1. I fell, that, maybe, the reason, that the Video on Youtube, and subsequently, on Vimeo, was uploaded on 720p, was done, for a reason. Maybe, like a build-up, to the real thing. I would wait for 1080p version to come out, and, then, perhaps, make a judgment, on the video quality.
2.
When you sign a contract with Sony to use their sensor, you bet your ass it does (mean something). The contract will stipulate exactly how that sensor can be used.
Dude, your assumption has no edifice. Solid or otherwise.
3. I am also glad, that they shot a portion of their promo, in India (around Old Delhi side, I am guessing, since I haven't been to the downmarket areas, myself, but, which facinate all foreigners ... ;-) :P ). Not many people had heard of the GH2, in India, and considering, that, India makes more films than any other country (in terms of numbers), it would be a great idea, to try and capture, the Indie Filmmaking market, in countries like India, Korea, Japan, Russia etc.
4.
If it is a Sony sensor, then we can kiss the good detail of the gh2 goodbye. I don't think Sony would let the Pany outdo their a99.
It doesn't mean anything. The sensor is just 25-30% of the deciding factor. for the image and video output of a camera. The Nikon D600 and the Sony A99 have the same (Sony) sensor, and, I am guessing, the Nikon produces better image quality, among the two. Also, Sony produces sensors at all prices, so, lets not jump the gun, here.

