  1. I use it with the GX85 so I would guess it works on the G85 as well. Didn't know it doesn't work with G7 though... That sucks!
  2. I have been looking into the highlights / shadows settings and testing with 0/0, -3/+3, -5/+3. If you’re shooting in a high contrast scenario it can help against clipped highlights to shoot -3/+3, 5/+5 etc. But by doing so this setting also affects saturation so keep that in mind. Shooting -5/+5 increases the saturation the most so to match the other shots I had to add a little more saturation in the -3/+3 shot and even more in the 0/0 shot. 0/0 Raised the highs and mids a little, and lowered the shadows a tiny bit. Added a little saturation. -3/+3 Raised the highs and lowered the mids a little, and lowered the shadows a tiny bit. Added half the saturation as 0/0. -5/+5 Raised the highs the most and lowered the mids and shadows a little. No saturation needed. In the end I could get the same result on all three settings but I think I will be using -3/+3 or -5/+5 with standard 0, -5, -5, 0 as I feel they gave a better starting point for a quick color correction and grade. Any thoughts?
  3. Contrast -5 seems to be the same as H/S -3+3. Have you tried just raising the shadows (+5) and leaving the highlights at 0?
  4. Yeah, it's a pretty good performer and 3200 ISO is usable but maybe not in a close-up like that Cool! Interested to see some footage and hear your opinions about settings and such.
  5. They're both set to Natural 0, 0, 0, 0. WB 6000 K and the same lens. No color correction. Even with the same settings the GX85 is a little brighter so maybe that have something to do with it? In that video the WB is almost spot on with the GH4, whilst the GX85 is very different although they were both set to 6000 K. After making a few comparisons I agree with you that the GH4 has slightly better highlight rolloff and yields a more pleasing image (less contrasty), especially with Cine D and off course V-log. On the other hand when I actually used the cameras it was easier for me to achieve better results with the GX85 due to new color science and noise performance. If the GH4 sensor wasn't so noisy I wouldn't have sold it as I really liked that camera! When the GH5 finally arrives with the best of both +++ I will upgrade as soon as possible and probably keep that camera for years to come.
  6. I agree, and that's where the log profile for higher DR is needed. Wonder if DR is any better with Cine D on the G85. Doesn't this mean that we just have to choose what to sacrifice (clipped highlights or shadows) and live with it? I have found that how I expose is more important than small tweaks in the picture profile. Please share if you have some examples of your tests!
  7. I agree with what's already being said here, @DPC and @mercer, about not setting this camera up for heavy grading and that's why I use Standard 0, -5, -5, 0. I also underexpose a little as it seems to yield nicer skin tones in my tests. I know it's flat lighting and maybe not the best example, but what do you think of those skin tones @DPC? Too contrasty or saturated? Would appreciate any feedback! It's the best I have achieved so far. Isn't the lack of a log profile is the main reason why Luis du Mont's skin tones look that way? Original: Corrected WB, lowered mids and raised the highlights: @Raafi Rivero don't know if this is any useful for you but here's a video which could have an interview situation. Standard 0, -5, -5, 0.
  8. Check out the thread below for some spec comparison between the GX85 and G85 which is basically the same camera with better ergonomics etc. There's a and first look from B&H on the G85 which is very informative. Here's a video showing both noise and crop comparison between the GX85 and GH4. As you can see there is less crop in the GX85 and that's probably going to be the same or better on the G85. As for image quality I sold my GH4 when I got the GX85, but I will pick-up a GH5 as soon as it's released.
  9. Is it just me or is the footage of the Karma launch video looking a whole lot better than the Mavic video? As @wolf33d said the Gopro package offer a lot more but it's obviously not as compact.
  10. Well, the colors of your footage looks nice to my eyes! Thanks for the kind words!! I feel like I'm getting better with every video, but some of my old footage is not that great at all. I try to learn from past mistakes and pick up tips here and there. The most important thing I have learned though is to WB, expose and light to have the best starting point (probably goes with out saying but if something is overlooked it makes it so much harder to correct in post). Basically getting to know how to set up your camera for best results. I shot that video in the summer on my own actually using a Aputure VS-2 as a monitor with a long HDMI cable. I waited until the sun had past the windows and set WB to 6000 something. Then I underexposed by about a stop as especially skin tones look a lot better that way without a log profile on this camera . Standard 0, -5, -5, 0 and that's it. I used Color Finale to adjust contrast, and adjusted WB with color wheels and curves. I spend some time using the built-in Apple color picker tool to check WB on the black kitchen counter. It's a little time consuming but it was definitely worth it. So actually a pretty simple setup and grade in the end I tried for so long to get good looking natural colors and I finally feel that I actually know what I'm doing. Next up will be trying to learn how to make more creative look's for other stuff. I get why you want the Canons though, the footage is really nice!
  11. Judging by your latest video posted here and for example videos from Jase and Javier Lopes (Abandon) it seems pretty close to me in terms of image, but I haven't tried the XC10 off course Would love to see some side by side comparisons! Be sure to post them here.
  12. Thanks. I used the 12-35mm X and ISO was 200 if I remember correctly, maybe 400 on a few shots. @mercer I've been meaning to ask you about the GX85 vs XC10 now that you have used both for a while. I take your latest as post as it's pretty close with Panny's new color science? How does the DR compare?
