This could be the end of my 80D (used mostly for birding at this point).

Which lenses will you use if you are using canon for birding? Full frame emount are prohibitively expensive to be used on a crop sensor camera.

Yeh it seems like a great casual, compact camera. One of the reasons I was holding out was because of the the lack of primes, but I'm really pleased they've now released a 32mm f1.4.

Can anyone tell me how much of a delay there is when switching between evf and LCD

How would you compare it to the c100s 1080p?

I really just need a point and shoot camera that I can carry around with me for casual stills and video.

sounds like having good autofocus would assist you then. Plus the 5d iii workflow is a pain. For me the eos r comes close as an option because of the nd fliters and the autofocus. Makes life so much easier. If you pair it with a ninja, the only downside I can see is the rolling shutter.

a comparison between the Pocket 4K, Arri Alexa and GH5. (mostly for skin tones, dynamic range)

He had another video saying how he wouldn't review the eos r. I think after seeing how bad he missed focus here he might want to give that another thought. The skintones for the gh5 look pretty bad imo. Not sure if it was because of the LUT he was using.

The drama surrounding this camera is almost surreal :)

I sent in my trade in camera yesterday. No idea where in line I am for the EOS-R but probably way back. Maybe all the internet drama have shortened it a bit..

Not judging by people's reports from photokina. Seems like this camera was quite popular. The sensor might be old but its still a 30 megapixel full frame sensor with some crazy nice colours and cheap lenses.

You know what.... at this point, even if Sony put out an a7S3... its like... oh ok... another contender that has caught up to the benchmark that Panasonic is setting.

In fact, I would even say that Fuji is really setting the bar here... just when Panasonic goes FF.... oh yeah? MF is really the direction the industry is going ?

Ha ha good luck to those trying to carry that brick around with them. Makes the 1dx mark ii look portable. It will be some time yet before these cameras get small enough and cheap enough to have any sort of market relevance except as a niche object of desire.

Or you could up the sensor size even further and go for this combo of LS300 and Angenieux 25-250 which will give you a 10x zoom camcorder/cinema camera hybrid (which we will brand as a Cinecorder ;) )with an aesthetic that I think you can get behind for around £3K used all in.

Add in the Ninja V and you've got 4K60p as well for another £600.

Plus if he likes vintage lenses and wants a smaller sensor so he doesnt have to fuss around with focusing he can use the ls300 in s16 mode and get some nice s16 super speed zeiss lenses for cheap to give him a similar look.

  8. s16 was the standard for indie film productions for the simple fact that it was portable, cheap and you didn't have to fuss around with focus. You put a wide angle lens on and put it in f5.6 and you are golden. Camcorders offer much of the same conveniences. But I can't help but feel the newer variants do look dedicedly more video. s16 should be max 2k like the digital bolex.

Having said that, I have seen xc10 footage which I would say is filmic:

That would be my first choice. My setup for the kind of intimate filmmaking you are talking about is to have a s16 digital camera, and have my talent wired with a tascam dl-10 and team lav mics. Gives u great freedom and mobility.

No. Smaller sensor are easier to stabilize mechanically, like in the case of GH5 or Sony stabilisation. This is not the case here. This is 100% electronic digital stabilisation. No difference whatsoever with a FF sensor. Don’t give excuses to those companies, cause they got none. The electronic stab with canon is pure joke, and Sony well it’s not digital but does not come close to this either.

For your info, the way they do this is using an accelerometer and they know camera movement so they just crop the image and stabilize according to this movement. A company released an expensive device to put on a GoPro that does that and necessitates lots of processing through their software. Here everything is done real time in camera. That’s incredible. By the way the company that released the device did one for dslrs too. Again this kind of stabilisation the sensor doesn’t matter. This could work as well on a medium format camera, doesn’t matter. The reason why it’s not on your 5D is because canon Sony Nikon all of them suck. They won’t put an accelerometer and they won’t code the algorithms. They are too stuck 5y behind.

This is the future of stabilisation though. Sensor mechanical stab can’t touch this. Even with a small sensor like GH5.

Seriously? Forget Casey’s shit he did not activate the hypersmooth in most of his shots except the ones mountain biking. Watch other videos and H6 vs H7. It truly is remarkable even walking or running. In fact it’s so good it feels more organic than gimbals because there is a little movement.

The future is software based. The japanese are not good at sofware that I can tell you. They can make hardware alright but something as simple as a menu system is a no go. It will take the americans innovating in software to get us anywhere near a gimbal-less future. Look at the strides google and apple are making with their algorithms. Can't wait to see where we will be in five years time. These old japanese companies will struggle.