How could Vitaliy, Driftwood, manage to get so much more out of it if this were not the case. Working on the assumption it was deliberatley crippled you have to ask what has changed and then have a close look at why the GH3 does what it does. Effectively it trumps the GH2 hacks and may actually stop hacking Next it allows the four thirds lenses to carry on in case people might think panny have deserted it. I'm sure they will desert four thirds next time round though. The GH3 is it an answer to the BMC or to the slew of new cameras coming out now or are they all trying to squeeze Black magic out and recapture what they are losing along with all their mates. Because what they stand to lose is the ability to drip feed cameras with slight improvements. Segment the pro from the consumer and maximise money by small upgrades year on year. Simply because its got so bad (The crippling) That Black Magic can take off the shelf parts and make a camera that has pro res in built and RAW Throw in software worth about a £1000 and sell the whole lot for £2100. NOW forgive me for being cynical on the way we have been treated and are being goat herded into our pens again. I would think different if the new cams just simply had 4.2.2 10 bit out and decent sensors NOT crippled with bad processing. Come on this has gone on long enough and beyond a joke. I am annoyed with camera manufacturers and the way they have done business I applaud Black Magic and want to support their ethos I dont want to see certain maunfacturers herd us all back into our compounds with glossy sales campaigns and guru speel in order to do it. There is no reason why camera manufacturers cant output 10 bit in fact they have to take steps to prevent it from doing so. " Though I think, the hacks were nice, they weren't anywhere 'extraordinary'. The codec was still 4-2-0. The only, possible effect, of the code, was in grading, where the much higher bit rate, helped the video (possibly), from falling apart. Also, the latest 4-4-4 Patch on the GH2 is exaggerated, again. It is Nowhere near 12 bit 4-4-4. As a matter of fact, the FlowMotion V2.02 Hack seemed better (IMO), that the Apocalypse 4-4-4. Also, the BMCC and the GH3 are 2 completely different cameras, meant, for 2 completely different users. Till the exact quality of the video, coming out of the GH3 is not tested, in actual tests (as opposed to videos put out by professional DoPs and guys like those who apparently made the Nikon D600 video), it would be pre-mature, to compare it, to anything else around. The only difference, I noticed, on the GH3, as compared to the GH2, is that, perhaps, those banding issues have been greatly improved (especially w.r.d. to the Sky).
6. That SAME youtube video, is on Vimeo, in (much smaller) parts. That's the same video. Maybe, this has some portions, in the snow, which did not feature in the youtube one, but, its the same video. The built-in programming, for time-lapse, in a very well-conceived idea.
7. Nice video quality, and pretty Flat profile. Though, the Banding, is probably 3-4 times as bad, as on the GH2.
8.
That's funny, you wish you had all these professional audio connections but then you'd pass on the ability to actually adjust audio levels while shooting? Hope you were being ironic...
I would blast anyone, who fidgets with the camera, WHILE shooting. On second thoughts, the button is gr8, cause it has dedicated controls, for video, and hence faster, n less cumbersome. But, Audio, like everything else, should ONLY be fidgeted with, after a shot. Not during.
9. I hope the GH3 gives users the features, the Sony A99 has, for sound. I got his from Imagine Resource: "And then there's the A99's audio feature set. As well as a built-in stereo mic, there's a 3.5mm stereo mic jack. You can also adjust the audio record level, and to assist you in doing so, you can connect headphones via a 3.5mm stereo output jack for levels monitoring. There's also an audio levels display function. An optional XLR-K1M kit mounts on the Multi Interface Shoe, and adds two balanced XLR connections with mic / line input selection and separate level adjustments, a unique capability in the SLR world. (A Sony ECM-XM1 mono shotgun mic is included in the kit.)". http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-a99/sony-a99A.HTM There is also a multi-control dial, in the front, for silent handling, and changing settings while shooting. I don't think its of any gr8 consequence, so it can be passed ... ;-)
10. I think the Price is a put-off, among a few other things. Most people would rather buy the Nikon D800, if they can afford this.
11. Well, lets just say, that the MFT is at a strange stage, in its life. It is Definitely an improvement on the whole SLR bit, where the vibration and noise, downscaling of image for video and not to mention the movement of the mirror, poses some serious limitations. At the same time, due to many reasons (including floods, the economic slump, competition with higher segment cameras manufactured by Sony and Panasonic, the multi-million dollar scam(s) @ Olympus, no agreement between standards in the MFT and FT manufacturers i.e. Olympus and Panasonic etc), the MFT movement, has been slowed down, strangely, and inconsistently. Having said that, the MFT/ mirrorless camera, is the future of camera technology, especially, considering, that, it can overcome many restrictions (including shutter speed, noise, vibrations, etc etc). The fact is, obviously, that these haven't been explored too much by the Mirrorless camera manufacturers. Also, sensor technology and codec, has to really develop, and right now, the whole bayer pattern codec thing, has to improve. It is a 70s thing, and it has a lot of scope, for improvement (like the 4 colours that Kodak and Sony, recently, introduced in its Viewfinders, to make them brighter). Also, sensor technology really has to improve too, and Sony and Panasonic, and on the right path, especially, with the back-illuminated sensors (Sony has started making many versions of these). Panasonic, right now is struggling to position technology, both hardware and software, between the consumer, pro-sumer and very-highend consumer levels. Once it decides on that, and once it and Sony decide on the perfect codec, the mirrorless movement will gain full throttle. The GH2 and other MFT cameras feel plastiky, because they are meant to (they weren't meant to be weather sealed). That is something Panasonic is, rumoured to have worked on, for the GH3. Photokina, should, hopefully, put a lot of things, to rest.
12. I think Philip (Bloom) just gave Nigelbb a mild heart attack (or a severe one) ... :P Philip, I felt, that even though, your review of the BMCC was technically interesting, it was a little unfair. I feel, it has helped break the slow pace, of unimaginative camera building, and the slow pace of technological developments, that have been cause by the cartel effect of the big camera makers (Canon, Sony, Arri etc). Even though the BMCC is an over-weight, non-weather sealed, behemoth, and the tranfer methods, data size and speed will be a serious headache (apart from the fixed battery), it still is a very worthy effort, especially considering the price, the image quality, and that, BMCC is one of the last people at the HD party. Its next camera, when it comes, will consider all the feedback (obviously including yours), but, for now, this IS a worthy competitor, to everyone around. Barring none.
13. The new Panasonic SuperZoom, the FZ 200, shares the new Venus Engine 7 FHD processor (with the expected GH3). Its autofocus is insanely fast, and the colour in video, is pretty interesting, as well. The zoom is an engineering masterpiece. Check this video: http://vimeo.com/48661856 There is another interesting video.Pls watch this one atleast, at 720p. It's pretty good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV4L-8N2CQ4&feature=BFa&list=PL8C928A2019029F28 I think, the GH3, will be Good in Low Light (though, maybe, not as good as the Mark III), and extremely fast autofocus (maybe, they'll make the post of the Focus Puller, redundant, soon ... :P). Also, picture profile will be Much Flatter. I wish they had a good backlit sensor. It would have been great for low light (maybe even dynamic range) Its too late, though, to think of all that ... Though, I expect Still Picture Quality, to still, be pretty lousy.

4k what????