  13. I think it's the same video quality. If I could choose now I would definitely get the new G85 because of the ergonomics, bigger evf, mic jac, articulating screen, better battery life, optional battery grip, Cine D/V, etc. Especially if you don't need/want the GH5. But if size is important the image seems to be the same. I believe frame rates and bit rates are identical as well, but not 100 % sure. Informative video about the G85:
  14. Thanks! Yeah, the color definitely seems to be improved. Waiting for the GH5 myself. I really miss the ergonomics of the GH4. I used window lights with 2 x 110 cm round reflectors. I have big windows on the left and waited until the sun had passed, between 12:00 - 16:00. So basically just indirect window light with reflectors. One of the great things about the GX85 is that you can underexpose by a little and adjust contrast in post to achieve better colors and DR without getting any noise on low ISO. With the GH4 I easily got noise in the shadows in my dark kitchen, so it's really refreshing being able to shoot underexposed clean images and pull it up in post. @Cinegain The Leica 15mm f/1.7 is really nice on the GX85
  15. Agreed. But that is something I'm willing to trade in for the more versatile focal lenghts and the "Pana Leica" look. I usually use the X zooms in controlled environments and primes otherwise so f/4.0 on the long end is workable for me. With the 12mm, 15mm, 25mm and 42,5mm I'm pretty much covered for lowlight and all my lenses will be a little bit easier to match in post even than a mix of everything. I also really like the new modern design of the GH5 and can't wait to put in a preorder, hopefully in a kit with the 12-60mm!
  16. @Cinegain I see what you are saying and I agree that Panasonic should have a camera that sits over the GH-line. Only problem with that is I think it have to be S35 sensor and they don't have any lenses for that, yet. They could off course do what JVC did though. It seems to me that Panasonic is doing a major overhaul with their cameras from the bottom the top. First it was better low light (G7), then the stabilization (GX85), then the (G80) with a better ergonomics (battery grip, mic jac, dual IS 2 etc) and finally the GH5 which is going to amazing no matter what they do with it. 4K 60p, IBIS, probably at least 120p 1080, 10 bit 4:2:2, V-Log etc. They have to compete with Oly as well now so I don't think there will be no holding back this time. It sounds like a camera I could have for years to come. Panny are really "fixing" all the things people have complained about. Anyways, it could very well be that they are releasing a camera above the GH line if they see a market for it. That would be amazing but not for me at the moment. I think the GH-series is the perfect compromise as hybrid shooter and I really miss the ergonomics of the GH4 which I replaced with the GX85 waiting for the GH5. Also the new Leica zooms look nice. Will probably trade in my 12-35mm and 35-100mm for the 8-18mm and 12-60mm. I really like the look of the Pana Leica's and my kit next year will probably be the GH5 with PL 15mm, 25mm, 42,5mm and the two zooms, and maybe the 12mm and 50-200mm somewhere down the line.
  17. Is anyone shooting on their GX85 and have some videos to show? I finally got a workflow that I am very happy with. It may not be the most interesting video for you guys but please have a look and tell me how what you think about the colors? It was shot in standard 0, -5, -5, 0 with only natural light and reflectors. The edit was done in FCPX using Color Finale.
  18. Andrew Reid, this looks great!! Any chance you will be making something similar for some of the Panasonic cameras, especially GX85, the new G80 or GH5?
  19. I made a test comparing iso 400 - 6400 on skin tones if anyone is interested: It looks pretty good up to 1600 and I think, but it's still usable in from 3200 all the way to 6400 in some situations. Might need some noise reduction though...
  20. The criticism part was sarcasm. I thought he was being a bit harsh and not so much constructive in his criticism. Anyways, will there be a video you can post here when it's finished?
  21. Nice constructive criticism. I agree that it's too smooth though, but it's still a nice frame I think.
  22. Cool! Will be interesting to see the new video and hear your opinion on how the shoot was compared to the other one.
  23. Easy, wait a few months and get two GH5 Panasonic really stepped ut their color game with the GX85. But off course you won't get that Canon AF, but then again, neither does your Sony... Too bad Canon don't have a nice B-cam option for the 1DXii. Doesn't that mic require an on-body wireless transmitter? Another option for audio that I've seen on lot's of yoga videos is to record the vocals later. Just let her do the practice and add vocals in post. Like this for example:
  24. Looks much better! Post the video in this thread when it's finished?
  25. Thanks! I did use two camera on this one, but I will only use one the next time and take two takes if we want more angles. That is obviously easier with out vocals... As you said, it's a pain to match different cameras and lenses and that's also why I will only use one camera the next time. The wide angle is a GH4 in 4K with 12-35mm X set to 12mm, and the close-up is the GH3 with 25mm Pana Leica. I liked the colors from the close-up angle the most so I tried to match the wide angle to that one and it worked out pretty good I think. I think you did a good job matching them btw and the stabilization looks nice too. I doubt your audience would notice. My video was shot with natural light but I do have 3 Fotodiox 1x1 LED's similar to LS. I think they work ok as fill lights in bright scenes, but in dark scenes like yours they need diffusers to soften and spread the light for more even distribution. I use a cheap 110 cm 5-1 reflector like this (the bigger the better) https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-43-inch-Collapsible-Multi-Disc-Reflector/dp/B002ZIMEMW In my experience it's really difficult to light scenes like yours, especially with just one light source. I'm no expert by any means, just sharing my experience.