But isnt 'electronic stabilisation' just something that you can do in post (with a much more powerful processor)? Mechanical stabilisation aka ibis or say DJI Mavic gimbal is stabilisation that works before PP.

too much information and data is lost if it isn't done in camera so the results cannot be anywhere near as good.

Other than the sensor, the main difference in between the Z6 & Z7 is the AF system: Z7 has 493 phase detect points vs 273 on the Z6.

It would appear on paper that with half the PDAF points, the Z6 AF could be significantly less accurate.

I think it has more to do with acquisition rate and the algorithm than the sheer amount of the points.

But at the end of the day, the price is inevitably a factor here since this camera doesn't just exist inside a vacuum. The context of the camera market and what other options are out there now to compare the EOS-R to factor in with that price and the camera just seems like it's bound to fall short for most.

Have you done a comparison of the prices with lenses bearing in mind most people will be buying used ef lenses and the 99 dollar adapter? . I did the calculations for myself, being the owner of ef glass, and to get a sony it would be more expensive by a couple thousand. So I'd say that's a pretty big incentive for people to continue with canon. But even if they are new to the game, do the calculations for yourself and see which is more expensive for you based on the lenses you use.

I can put EF lenses on my Sony A7s. Same thing. Hey I am not knocking Canon, hell I think I just bought a C100. Will know in a few days. My son has a 5D mk III, Canon Rebel. They all get the job done.

When I bought my Sony A7 I never owned a Sony lens for it for 2 years. Couldn't afford it. When any new camera comes out with all new lenses it is a ball buster to afford to start from scratch. The Nikon Z6, Z7, this new Panasonic FF, all will be the same. Look at all theses people talking about the XT3, they are going to whipping out some cash too for a new system. Nobody ever said video was cheap. Especially if you want the latest toys.

The trouble is with the new toys you don't have any excuse if your footage sucks in this day and age!

Yes its true but if you put ef lenses on an a7riii you are really compromising the autofocus and do you want to do that when you are spending 3k on a new camera? Probably not. Even if you do go down that route, which they did in the video, they put the price for an adapter on the canon bringing it up to 2.5k (choosing the more expensive adapter), but fail to mention that you will be paying 400 for the metabones adapter for the sony to get ef lenses to work lol. It is just a dishonest review, but it doesn't matter because at the end of the day like you said people will realise just how expensive it is to change systems and will bulk at the price considering how little difference there really is between cameras.

For canon shooters like myself who own ef lenses getting a sony will literally cost me thousands more than the canon. There is just no rational reason for me to make the move at that price when the eos r gives me some great features that the sony cant match and where the sony is ahead it isn't worth thousands of dollars lol.

The c100 is a great camera, I miss mine ha ha.

Which one of these Cheap Canon lenses you going to buy? Cheapest one is 500 bucks. No used ones either. But I don't see Any company giving away lenses as of late.

    Canon EOS R (Body) -
Canon EOS R with RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM -
Canon BG-E22 Battery Grip for EOS R
Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens
Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM Lens
Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro Lens -
    Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens -
    Canon EF-EOS R Mount Adapter
Canon Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R
    Canon Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R

Well, if like it says in the video they are using an adapter it means they will be using ef lenses, which can be had for cheap, especially on the second hand market. I don't think anyone would dispute that.

    New comparison video.

It's funny how they say the a7riii is in any way comparable on price to the eos r. Firstly, he says the adapter is $200. Yes, but you can get the basic one for $99. If you are using ef lenses on both cameras, the autofocusing performance with the sony isn't good enough for the amount of money you are spending on the a7riii. You'll then have to spend ridiculous sony lens prices on top of the camera price.

What is odd to me is that someone would even bother to post that rubbish. Even if you don’t care about the features I mentioned, the video is pretty much worthless.

What is odd to me is someone who goes onto this page who clearly doesn't like the camera and interrupts people with his negativity when people who are interested in the camera try to show examples of the footage or discuss it. There was footage there, however limited, so I thought I would be helpful and post it. Now can you please leave us be if all you are going to be is negative. We get that you don't like the camera.

With preproduction firmware, the performance looks on par if not better than Sony:

Well the vids shown are of one person in frame - the example i put was with multiple people and you can clearly tell if you watch to the end that the camera gets confused and can't find a face amongst the crowd. I don't think it is near as good as the sonys but for vloggers it is probably acceptable. Camera companies in general are crappy with their software but fuji in particular.
