatever it is, must have great AF. I’d be up for a challenge but realistically, Jan soonest as my workload for the rest of the year is 🤪 -
I think I’m about to buy one… I thought it was off the agenda but I have pretty much decided I am going to get a Z9 next year unless anything else comes along that can match it’s spec as a long term keeper along with the Megadap adapter and the Tamron 35-150. There just isn’t anything else that even comes close for my needs without needing multiple bodies and lenses, - it just ticks every bloody box! I need to pair it with something that can shoot 4K 60p, 10 bit, internal, unlimited recording, great AF, compact and light for smaller gimbal work plus longer static stuff. OM-1 tops the bill for me. The S5 needs to go in for repair anyway and my previously trusty ZV1 has overheated on 3 jobs now so I have stopped using it and need something for the rest of the season, plus going forward. There’s little difference in size or weight (2g!!) with lenses, but it’s got good AF and from what I have seen, quite a neutral colour science that will match up nicely with almost anything without too much effort. There’s a few lenses I am not using either so together with the S5, most of the cost of the OM-1 14-40mm kit combo plus I’ll pick up the 17mm f1.8 for gimbal work. I’m going to lose a bit of low light capability I know, but having had a play with some gimbal work now, I’d like to develop that some more and after 25-30 jobs with L Mount, I can’t see any future for me with it sadly, for my needs. The image quality is stellar, but it’s requiring me to need too many bodies and lenses and it’s slowing me down and eating into my creativity. I cannot see the next gen S models hitting my needs and especially on the lens front. Fairly sure I won’t be getting a Z9 this year though due to lack of availability and I’d be lucky to pick one up even for my last job off the season (only 6 weeks away) and then it’s 6 months off, so no point!

FP options = Lumix 24-105mm f4 which has OIS Fotodiox adapter with any EF-L Mount lenses and there are both zooms and primes from at least Canon & Tamron with OIS. The Fotodiox adapter with built in ND is great so I’d look at pairing that with ‘your focal length ef Mount Canon or Tamron prime, or just going for the Lumix zoom?

No Vlog but it does have HLG. I haven’t tried it though, too busy mid-season (by this weekend, 10 weddings behind on editing) so zero play time for anything like that. It depends on how you define ‘good’ but there isn’t a time I can think of when I’ve thought, “the DR on this could be better”. It is a pixel:pixel crop mode, but that doesn’t bother me except in one regard and that is shooting hybrid, my stills and video don’t match in focal length, something that is a deal-breaker on my next system, whether that remains L Mount or otherwise. -

And do not discount the S1R… These are now exceptional value on the used market and the 10 bit 5k 25/30p internal flat profile footage is seriously underrated. As in just about nobody talks about it, because just about nobody uses it. But as long as you don’t need to record for longer than 15 mins and don’t need slo mo (or if you do, the 4K 50p 8 bit is excellent), it produces beautiful image quality. There is some kind of special sauce in that 47mp sensor only shared with the Leica SL2 and Q2. -

It may just be my imagination Andrew, but when you post, there is more engagement. You are the forum leader after all so as it should be. However, when you go quiet, so does the forum. As Kye suggests, more content from you is 100% the way to go. Providing you have the time of course! Where’s the OM-1 ‘review’ for one thing?! Maybe I am a bit olde schoole, but I am a fan of forums for info and a bit of chat over anything else that has come along since and sadly I have seen several die and in each case it was because the leader stopped leading. Lead Andrew and they will follow… -
Heart would choose/have chosen, FP. Head though, S5. Easily. Especially if you do not wish to rig it out. Pulsing can still be there if you; A: use AF all the time and B: don’t tweak your AF settings. Mine are -1 and -3 respectively. How I use all my Lumix cameras these days is to use AF to acquire focus and then immediately flip the lens to manual focus. If the camera is on a tripod and I am tracking and need reliable AF, ideally a native lens plus f4-8. These are of course ‘workarounds’ and it’s really only in faster/fast paced forward tracking there can ever be an issue with the subject actually remaining in focus, but used as above, works for me.

