  1. OK....I guess I should clarify my post....by traveling, I mean exactly that...TRAVELING...and I would never have any camera going down a river in a speedboat (though the fact that the GH5 can, does not seem like a negative to me!)...and as a sailor the only power boats I ever go in, would be a dinghy with a little outboard motor to get me from anchorage to shore...but I'm still impressed by the lack of RC in the GH5 and this footage help me arrive at that conclusion...for shooting in a work situation (whether traveling for it, or not) I use a Miller 22lb fluid head on a heavy duty tripod as my rig weighs in around 18lbs...I can however see grabbing a shot with the GH5 that lasts only seconds though, in an inconspicuous manner and that's one of the ways for my use, that the camera would distinguish itself...I would never walk with it....would never use it on a gimbal and if I wanted movement, would do so on a dolly...I don't even zoom on zoom lenses while rolling...so...different needs for different people...but for my use, this is exciting!
  2. Very impressive....rolling shutter is down Alexa territory!!...and never thought I'd be into a camera with stabilization but with this you can truly travel without a tripod....have not been this excited about a camera in a while!! @Jonpais....the 3rd part of Hugh Brownstone's to GH5 or not...interesting perspective he brings to the why's for a camera (completely different from mine)
  3. Sorry about the model Jonpais!...so you're using the Gorrilla pod as a light stand?...if so, great idea and is it effective?
  4. I opted for ordering the Leica 12-60....I only own 3 Panny lenses and 20 something legacy lenses (yes I have problems when it comes to buying lenses) and opted to replace the 14-140 which I use for traveling or Sunday in the country kind of shooting...I opted for the 20 mm extra reach of the Panny Leica over the speed as I find the longer reach handy when my 5 year old is running around...for interiors the 20 mm 1.7 is so small, it's like carrying around an extra lens cap?...anyway....my other motivation for the 12-60 was the rack focus on the GH5 which I can see as a wonderful feature for narrative or commercial work!
  5. Jonpais...somewhat off topic but do you use the Gorrillapod as a rig or for locked off shots with the G85?
  6. Hi Jonpais...just PM'd you for a bit of much needed advice on my part! Thought it best to keep my question private....thanks much in advance!
  7. Hi Jonpais...sorry to bug you in a PM but I need a bit of advice....I will build my GH5 into a heavy rig and am considering a "walk around " companion camera for the GH5...would you recommend the GX85 (I think it is) or the G85...interested in the stabilizer in both...don't need it pocket sized, but need a cheaper travel cam that can potentially match the GH5...I know you own one of these 2 cams....perhaps you own both?...anyway would value your opinion on this!

    All the best

Hi Fritz, I've got the G85, I love it, really have no need for the GH5, but I've preordered one anyway. I think it would make a perfect companion to the GH5, and color-wise, I'm sure they'll work together perfectly. It's by far my favorite Panasonic camera yet. BTW, I've been using AWB for some shots recently and much to my surprise, I've found it to be pretty good as well.

Thanks much Jonpais...I figure its worth the extra money over the GX85...that body seems a bit small for my taste...advice much appreciated!

