Ratguity reacted to Andrew Reid in More information on 10bit 4K 4:2:2 via micro HDMI on the GH4 without external box
    Picture: EOSHD Forum, by Orangenz

Panasonic have confirmed that the GH4 (quite amazingly) outputs 10bit 4K 4:2:2 from the onboard micro HDMI port without the YAGH external HD-SDI unit.

However there are still benefits to using the HD-SDI outputs.

Here I have more details on how this whole thing works and what external recorders might be in the pipeline to offer 4K recording on the GH4...

Having read through many EOSHD forum threads, I've happy to purchase two G6's with Canon FD or Yashica ML lenses (subject to availablity) to film events, interviews and short documentaries.

With regard to editing, my instinct is 15" Macbook Pro + FCP, however, my budget points towards a Windows laptop + Premiere Elements.  Is a i7 quad core laptop overkill?  Would I need additional hard drives and hardware?

I'd welcome your help and suggestions for a good photographer yet novice film-maker.

Ratguity reacted to Jolley in Best DSLR For Property Video?
    Dear forum members,

I'd be very grateful for any advice/opinions any of you could share on my situation below!

We run a small family estate agency in High Lane, England. Our USP / mission statement is to offer class leading photography and video tours of every property we take to market at no extra cost to our vendors, which we believe is quite unique in the UK at our price point.

Our business is currently growing rapidly so we are now in a fortunate position where I can justify investing in some higher end photography equipment in order to keep improving our service. I currently shoot all photos and video with my trusty Nikon D5100 combined with a 35mm DX prime lens for detail/arty shots and sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens for the majority of shots. As I spend in the region of five hours on site per property, and a further day editing all the photos and video for each property, I'd like to think I was using the best equipment to match the time and effort involved (even if my skill levels are in question!).

As a perfectionist, I'm frequently disappointed by the quality of video achieved (even if it is fairly decent considering the cost of the equipment). Clearly it's some way short of the claimed 1080p resolution of a professional production. Another key  issue for me is the level of noise introduced to the picture (houses tend to be quite dark spaces inside with high contrast areas from the windows too, I feel my forced high ISO settings without additional lighting or HDR options can't be helped at times).

So as I'm taking photos as well as video, I'm assuming my best route is to search for the best DSLR for video. I also need to consider which cameras offer the best lenses for my requirements, namely a pin sharp wide angle lens which works well in low light? (Nikon FX 14-24mm f2.8 seems to get rave reviews)!?

I've been looking at a few cameras like Nikon D610 / D800/E, Canon 6D / 5D Mark III. Am I on the right track? Would you have any suggestions for camera/lens combinations? It seems I suppose there's also some sense in visiting a local store to see which one would suit me best? Ultimately, I'm primarily looking for a noticeable step up in video performance from my existing setup, whilst continuing to learn and improve my photography.

If you're interested you can see a sample of my work (photos & video etc.) at the link below:

Ratguity reacted to Andrew Reid in Sony AX100 4K video camera - how much rolling shutter is too much?
The Sony AX100 takes the relatively large 1" sensor from the RX10 and puts it in camcorder form factor with built in ND filter. However it appears that in reading out all the pixels on a 20MP sensor, Sony have created a skew-monster in rolling shutter teams. What's remarkable about this video is that the panning and trains aren't even moving very fast. This is some of the worst rolling shutter I've yet to see on any camera available on the market.

Pros are wondering what the benefit of 4K is to them in terms of overall image quality, when mastered and delivered for 2K / 1080p. A lot of work is still shot in 1080p and cameras like the Canon C300 are the workhorses of the moment.

In the case of the GH4 it may appear from the specs that it's just an 8bit 4:2:0 camera internally.

Actually the theory is 8bit 4:2:0 4K material from this camera can be taken through a workflow in post that converts it to 10bit 4:4:4 1080p - with all the smoother tonality, better colour and workflow advantages that format brings. This is a big leap for 1080p based on the much more expensive C300 which only does 8bit 4:2:2.

I asked Go Pro's David Newman (Sr. Dir. Software) whether this theory was correct...

