  1. **There was some audio distortion in the last upload of the video so I re-uploaded it.**

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to share a promo I just made for DKNY with the Sony a7S. This was made as a tribute to my beautiful wife, Kari, whom passed in August 2015 from Cystic Fibrosis - a chronic illness with no known cure. Every shot but the New York B-roll was with the a7S (with the Atomos Ninja Flame external monitor/recorder in 4K), and graded with FilmConvert. I hope you enjoy the video.

Please let me know what you think!

    Best wishes,

    Bradley

Voted. Beautiful video. Loved the shot of her twirling on the beach. And obviously the end where she smiles at the camera.   Good luck with it.

Thank you so much! Your compliments truly mean the world to me! Thank you so much! She's an angel. :)

Voted. Loved to see her smiles. Those happy moments.

Thank you so much, BopBill! She was an absolute warrior and no matter how hard it got, she always had the most beautiful smile on her face! Thank you for your support! :)

  5. Hey guys, I am currently in the running for the People's Choice award for best music video for RIVVRS: CONQUER! If you could take a few seconds to vote that would mean the world to me!

This is a very important video and winning this competition would be such an honor and a blessing. Not only is it a tribute to my beautiful wife Kari, but to all the Cystic Fibrosis warriors out there - past, present and future. The winning video will get a lot of exposure, and that means a lot of awareness for CF! That's the goal!

    VOTE HERE:

This was all shot in the Sony a7S and I hope you guys enjoy. It's a project near and dear to my heart.

Again, here is the link to vote below! Please vote!

Having a decent script is awesome. It's always a challenge to make a great movie, regardless of a strong written foundation.  Hope you can pull it off!

Regarding Vimeo: my wife and I made a very very modest documentary that we put on Vimeo, and we see a trickle of income from it.  We've never bothered to promote it, but it's a topic that has a niche so orders keep floating in.  If you hook into a supporting community, they will prop you up a little bit, which is certainly nice.

If you think your film is good enough for the upper echelon film festivals, then yeah, give it a shot.

As an active member of a small SoCal film fest I can tell you, we're desperate for films with a creative POV, from filmmakers that have an actual voice.  There's plenty of decently crafted films that we see, (because of the democratization of production gear) but not a heck of a lot that are truly accomplished with compelling and creative cinematic storytelling.

I'll be completely honest here (so don't tell anyone I wrote this)  --it's personally a bit frustrating to screen some of the films we screen.  But ultimately that's cool.  That's all part of it.  My tastes in film doesn't exactly jibe with the rest of our selection committee's POV.  To put it diplomatically: We're "diverse."  To state it realistically: We put average films in the festival.

    1. because we need the programming.

    2. particular topics, rather than cinematic creativity, will appeal to our selection committee.  (This is not necessarily a bad thing, I'm just acknowledging a typical situation of film fests)

As it happens, almost all good films that get submitted to our festival will get into our festival. (there's some ideological politics involved as well that go into the submission decisions --that's the nature of a committee)  But, be that as it may, we're a film festival that's incredibly embraced by our community.  Every single screening during our 5 day festival sees attendance of 150-200 people...and this is in a proper theatre venue that officially seats 185.

So, if you ever get accepted to film festival be wise and do your research regarding what sort of event they present.

It's a bit much to travel across the nation to attend, go to your screening, and then it's you the filmmaker and only 4 other people in a sunlit conference room with a LCD projector... Experience that firsthand and you'll get a rude awakening of the sad state of some so-called film "festivals" these days.  This doesn't even take into account the festivals that exist solely to generate submission income and then dole out laurels and empty awards, while never even holding physical screenings.

Our festival may be small, but at least it's legit.

At any rate, PM if you're interested.  I'd like to hear what you got going.  Also:  Good luck in general!

    Lots of great advice here!

I'm very curious about your film festival. Do you accept music videos? I have a project very close to my heart. It's a music video that is a dedication to my wife Kari whom passed away from Cystic Fibrosis. It's in honor of her and for CF awareness. I'm trying to get it out to festivals and different places around the globe to get as much outreach and awareness for the disease.

The artist of the song wrote my wife's and my favorite song and we became good friends over the years. We collaborated on this special project for her.

Let me know if it sounds like something your festival might be interested in.

    Best wishes,

    Bradley

  7. I'm selling my Pro Kit NX1 with the S lens and everything else for $1750. Great condition, like new. And it has had a glass screen protector since the day I bought it. No scratches on the screen. It's not new like you wanted, but you'd never know it. Perfect shape.

  8. I'm selling the S lens NX1 bundle with extra battery and grip from the US. But it's used and you seem to not be interested in going that route. It's looks and works like new with no blemishes. Very lightly used. Take great pride and care with my gear. Just wanted to let you know and reach out if there is any interest. The only reason I'm selling it is for extra funds due to moving soon. Let me know if interested :) if not, good luck on the search! It's a great camera!

    Best wishes,

    Bradley

  9. Just have to say after shooting in both UHD and DCI 4K... I really think DCI really shines. I have't measured the differences, and I'm only using the eye test, but I will now shoot exclusively in DCI over UHD. Gamma DR, DCI 4K and the 16-50mm S lens is a dream. Loving this camera, and can't wait to see what some of your custom settings look like. I will have to experiment some more after I finish up my latest project. You guys are awesome!