  8. +111...There's a reviewer who normally shoots Sony (forget the guy's name) who compared a film clip from the movie The Rock to GH5 and the noise in the $100 million plus budget shot on an Arri-flex S35 was unbelievably bad compared go the GH5....
  9. Not quite sure why one would base your decision to buy the GH5 on Metabones or not?
  10. I knew I wanted this set up because I looked at both the Varicam LT shoulder Pad and the Zacuto...they are both used with the VCT-14 plate...there are knock-offs...but if you're patient, this will last you a lifetime. Below is an old one on Ebay...the Sony's work especially well as you get heavier cameras or rigs on and off...I would not hesitate to get an old one...professional piece of rigging you'll only buy once! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-VCT-14-/182485692194?hash=item2a7cfeaf22:g:Q64AAOSwTM5YxGCt
  11. Also thought I read somewhere that the ANUS claims 32 stops of DR...May have been on C5D but I really can't be sure...of course at $25 million one would expect no less...does the ANUS even come with a battery?? Definitely looking forward t Andrew getting his hands on both the ANUS & GH5 so we can get some real world back to back comparisons!
  12. Priceless Andrew!!!...if you get sick enough of EOSHD you clearly can seamlessly morph into writing comedy!...perhaps even funnier though are the 'concerned"comments about the satire in this piece...WTF...I guess a good sense of humor not acceptable these days?...The way the world is going these days with the idiots who are now in power, I think levity is more necessary than ever....well back to the 'Lab" I guess to study "unusable 10bit and Vlog" on the GH5
  13. Seems like C5D's trying to back out of this very carefully....should really have applied some of that caution when making the extremely inflammatory statement about "unusable 10bit and Vlog" in the first place!
  14. Bought my VCT-14 plate on eBay virtually New for $160...will work equally well with an Alexa as my set up and last a lifetime... You can see how the adjustments are done fore and aft to keep the camera and lens and all else like a mount or monitor you may hang...this setup works easily between 10 & 30 lbs.
  15. I solved a height issue on my rig by first mounting the camera and cage on a Sliding quick release plate. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JLK5Q4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This in turn is then mounted on the Zacuto Universal Base/Shoulder plate...gives me room for a FF and up and down adjustments and finer balance depending on lenses used on the Zacuto I have a Sony VCT-14 plate permanently mounted on the tripod...the whole rig comes off in a couple of seconds and on your shoulder
  16. Agreed...though seldom mentioned, the EVF will turn out to be a big thing on thing on the GH5 IMO....also mastering and experimenting with the focus peaking settings will help enormously also....off topic, but the GH 5 has so many video tools, that mastering it is going to take some time!...one of the reasons why I bought the 12-60 Leica in advance
  17. Hi Jonpais....is it only wide open that you have difficulty with the Nokton or at other stops too?...always been curious about this lens ,so would appreciate a few more words of your experience with the Nokton when you have a moment...for instance does the difficulty persist when you have the camera locked off...
  18. Hi Andrew...we just watched Knight of Cups the other evening...Director Terrence Mallick and DOP Emanuel Lubezki....the moire on any stairwell scenes were so bad, it actually looked like a special effect....yet they don't seem to give a shit...because they're making a feature and overall Mallick makes visually some of the most stunning films in contemporary times...and in a way that's what I appreciate the most in how you view cameras in EOSHD....as a tool...not something to be squinted at at 400 percent zoom, but something that's possible to operate under the rigors and schedule of making a feature...not a single frame...because a frame represents 1 24th of a second in a 2 to 21/2 hour film....whether the tool overheats while you're shooting ....or is limited by how long you can shoot or is reliable, or can shoot while you're stumbling in the dark, are all choices the individual has to make for themselves, but if I had to say one thing that stands out for me in any piece of gear you write about, it clarifies for me as a filmmaker whether that piece of gear would work for me as a tool or not, and that as a resource is at least for me invaluable!
  19. Hi Andrew...my 2 cents worth...you are both a gifted writer and have a great eye with a camera, and have somehow managed to maintain integrity through the years....regardless of your decision, there has been much benefit to the EOSHD members as a result of your work....as you will get your GH5 long before I get mine, I am definitely looking forward to what you do with the camera, as well as a shooters guide for it, if you choose to do one!
  20. Not a big fan of moving a camera, but if you must, see below for inspiration! Just because you can, does not mean you should...unless you can do this!!
  21. Yes...the skin tones on the James Miller footage are beautiful!...add to that overall image quality...stabilization....the controlled rack focus feature (no small thing by itself!) plus a ridiculously long list of additional features, and this camera becomes an easy choice...simply nothing approaching it even remotely, within a few thousand $'s in IMO...glad Panny takes their time with the GH releases and just keeps upping the standards that other companies then play catch-up to!
  22. Yes...I understand...and it's really about getting the image to a place you can live with...so it 's not a distraction, but the camera just gets out of your way so you can tell the story...for me, I guess I'm lucky that I like the image LOL...just bought the Leica 12-60...never thought I'd spend that kind of money on a Panny lens!...anyway I saw the footage you shot at the Santa Monica Airport? with the Micro...you made that footage sing!
  23. I must have been lucky with my GH4's...still very happy with the cameras...though I don't do the stress tests that you do...I'm simply more than happy with the image and what it takes to operate the camera!...Looking forward to the GH5 also!....Saw some lovely footage from you on the BMMCC though....did'nt you have to come up with a major workaround to make that camera work for you? And for those waiting for their GH5s...some anamorphic footage shot on GH4 I just saw today!....