Ratguity reacted to Andrew Reid in The EOSHD Music Challenge
I would like to give my platform to up and coming musicians around the world to showcase their music through my cinematography to an audience of around 250,000 people per month. This is the EOSHD Music Challenge.
Readers act as DJ - they can pick music from up and coming singers and bands, with suggestions that might suit the mood of my cinematography and future camera tests.
Cinematic music is really important to me but I haven't been satisfied with The Music Bed or similar resources so far.
    How does the challenge work?
    1. Suggest a band or musician on this thread. They have to be up and coming not signed to a major label or already huge.
    2. I investigate and do the contacting of those which I like and credit you for the find!
    3. If they agree to let me use their music, they will find a new audience through my blog and hopefully sell some tracks on iTunes from a link on EOSHD. You will be designated as the discoverer of talent and winner of the challenge.
    4. You can have fun with this challenge and play DJ - use your taste to select the right standard of music to fit EOSHD and in turn you might discover new music yourself which you really enjoy listening to.
    5. My cinematography at EOSHD is purely an artistic endeavour and experimental, non commercial and does not make any money but for all videos featuring unsigned acts I will consider enabling the Vimeo Tip Jar and sharing the proceeds with the musician 50:50!
This is a new idea and it will start off as a trial. If it works then great! If not then we will swap things around until it does, because I am determined to find new music and up and coming artists.
Good soundtracks are really important for filmmakers and I believe in finding new talent. Perhaps you know some artists yourself? Perhaps you are one?

    Hello,

i wil buy a camera next month. I like the 5d since i am also a photographer. To be honest i am getting a bit dizzy with all the raw workflows. I am using the latest version of Adobe Premierre. I would not mind having to go trough 1 conversion proces before an edit. But in the edit i like to have a workable file which i can use for speed changes, color correction, blend modes, etc. Once i am in the edit room i like to concentrate on the edit proces.

Is there an easy proces with the raw video like converting it to a prores file?
Can Premierre edit the raw files natively?
If it works natively how does it work, sludgy or fast enough?
Converting from raw to DNG and edit the DNG in premierre, a good option or outdated workflow?

Or should i seriously consider a GH4 if i like a simple work flow?

A use a mac pro, will upgrade this year to a new macpro.

Thanks for all the help, i need to get some advise.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH2 16.0 MP Digital Camera  Black + Driftwood Quantum 9b hack + plus San Disk Extreme Pro 64gb 95m/bs SD card

Hacked Panasonic GH2 Nick Driftwood Quantum 9B update hack plus San Disk Extreme Pro 64gb 95m/bs SD card
18 months old superb camera the best non RAW camera on the market.

This camera now produces Hollywood Quality movie footage:

I have added the classic Nick Driftwood Quantum 9b updated firmwear hack to the camera.
This now produes a stunning 150-170mb/s image , stunning detail and colour rendition.
This is the hack that was used on the famous Zaccuto Camera shoot out when Hollywood Movie Director Francis Ford Capolla
picked the Panasonic GH2 with  the Quantum 9b hack as his favourite over all the cameras including Sony F65 and Red Epic etc.

The camera comes with the original box and all the goodies that come with it
    Original Panasonic OEM battery
    battery charger
    charger lead
    Panasonic GH2 strap
    and all the cables plus
instruction manual and cd discs that come with it

ITS ALSO COMES WITH SAN SANDISK EXTREME PRO 64GB 95 MB/S SD CARD.
This is the card Nick Driftwood designed his hack to work with, its gives you 55 minuites of recording time at full 150-170 mb/s rate.

The hack will only work with this card as it is a very fast read and write speed card, so I am including this card so you can use the camera
straight out the box without having to find the correct card to use with this hacked GH2.

The firmwear hack is very stable and Ive not had any issues with it.
Hacked cameras can sometimes lock up under certain conditions, so Nick Driftwood recomcnds if this happens is turn the camera off and pull the battery out and
then replace the battery and turn the camera back on , this resets eveything and you are good to go again.

The rear screen does have a couple of scratches on it in the middle , this does not effect the image when the screen is on you cant see it as the screen is bright.
The camera is 18 months old and is in good used condition, see pictures close up ,  all fully functioning and ready right out the box to shoot your next project, just add a lens and off you go.

This is a PAL camera it shoots 24p and 25p hacked AVCHD

    - Third party batteries banned for use in D5200 and others
    - Absolutely no mention in the change log for firmware update

I think that's an absolute disgrace not to mention it in the change log for the firmware update.

Imagine if you had an important shoot coming and then suddenly none of your batteries worked any more.

Again this will upset more customers and turn away more customers from Nikon than it will gain them in profit from genuine battery sales.

And I am sure they will say they did it for safety related reasons, so I must somehow be missing all those horror stories of third party batteries damaging cameras or setting fire to kittens. Bad bad third party batteries.
