Hey guys,

To start things of im a real noob to DSLR filmaking and im filming longboarding. Longboarding consists of really fast movement and i cant find the right settings for capturing this action.

The camera i have is a NIKON D5100.

I have it set to manual and i just want to know:
The perfect shutter speed if im filming a 1920x1080 24fps and when i put it to 1/50 it tends to blur the movement. The right aperture. the right iso and exposure. Im mainly filming through cloudy over cast scenes. And as well sunny.

Steven Spielberg has revealed the Oscar winning blockbuster Lincoln barely made it into distribution.

Spielberg was speaking at the University of South California Film School. The problem he says is that studios aren't taking any chances on 'fringe' subjects and scripts, preferring established franchises and superhero schlock directed by wannabes. If Spielberg can't get his artistic film into cinemas, it bodes very badly for the artistic DNA of cinema and the viability of the business which for so long has fed of ideas and talent. Have the money-men finally killed it?

as i love RAW and LOVE highspeed i thought perhaps its possible to build my own raw dng camera :-)

and its roughly based on that idea :-)
 
but i went with an other camera from PointGrey its an USB 3 Flea 3 cam that can shoot up to 720p120fps.
and build a mini itx board with an intel core i3 3225 :-)
 
still lots of work to be done but at the moment i can write on an ssd 720p120fps at 8bit
and 720p96fps at 12 bit.
 
but i have a problem with my .raw to .dng conversion:
 
on the BMCC raw files there is a tag:
DefaultCropSize and DefaultCropOrigin
 
and i cant get it to work properly with my DNG converter
when i run dng_validate on an converted DNG i get always:
*** Error: Invalid DefaultCropSize ***
 
does anybody has a sample code or another idea?
 
to the some picutres of the MiniRaw1 just serach on twitter and instagram for #MiniRAW1 :-)
only pictures at the moment no footage yet :-)

JVC have launched a "large sensor 4K" camera with Nikon mount.

We saw a prototype of this camera a long time ago, reported here on EOSHD one and half years ago, the form factor and specs of the final model are remarkably similar to the prototype.

Hi all! First timer here!

I am just about to purchase a Japanese GH2 but had some questions....

1. Can I get proper English menu once GH2 patch is applied on the Japanese GH2?
2. Can you upgrade from patched GH2 to official 1.1? (Is it straight forward?)
3. Does it retain the english menu at least if you go from patched GH2 to official 1.1?

The Speed Booster for Micro Four Thirds gives cameras like the Panasonic GH2, GH3 and Blackmagic Cinema Camera a Super 35mm / APS-C sized sensor using clever optics, in the same way that the E-mount version turned cameras like the Sony FS100 and NEX 7 into valid alternatives to full frame.

As well as shrinking the image circle of a full frame lens to fit a smaller sensor, the Speed Booster lives up to its name by giving you a 1 stop increase in brightness so that F2.8 effectively becomes F2.0.

I've been testing the Leica R mount version of the new Micro Four Thirds Speed Booster on the Panasonic GH3 and here are some of my early observations.

Just hoping someone could help me out with a good "picture profile" for color grading on the GH3, be it the best preset one or the best choices for the custom one. I am only just beginning to get into color grading my footage so I'm not sure how far to drop the settings (Sharpness, Contrast etc) in the custom profile..

I had the pleasure of testing the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art (on a Canon 100D...).
Focussed on photography, but the results are amazing. Even at f/1.8 it is really sharp, I'm sure it will even beat many primes. It's pretty crazy actually!

This will be killer on Blackmagic EF-mount camera's (if it will work?), Canon aps-c with raw... MFT with speed booster, if a electronic EOS version ever arrives...

I have no other words to describe it - this is huge news.

Magic Lantern have done the seemingly impossible and given us a continuous raw recording mode on the Canon 5D Mark III. Once activated in the menus the 5D Mark III becomes essentially a full frame Blackmagic Cinema Camera and amazingly mine has not yet exploded. No more short bursts of raw, this is the real thing.

Hi I recently got a Panasonic GH3 it is my first DSLR and I'm not sure how to transfer my footage to final cut pro 7. I shot in 1080 24fps and in .mov mode. i put the dslr card in and imported into fcp but when I play it back it appears choppy. I would greatly appreciate any help, sorry for the newbie question lol.

Been excitedly following all the news of the new Magic Lantern hack and watching videos. I really like what I'm seeing, however most of my attention at first went to all the mark III footage. Now I've discovered some mark II videos and it seems that the image characteristics of those two cameras are very different when shooting RAW video. Mark II now seems more filmic to my eye whereas mark III seems to be better in the technical specs and having much less aliasing problems. The spec sheet is impressive. 4:4:4 colour sampling from 14bit linear raw and 1280 lines of resolution with an anamorphic compliant 4:3 aspect ratio.

This compares to the image quality of the Sony F35 (Superman Returns, Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland) which cost $250,000 just 5 years ago.

So, until i purchased a C100, i'd never known the love i would find in focus peaking. But raw is raw.

I'll be snagging a 5D3 shortly. To my understanding, you can't playback any of the raw video normally just yet in cam? Can you use something like a Ninja 2 to do a pro res backup reference for playback of what you have...? Or will it not let you do it?

It's got peaking, and a lot of other stuff too. I dunno. It references the 4:2:0 clean out crap, not the 14 bit raw stuff.. This is where i see it defeating the purpose.

Looks like there are some dropped frames in the GH2 footage, did use a Sandisk 95MB/s card though...

Everything shot with the same fixed white balance at 1/50s, various apertures but same on both camera's at all times.
 
My first impressions:
The G6 looks better to me. Better shadow detail and a bit more detail in the highlights. Probably due to flatter picture.
 
The G6 shares the picture styles with the GH3, so no smooth like on the GH2.  Kept both camera's on standard to keep it as close as possible. Everything dialed down maximum.
 
Less noise at high iso's, less banding. Couldn't detect any moire.
 
Looks a tad less sharp than (hacked) GH2, but that could be up to the sharpening at -5. With some sharpening probably same detail level.
 
Rolling shutter looks the same to me.
 
Although the G6 is a bit smaller I actually prefer the grip to the GH2. It holds very nicely. The lcd is much much better. The color cast on the GH2 screen is horrible. The G6 looks pretty natural and true to the output. Funny thing: the viewfinder looks quite smaller to me.

I'm selling my GH3. I've only used it about 5 times, so it's practically brand new.
 
It feels like a shame to already sell it considering I had high hopes of getting back into filmmaking but right now I just don't have time or a project in mind. I realized I didn't use it for shooting stills. I'd rather still just shoot a few rolls a year of Tri-X on my Nikon FM when the inspiration hits. And I want to get away from technical obsessions for the moment and focus on reading books and trying to get inspired with ideas for upcoming projects. Any by then, hopefully the BMPCC will (hopefully) be available.

And by compact I mean preferably small enough to pocket .
