  1. Get a shoulder rig man, great shot setups in here but it looks like it was shot with an iphone because of the jitter.

Most of these shots were slightly stabilized in post and still looks jittery haha! I have plenty of rigs I could/should of used but only had about 10 minutes to get the footage and was really just wanting to see how it performed in day light. It's also good to know hand held isn't so great :P

The Samsung NX1 is a pretty incredible camera! Especially for the price of $1499. I've been getting myself comfortable shooting with it and in the process edited this test video together.

The Camera has a 6.5k super 35mm sensor that it down samples to 4k bringing a very detailed 4k image that rivals that of the most expensive cameras out there. Even those ranging above 20 grand.

The Camera is also capable of shooting 120 FPS at 1080p with hopes of achieving 240 FPS in the next firmware update.

The Camera records to H.265 allowing for very small file sizes while maintaining excellent quality.

The camera also has 11.5 stops of dynamic range which is perfectly usable and on par with cameras like the Blackmagic production camera, Canon C300, Red Scarlet, and so on.

Got my hands on the Samsung NX1 so I thought Id do a quick simple comparison between my T3i and the NX1 just for kicks. I also show off its overall 4k quality and the on board sound coming from

I would just like to add that this camera is absolutely amazing!

I filmed this whole video on the Rokinon 24mm f1.4 Canon mount with the Fotasy EF to NX adapter.

I graded the clips with Magic Bullet looks within Sony Vegas Pro 13.

I would like to note all the color banding your seeing in this test is caused by turning the in camera noise reduction all the way up and then compressing it in conversion. So this is a worste case scenario.

  4. That was incredible. Not just how it looked but the writing, music, acting, and so on was just suburb! Visually the cinematography was fantastic!! Love the use of colors and dark contrasted shadows as well. Seriously great job on this.

    Thanks! :)

  5. Here is the manual of nx500:

    http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201503/20150313082358453/NX500_English.pdf

    - no pro setting for video

    - max 40mb/sec bitrate

    - 120fps in 720p (not in 1080p)

    - no advanced video settings (gamma, mbl, ...)

I believe it will eventually get all those thing (Probably not the slow motion)  in future firmware updates. The NX1 base firmware was exactly the same but they fixed it with updates. I'm positive they'll load a new firmware onto the NX500 as well.

  6. IF you want 1080 RAW the pocket cinema camera is pretty much on par or better than the 5D's RAW video. Although I will add that the pocket is not really a very good camera. It overheats, breaks down for no reason, and has cost me 2 productions in the process. So I can't recommend it unless you like taking risks with faulty gear.

  7. Even with the crop this camera is about the same sensor size as a GH4 and even larger than a Pocket Cinema Camera/BMCC. So it's still a pretty sweet deal when you look at it that way. Its basically a 4k Pocket camera with interchangeable lenses and the option to go to super 35mm 1080p. Id still buy the NX500 over a GH4 if those were my options. But the NX1 looks far more appealing so for double the price as the NX500 id say its worth just getting an NX1.

  8. Someone should message Samsung and ask them to implement a 2:35:0 crop mode where it only records the image in that ratio. allowing the Camera to have better and more controlled rolling shutter results. Its the same with how the full 4k mode has less rolling shutter over UHD because its not scanning as much of the sensor do to a slight 1:85 crop to the top and bottom. Now image now much better it would be in 2:35?  Plus that aspect ratio works perfectly for a lot of filmmakers who'd be cropping their videos anyway.  I don't know how to submit suggestions to Samsung on future firmware features but I definitely think this would be a welcomed idea.

  9. The NX1 is one of the most detailed 4k cameras you can get right now. Its down sampling from  6.5k sensor which really does show a major difference in quality. Its Dynamic Range isn't as good as the A7s but its around 11.5 stops which is perfectly usable an in my opinion not at all a downfall. The 1080p mode on the NX1 in my opinon looks fantastic! Especially with it having practically a global shutter.

  10. It looks to me like the blackmagic is terrible and is most likely going to be put out of business by samsung! ;) (kidding of course). I'd say the only downsides to the Panasonic is its lack of lens Change ability, and, sensor size (not very shallow DOF in this comparison). The rolling shutter on the nx1 is not that big of a deal when you look at all the additional downfalls of each camera. Some might disagree but I think the nx1 is the biggest bang for your buck. It's also my choice of upgrade. Blackmagics do create the most pleasing images but do to all the downsides like battery life, file sizes, low light performance, it just become the type of camera I'd rent if I need to shoot raw or something On a production with a bigger budget that can't quite afford reds.