Just did a small video on some shots I had lying around, still testing rendering, but rendering in 4k def. makes it a lot better, still highly compressed though. Anyway hope you guys like it, not much love was put into grading on this one, unfortunately.

Looks awesome, man! What did you use to do that opening 10 second tracking shot through the trees? Handheld or on a dolly of some sort? GREAT SHOTS!

  11. This is absolutely gorgeous. I too would love to hear about your settings and grading walkthrough on this. Is it similar to the wedding you you posted a few weeks ago? Bravo man. This is incredible!

Been to busy filming this past week, heres a few shots, this will probably be not the final grade, but its getting there.

  12. I almost always shoot in DCI, less rolling shutter than UHD and I like that it lowers the sharpness a little. I work at a movie theater and video landscapes that go in to our preshow so I actually use that aspect ratio and resolution on a weekly basis.

Awesome! Thank you :) I will continue to use it. I have preferred it and unless there was something I wasn't seeing that other had encountered, I was going to continue. Glad to hear that people get good results!

  13. I use DCI 4k, it's my go to resolution on the NX1. :)

Thank you, sir! That is mostly what I have been using myself, and I'm glad I'm not the only one! I haven't done many "technical tests" on the NX1 yet - just the good old eye test. I have been strongly preferring DCI. It was just after doing research online - where an OVERWHELMING amount of people decried DCI - that I thought I might try to get a collective set of people's opinions on the matter whom have had the camera much longer than I have.

    Cheers!

  14. Well, in my tests DCI actually produced (slightly) better resolution, so in my opinion that claim about UHD being better is total BS...it was true with early firmware versions, but not now. If you don't believe, check it out yourself, don't trust outdated tests.

More importantly, I shoot in 4K to have the flexibility to reframe for a FHD output, and DCI gives a bit more to work with. Also, I generally shoot with both NX1 and NX500, and shooting both in DCI 24p helps with combining the two footages into a multi-camera shot (on Premiere Pro). I also do 3D VFX work that is 24p. And I definitely don't care for film, so 23.976 is just an anachronism as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for your thoughts. As I haven't performed tests on it yet, I have no idea personally of the differences. Only just bought the NX1. I have shot scenes on both, and I thought they looked remarkably similar. A lot of people say that DCI has less resolution, others say not so much - that's why I wanted to have everyones input :) I don't disbelieve either group until I do some testing myself, so no worries! I was just hoping to get a quick look at what people think and how they utilize either or choice. Thanks for the help! Really appreciate it. Very helpful, indeed!

Who here still transfers to film??? Very few if any!!

A feature that you may want projected in a theater. Which I personally don't need, but some might! But you're correct, very few transfer to film these days!

DCI offers no advantage and can produce slight syncing issues if mixed with footage shot at 23.98 framerate.

Yes, I mean shooting strictly in one or the either. Not mixing. And if you were to mix you'd have to do a conversion to match the two - which would add an unnecessary wrinkle to the mix.

  15. I was wondering if anyone elects to shoot in 4K DCI over UHD. I know there has been some pretty conclusive stuff for UHD actually having more resolution than the DC1 4K mode of the camera. Also, UHD has 23.976 fps which for things not to be later transferred to film is the desired shooting method as opposed to DCI's 24p only option. My question is... does anyone actually shoot in DCI or is everyone shooting UHD and cropping to the desired ratio after the fact?

    Best,

    Bradley

  16. Heres my settings for the camera on these shots :

    Saturation -2 // Sharpness - 10 // Contrast - 3 // Master black level 8 // 16-235 // For these frames I used the Canon 50mm f1.8 and Samyang 24mm f1.4.

As for the grading, I used no input lut, just the Sunderland (deluts) Lut at 100% // Fade 44 and Sharpen at 18,5 (though I will decrease this) !

As for the curves go, heres an image of how it looks, notice I also lowered a bit of saturation on the yellows and reds :

Heres a few more shots with this grading :

    FNPdod6.jpg

    e0M8OXs.png

    qqqLVcX.png

    4Jl2kRt.jpg

Some of these will require noise reduction, some are shot at 1080p others at 4k, and I will probably tweak further.

I find this grading very versatile, it fits mosty of my shots with little to no tweaking, outside, inside, church with those terrible lights and all that.

Hope you guys like it :d

This looks absolutely PHENOMENAL. Wow. You did an awesome job here. Thank you so much for sharing. This might very well be my favorite look of all the NX1 posts I have seen yet. Amazing stuff! Did you use Gamma DR or Normal Gamma in camera?

  17. Just finished a re-edit of my first wedding the NX1 (fortunately, wedding season is over !), I didnt re-grade, just made it smaller. Hope you guys like it :

    C&C are always wellcome !

All I can say is that I bet they were really happy with your work here. You did a really great job. Some really wonderful shots in there. Shows what the NX1 is capable of in good hands. Congrats!

I am assuming the NX1 will be coming out again for next wedding season?

  18. I've always liked the look of Red cameras (not as well as ARRI mind you), and so far the camera looks pretty darn good. Even their "inexpensive" models cost quite a bit when you actually get them ready to shoot... but if you have the funds to procure one, they are beautiful!

Having said that, I love my NX1 and a7S combo myself :)
