P337 reacted to Julian in Digital S16 marketing, Black Magic vs. Digital Bolex
Digital Bolex is $3299 retail... For me, that's not a comparison at all. I never considered the Bolex because of the price. I pre-ordered the Pocket Camera as fast as I could. It's quite a difference.

If price doesn't matter, I hope the Bolex offers more than the BMPCC and I guess it does. Anamorphic 4:3 mode, XLR, etc.

I think the Bolex is more for filmmakers who want that S16 look. The BMPCC is for everyone who wants great quality at a low price. The small sensor is just a consequence.

As far as im concerned, The digital bolex folks have no room to talk until they actually release a camera.

Andrew shutup!  Canon, Sony and RED might buy up all the sensors or try to shut CMOSIS down to delay my camera! lol

But seriously, thanks a lot for this, I hope you're right.

And thanks Julian, your post convinced me to pull the tigger on the pocket pre-order, if there is even a chance it has this sensor I want it.

    Hmmm...

    Kinda looks like this:

    http://ccdcmos.com/products/cameras/scientific/CIS1021-sCMOS.htm

Based on the CIS2051 (which is 5,5 megapixel, so could be the BMCC sensor?)

    Google CIS1021:
Found a 42 page pdf about it: http://alliedscientificpro.com/wp-content/uploads/MAN-0103-CIS1021-Datasheet_RevA.pdf

    What do you think?

Nice upgrade from the GH2, but will keep my RX100 - 2 tiny cams in the bag!! yes

Sorry Sony, Canon, Panasonic, and Red.  Any new announces at NAB are now irrelevant.  Blackmagic has stolen the show again.  My Panasonic GH2 is now GH through and I welcome the pocket cinema camera with open arms.

For the low-budget film maker, the Pocket Cinema Camera is a "game changer."

If you're a GH2 user looking for much more DR and detail in the shadows, I can't see the GH3 bringing much new to the table in terms of image quality.  By comparison, the GH3 is looking like Panasonic's 5D mk III: an expensive incremental update that, while competent in its own right, fails to fundamentally change the industry to the same degree as its predecessor.

    1. Shoots slow mo
    2. Bigger sensor
    3. Takes photos

If you want to take photos with the M43 lenses you use with your BMPCC, and get the bonus of a decent B cam that can be used for slow motion work, then yes.
But it needs a price drop yesterday.

Although, let's not forget that if you're so inclined, you can go to a store and take home a GH3 today. BMD have a lot to prove.

You mean the one that was poorly focussed and poorly tracked @:40? You could do that with a glidecam, its a smaller setup than the Movi.

So here is a video on FreeFly's older Cinestar 3 Axis servo Gimbal.

It is $1,500 and I think has the ability of remote tilt and pan because he mentions his camera operator preforming tilt moves and pans while they're flying (seems to be 360 degree pans, 60 degree down tilts and 30 degree up tilts). Ah I think you need FreeFly's Radian sensor packs too, one for each axis servo which adds up to about $1000 for all three.

It has the same 3 axis setup as their new MoVI except the new one uses brushless motors (like the 3 axis $3,500 ZenMuse) which are (smoother?) (quieter?).

Not sure how much weight it will support but the video implies no trouble flying a 5D mark II setup.

Just add a few handles, wireless monitoring and a power supply and you got a MoVI MiNI lol (kinda)

Thanks Caleb, well said.  I think this wouldn't have contracted any of its negative reception if it wasn't for the overzealousness of others.  If Vincent had just shot with it and gave a shout out of how great he thought it was would have been a lot better, unfortunately he decided to make a big spectacle of himself and the product for its announcement.

Comparing it to the 5D2 announcement was like he went around saying he had found the Holy Grail to us paper cup users, but then it turned out to just be a $100 plastic thermos.  Sure it's an improvement and would be great to have but we've seen something similar to it before and doesn't change the way I drink everything.

Anyway something a stabilizer like this can do that would be hard or impossible with anything else is a steady straight down tracking shot, like following someone down a hole.

Lol, well you have diffraction to fear at smaller apertures you know!!! lol

Anyway, another thing that I am seeing from the footage from these stabilizers is how precise and smooth you can move through the scene, very much reminds me of the way the camera moves in digitally simulated environments like in CGI movies, my brain kept telling my I was watching CGI but I knew better!  So I just realized, this could really help when mixing in CGI elements with real life footage.

Living in Canada I will end up with a snow owl, which is white. Do you think I should dye it black so it doesn't reflect into the shots?

Actually, this time china was first (zenmuse)..
This is nothing more than customized cinestar gimbal with brushless motors and side handles.
Right now there's quite boom in rc multirotor industry, new brushless gimbals are produced everyday, just look at rcgrups and other rc forums and they all can be easily adopted to camera handheld work... price range will be from $60 for gorpo sized cameras to top $2000 for BMC size/weight.
Here is one of cheaper solutions, just add handles and you have moVI

This is not made for the purpose, it's made for quadrocopter and than just customized with booms and clamps for handheld use. Im am long time cinestar user...

All controlers for stabilisation have Mems Accelerometer, Mems Gyros,Magnetometer..etc (zenmuse, picloc, tarot, skyline, radian and you can look into new one cheapest, made just for brushless - alexmos)

MoVI do pans and tilt the same way as any other stabilized gimbal on the market that use 3 brushlees motors (roll, tilt and pan) and zenmuse does excatly the same thing... You can see on the clip that they are using rc station, they have not even made yet dedicated pan/tilt + speed potentiometer joystick and tht's easy thing to do, expecialy if you plan to charge it 15K...

    @Andrew

Everything nowadays needs a superlative. Films are all blockbusters, software is awesome, video gadgets are gamechangers. The FS-700 was a gamechanger, the BMCC was a gamechanger, the Speedbooster was a gamechanger.

For a, er, change I think it's good to stay cool. This is not cynism.

An improved steadicam, very highly priced. That's it.

I like it. I really want it.

But am I actually handicapped without it?
