Here is what Standard default looks like on a sunny day (NR -2):
To me, that's what I saw, and what I wanted to convey.
If you want something unrealistic with a "look" then you may want to use Natural as a base. But it is not at all clear whether you should also drastically reduce contrast, saturation and sharpness in the camera when you shoot, since altering those in post forces you do it on a highly compressed, 4:2:0 8-bit video. Camera settings, however, are invoked prior to compression.
I think you should get the look you want in the camera (whatever that is), but others seem to want to do more in post based on severely altered from normal settings in the camera. Why not try to get the camera to produce the look you want (there are lots of controls), and then tweak in post from there, rather than trying to get a "blank slate" out of the camera that needs a lot of work in post? No flat setting really mimics RAW video. In any case I am not advocating your videos should look like the one I posted; it is just an example of what one setting produces.
thanks very much markr041 - will try that
btw - surprised how many negative comments in review below on video quality of the GX85 - especially DR wise - I'm genuinely surprised

at 10 minutes in - specifically states thinks the G7 has better video output than the G85
-
could anyone recommend a good reasonably all round starting point for video please - settings wise (contrast, sharpness etc), and WB - don't want to spend hours colour grading - but don't mind doing a bit (using Resolve)
also - I'm so shocked at audio quality from internal mic - anyone recommend an external please ?
currently I'm between a H4N (would it attach to hotshoe via adapter ?), H2N, Tascam DR-40 (same price as H4N in UK) or Sony SX2000 ....

I see DXOMark has reviewed the GX80 now - looks good to me
http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Panasonic-Lumix-GX80-GX85-sensor-review-Diminutive-design
similar DR to the APS-C sensor in my Nex 5n - which matches my qualitative views from the photos I've taken so far
Bought a Hoya Pro ND16 filter the other day - what a difference it makes to the video quality
I've seen a few complaints around various forums about the Dynamic Range on the GX80 in video - I'm surprised

I saw this video a few hours ago. I did not notice as great a difference as I was expecting (ala G7). But, the Crop factor on the GH4 is way too much.
did you watch same video as me - substantial difference in background noise between the GH4 and GX85 in that test video
-
-
same sensor as G7 I thought ?
-
thanks for settings and process you used markr041 - very impressive
have to say - looking through pictures I took of my kids over weekend - this sensor seems to take some of the highest detail photos I've had from any camera (and I've owned a good cameras, including 4 DSLRs) - if this is partly due to no AA filter - I know what is on top list of features when I buy my next camera
100% ish crop - with minor sharpening in PP. This is with the 14-140 II .... - not bad really !
-
nice video - impressive demo of the IBIS !
I was expecting video to be good - and it is
but the stills have caught me out - I'm getting really nice sharp photos from my 14-140 II - wheras previously I was always disappointed with my G6
this is just a "snap" in the garden - but the camera and lens has done great I think
-
why would the 4k output be fine on the GX80/85 but soft (comparatively) on 1080p ? less in camera sharpening ?
-
I was very doubtful ref my commitment to M4/3s after the G6 - useability great - but photo quality - wasn't convinced with - just didn't like the output much, dull, seemingly not great DR, and files didn't seem to like much post-processing Lightroom
GX80 was cheap enough to take a punt on - at a minimum would make a great video recorder
But .. GX80 from initial tests seems much better photo wise vs my G6 - photo ouput seems very similar in IQ to my Nex 5n - and that is a VERY good thing - the sensor to me seems much much improved

went to park with daughter this afternoon
what an amazing little camera the GX80 is - the IQ is stellar both for photos and videos - I'm really impressed
the photo quality far exceeds that of my G6 - I'm even enjoying the 12-32 now ......
-
ok ok - maybe I'll give the 12-32 a chance then ! cheers
it seems near silent with it's OIS at least - unlike my 14-140 II - so may get around the annoyance I have of very loud background noise when taking video with the 14-140 ...