Wildlife, wildlife and more wildlife seems to be the market. Oh and traveling types. I was very interested for a while due to various factors but in the end was put off due to sensor size (pretty sure I would always have had regrets in that department) and cost. Ultimately I was going to get much better AF in a much smaller package but would have been trading image quality and for me that would have been a step in the wrong decision. I think I’d still pick it over the GH6… Though the OM-1 has a ‘stupid’ rear screen and the GH6 a superb one…

The iv came close to being the first Sony I could make a proper case for as a hybrid. Except that crop. I came from XT3 where it was the same crop as the stills. No problem. I am with Lumix S and retain the crop but have better FF stills. The iv would just be a sideways move for me, so nope. Otherwise looks a decent bit of kit.

That’s what I mean as in just because it can, in a pinch, doesn’t mean you would all the time. I have given a lot of thought as to whether I could just film a job in it’s entirety, make the production…and then pull off the stills. 4k, yes, it can be done…but with limited results. I know, I have tried! 6k, also yes…but even more limited for me as I could no longer shoot 50p and though it produced a bigger DNG still, it lacked some detail compared to the 4K. 8k, now we’re talking…but would I for a full job? As a ‘one off’, sure I would like to give that a go, but I am 50% a photographer so wish to keep practicing the art of capturing a moment rather than grabbing it from some footage. That’s why these video-centric cameras that can shoot stills don’t interest me…though I did look at the 6k Pro as dedicated a video tool. My need is genuine hybrid capability in the same unit, ‘equally’ as good, video and stills. Not just output, but ease of use/control/capture.

Yes, seen the rumors on that and something is supposed to be announced very shortly; either an 8 or a 6/7iii. I think an 8 is most likely. The rumor-mill seems to think other than the lack of a built in grip, it will skip a few other details including the 8k 60p raw internal and limit it to 30p. That would be the dealbreaker for me right there as the (limited use) 8k 60p is one of the key factors for me. The other being that 35-150. 24-70 = too short outdoor 70-200 = too long indoor, not wide enough outdoor 24-105 = a bit short outdoor, ceremony and speeches at weddings especially and a bit slow for my tastes, especially indoors. 24-70 + 70-200 = 2 bodies + 1 tripod or lens swapping, but still not having the right focal lengths all the time. Some would argue that 35 is too wide and 150 not long enough. Not for me. I rarely shoot wider than 28/35 and have no need for anything over 150, stills or video. Quite happy to swap for a wide zoom for those rare times I do need something wider as those times are only ever at the start and the end of a job with about 9+ hours in between. Of course the only real test for anything is actually using any bit of kit on an actual real job, but having had 20+ years practice in photo & video and 10+ in hybrid, I know my needs. I have added my name to a Z9 waiting list but that’s as far as I can take it for now, so we’ll see…

Nah, I don’t think that is correct. You have: IBIS which stabilises all lenses Lens stabilisation Certain combinations that work together and almost always native, this latter option usually offering +1 stop of stabilisation over just IBIS. Some cameras offer the option to tweak the IBIS to match the lens/focal length. But otherwise, nah, any lens, even a cine will be stabilised on a camera with IBIS and it does not have to be native. Yup, it’s e:shutter only and initially I had reservations about that having used all my recent cameras in that mode at times with mixed results and tried another e: only camera, the Sigma FP/L last year. Based on my results/testing, I had to say no to the Sigma, but unless folks are lying and faking the results from the Z9, it’s in another league/highly useable except in certain extreme circumstances and certain strobe use.

Quoting myself 🤪 The thing is, if I was a pure photographer, I wouldn’t even be looking as the system 100% fulfills my needs. Easily. If I was a pure videographer/filmmaker, ditto. It’s easily better than I am. The issue I have is as a one man band hybrid shooter. It requires a very specific set of tools to do it properly and to date, no single camera or system has existed until the combo of Z9 + adapter + Tamron 35-150 came along. Other than size & weight (a compromise but not a deal-breaker for me with the rest of the benefits far outweighing this minor ‘issue’) whatever the L Mount collective do next, they have extremely big boots to fill/equal, but I doubt, beat.
