The GoPro has a fisheye lens. Resolution is only one part of the image, in same way that size is only one part of architecture. How can you possibly compare?

Took my friend Susanna to a very spooky abandoned sanatorium in Berlin last weekend. Here are the results -

The Jupiter 9 also works very well with anamorphic. Not very sharp wide open but the look is great at F5.6. It has interesting bokeh going on. This is a cheap lens - I paid around 100 euros for it.

I wouldn't write off this camera just yet, there's a chance moire has been fixed and the card controller is faster than previous ones, those two things alone could make this a hell of a great s35 sized sensor camera, which to me is still preferable to full frame for video work.

Zach reacted to metaphiston in 'Light' - macro film shot on 600D
This is my short film 'Light' I've been making over the last month using a Canon 600d with Pentax lenses.

    http://vimeo.com/69428988

It's a short (90 second) simple story about a lighthouse getting through the night, and features lots of experiments in cinematography - all done on my kitchen table with reversed and macro lenses and a lot of ice!

We used a Canon 600D (with Pentax adapter for my lenses) for the film itself as the manual control on this camera, the full HD digital zoom ability and swivel screen made it very useful for those tiny close ups! The film is all shot "live" in 25 frames per second, it's not animated.

We used a Pentax-A 50mm f1.2 and a Sigma 24mm superwide II f2.8 mounted in reverse for super-close ups, and a Pentax-A 100mm f4 macro for the widest shots - none of which had an area bigger than, say, a post-it note - and some of the extreme close ups were over an area the size of a fingernail or smaller at around 2:1 to 4:1 scale. For the reversed lenses we used a Canon to Pentax adapter, then a Pentax reversing ring (52mm filter thread for both lenses), then the lens! Note, if you want to use a lens in reverse for close ups you need to use one with an aperture ring, which means most modern digital lenses won't give you any aperture control.

We needed a lot of light for shooting down to f16 at 1/50 at ISO 160 in extreme macro where you get several more stops of light falloff, and so we had a big hot 800W light. For some shots it was around a foot (30 cm) from the ice, causing severe melting problems! So we needed to be fast and accurate with focus to a millimetre level on a disintegrating, slippery set all of which was too small to position without completely ruining composition! Most of the time it was a fun challenge but was occasionally frustrating!

The ice variety was achieved by chipping it in different ways, letting it melt for different times, freezing larger volumes of water (mug sized) and smashing the ice with a hammer to get particularly clear stuff, or ice cube size to get the cloudier stuff. Some of it had a small amount of blue food colouring too.

We edited in Premiere Pro CS6 and After Effects CS6, where we added the lighthouse light and did a little colour correction.

The film was made for the Depict short film competition in the UK. I hope you like the film, happy to explain any techniques and looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

What Panasonic (+hacks) gives the low-end shooter in resolution they take away in color. You will need some sort of LUT-based correction, but if all you've got is 8-bit 420 to work within it's going to be rough. The Panasonics don't offer Log gammas either iirc, and you might get in-camera sharpening/NR artifacts showing up too with too extreme a push.

The easiest and cheapest thing to do might be buying a 2nd hand Rebel T2i. You'll also get better DoF and low-light thrown in the package, and you can run Cinestyle on it for better DR. For all the complaining about Canon (some justified) the color is the best in the biz objectively and subjectively.

I normally don't get upset over these kinds of things but the lack of 24p in my RX100 really peeves me. I feel like it should easily be offered as a free firmware update. Certainly shouldn't have to pay $100 difference for it.

Wonderfully weird work BUT I'd like to just say that this is in no way the first short film to use 5D3 RAW.  Electric Igloo shot a feature over memorial day weekend that is now in post and we wrapped this short on June 16th which is also now in post.

I would agree with you that art does not have to "say" anything, but it should at least be moving in some way. Otherwise it just becomes another boring excuse for a "professionally shot" "test" video. And to get back to my point, Raw doth not (necessarily)  maketh art.

If you can wait, I'd suggest the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera $1000) with the Panasonic Lumix 100-300mm lens (goes for around $500). If not, the $1,300 GH3 gives you weather sealing and 60 frames at 1080P (for slow motion; no other DSLRs that I know of offer this). Here is a sample that I found with that very combination:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlCCaI-ee1g

    So:

    Panasonic GH3: $1300
    Extra Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery: $80
    Sandisk Extreme 64GB 95MB/s SD Card: $120
    Lumix G Vario 100-300mm F/4-5.6 OIS Lens: $500

    TOTAL: $2,000

Replace that with a GH2, and you can shave $600 off of that price. You'll lose 1080P slow motion (you'll only get 720P) and the weather sealing, but you won't have to worry about moire patterns as you do sometimes with the GH3.

Indeed, it's really "horses for courses". If you want wide, sharp slow motion with deep depth of field, the RX100 is the best for budget.

If you want cinematic portraits for narrative film-making with shallow depth-of field, then the 600D can nail it.

You can knock a lot of junk out of the image by getting closer to your subject and using a wider aperture so that less in focus. At that distance at 5.6 everything is going to be in focus, which the 600d doesn't do well. I think better composition is a huge part of what you're missing.

You only posted 2 very short clips so its hard to judge by that, but thats really what comes to mind when watching them.