Just found out that this camera + 12-32 lens was on sale at Currys last week for £499 - Panasonic £50 cash back - £100 for lens on eBay = £350 for the GX80 body. Crazy.
Prices back up to £599 - £50 cash back, but that was almost as good a deal as the G7 on sale for £250 with cash back last November.
yeah that was the deal I went for (except I got John Lewis to price match ) great value for money
just now deciding whether to sell the 12-32 on or keep it (have a 14-140 II)
not really tried the 12-32 yet - but feels a bit like a toy

I clock sync all devices before recording. This allows me to manually reference basic shots and audio relativity.
Then, I build sequences of shots/audio to scenarios I need sync'ed.
After that, plural eyes to connect tracks. If some "miss" I can usually line them up by eye.
...and when I'm 30 feet from my subject at a loud crowded venue, the internal mic is not recording useful audio of my subject's voice. So it requires doing it manually.
It's all a very annoying step of production that would be pleasant to avoid.
fuzzynormal- thanks very much for taking the time to reply - useful tips/workflow
Tested the GX80 photo wise out today - and its impressive, I seem to be getting much sharper shots out of my 14-140 II - not sure if it is the extra steps of IS (probably), lack of shutter shock, or better sensor, but overall the IQ is noticeably better
the images seem nicer colour depth and DR wise than my G6 - very noticeably so. The output from the GX80 reminds me of my Nex 5n - which is a good thing. Previously when out shooting with the 5n and the G6 - the G6 photos were noticeably "duller" - just something about them seemed flat - and they didn't like much post-processing (probably lack of DR)
-
I'd not swap the EVF on the G6 for the in-built IS on the GX80 though ....
-
i'm finding the EVF ok - it does what it needs to do really
My G6 one is much bigger but still not accurate enough to really determine if in focus or not
I prefer both EVFs to my DSLRs I owned previous (Fuji S5 etc)
I'm going to experiment with the 12-32 tomorrow - feels like a toy compared to the 14-140 - but hoping less IS noise
the IS noise is really annoying in videos
I'd have bought a G8 or GH5 - but the GX80 will do in the meantime
Question - but not to go too off-topic - if you use external recorder, how do you work out which audio is to which video when you get back from a day or week or shooting ?

Onboard will have what sounds like a faucet running in the distance due to the IBIS. When in a windy situation, you'll need to find a way to protect the microphones. Other than those limitations, all is good. Seriously, external solutions are the only way to go. The audio is good enough for syncing, but that's about it. Personally, I don't have any problem working this way and making that little extra effort for good audio pays off.
true thanks
I've just come back from a day out with the kids - party, dry ski slope tubing
cannot believe how much better video is with the GX80 vs my G6 - obviously 4k vs 1080p, but that aside, the overall quality seems better, and what a difference the extra stabilisation makes, makes the videos seem far easier on the eyes to watch - no constant jiggling
it even coped with me taking a video from one tube to my daughters, whilst zooming down the ski slope
that video looks smoother than ones I've taken with the G6 just standing !
very impressed - great little camera
-
took a few pics - late at night here - took a few videos - image and video stabilisation works incredibly well I'm very very impressed
only big BUT at the moment -is currently audio is a bit unusable - I could hear fan noise when I took a video of my daughter - couldn't work out what it was (pretty loud and very obvious) - its the noise of the OIS in the 14-140 which is only a cm or so from the microphones on the GX80 .....
mmm
-
well size caught me out (no local shops had one to demo)
after thinking grip way too small - putting a finger underneath and all good
build quality seems better than my G6
EVF "OK" - useable - no real issues
-
Javier lovely video - nice one
thanks for taking the time to share settings - I'll give them a go when I get to try my new GX80 out
btw - your English is excellent - no need to apologise !
-
my GX80 arrived an hour ago - looking forward to giving it a whirl
GX80 + 12-32 but will probably ditch the 12-32 as have a 14-140 II
had one of UK stores match the £499 price for kit package so pretty happy - as after cashback means £450 - which including the 12-32 seemed good value to me
-
I'd have been tempted with a GX8 as I like the form and fit - it feels nice in the hand
BUT I get absolutely fed up with having to consider shutter shock all the time on my G6 (with my 14-140 MKII)
add the built in IS and its a no brainer
-
theRenaissanceMan - thanks very much for the reply

how does the sensor compare G7 vs say the latest GX80/GX85 ?
is the G7 newer tech and therefore lower noise etc or about on par ?
presumably G7 and GX8 same sensor ?
but GX85 ?