Just when the 4k race was heating up, Panasonic's latest 145 inch 8K PDP (Plasma Display Panel), has suddenly made 4k seem old and redundant. Also, NHK intends on broadcasting at UHDTV (8k), 2020 onwards. hmmm ... http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-uhdtv-8k-4k-201208292152.htm
15. Try the Slik 700. Its a heavy, and sturdy tripod, for about $100. Its a little difficult to get, but, I believe its a gr8 tripod.
16.
But, man, learn your place.
And, where is "Your" Place, Your Exalted Infinitely Divine One ?????????
17. Well, I guess there is No Possible Way, to have the same setting for all the cameras, and say, that, one performs better than the other. The thought, itself, is ludicrous. Also, the same applies, for lighting. For many different reasons. Some cameras have greener (or yellow) shades (hues), and others red. Also, for the same ISO setting, different cameras will show different levels of brightness. Apart from this, the GH2 has a very peculiar characteristic. Very often, you have to switch it on at Higher ISOs and Gradually, lower it to the required ISO, or avoid certain ISO jumps, from certain ISO settings. otherwise it cause noise and some peculiar version of banding. Its some kindda ISO Bug, which is very obvious, sometimes, and not so obvious, at other moments. http://www.personal-...please-look./p1 Tests can never be based on the same conditions. Lighting, or otherwise. If that were the case, all the cameras should have shot the Same video, in the same Format, at the Same Bit Rate, at the same ISO, using exactly the same lenses. Among everything else being constant. Also, people stating that setting up the GH2 takes long, and is a tedious process, are obviously into the whole studio paraphernalia, where there carry huge Rails, and large Tripods, with huge screens to check everything, and lotsa equipment, and make the humble GH2 look like a bazooka, good enough to bring down an entire city. They obviously have no idea about Indie Film shooting, or using modern day DSLRs, the way they are meant to be. Having said this, I guess, its every filmmakers duty (whether a DoP, Director or Gaffer), to ensure, that every camera, is allowed to bring out the best results, keeping the Production Limitations in Mind. Imagine using these monstrous sized extras on a GH2, to shoot a film like the Primer or some other Microbudget Indie. It would draw so much unnecessary attention towards itself, apart from the headache of extra crew, extra equipment etc etc. I guess, taking resolutions to 4k and 5k and 6k, is making film-making more of a technological spoof, and less of film-making. Maybe, much like the 48fps, that Peter Jackson came up with. And, Ironically, its the same people who whine about Panasonic and other new age (Miroorless) lenses being too sharp. That, they don't look dreamy and soft enough. P.S.: Btw, Please Ignore any, ahem, 'evil thoughts' about the pernicious little weasel (jill, actually). Its her mating season.
18. Well, after Publishing (web-casting, actually), the 1st 2 Parts of the Zacuto shootout, Zacuto was issued stern warnings, that all the big camera makes (Arri, Sony, Canon etc), would boycott them, and prevent them from manufacturing accessories for their (high end) products. To save face (and profits), Zacuto does a volte face, and comes up with a Ridiculous Balance Sheet for each camera, and also, similar condition shooting. Whereas the 1st Two Parts should to be viewed as Empirical Studies conducted, and the 3rd part should be viewed as jokes, to lighten up the mood. P.S. I am guessing Francis Ford Capolla will be retiring from Hollywood and Filmmaking. Very Soon.

OT: Steadicam?
Yeah, I agree. It's a gray area to be sure. You know though, the same might be true the other way around too. A local supplier finds some cheap equipment from china (or even gets a license to sell it in the US), slaps a new label on it and jacks up the price. We might not even know any better. Actually, this has happened to me now that I think about it. Many years ago I was going to buy a Dell laptop until I discovered that Dell was only licensing that particular model from an Asian company called Scepter and sticking their label on it. So I just bought one from the original company and saved about $500. This place has them for even cheaper: www.aliexpress.com $1144 + $189.47 for shipping still come out to be $1,333.47 so that's still a super low price to pay for all that. Plus, it comes with it's own foam packed flight case, and mounting stand. BTW, I ran into this old amazingly informative Steadicam video. I think it's something that came with the system to teach new owners how to setup and operate one. It even covers advanced topics like how to achieve certain moves and proper posture and all sorts of stuff. Man, those guys are huffing all the way through it while lugging around a huge Betacam.
I agree with u. India has a Huge proliferation of chinese goods, since the borders aren't secured well. But, some of them, are pretty cheap and interesting. I am usually only vary, with Higher End Chinese stuff. Since, I can usually just get rid of the cheaper stuff, if it doesn't work.

OT: Steadicam?

I was checking products of "http://www.szlaing.com/", and I realised, that, their prices are similar to Glidecam, which, they have obviously ripped off. Maybe, they were the manufacturers for them. I guess, all US manufacturers (as well as manufacturers from other countries), who outsource their production to China, have to suffer the inevitable ignominy of having their products duplicated in China, and attempted to be sold worldwide. Also, since the original product is manufactured in China, no real judgment on quality, can really be made. Btw, shipping is pretty expensive on this one.
21. The FS100 shoots at 24Mbps. I don't think its the bitrate, as much as the kind of compression, and the codec for lower end cameras, which, somehow removes details, for same size sensors. Though, for the GH2, people have been able to get over the problem, and will be able to do so, for almost all cameras (presumably), by increasing the bitrate and tweaking a little bit of the settings, i am sure, there must be some way to keep the bitrate low, and still maintain enormous details and DR.

GH3

Hahaha ... So true. With this kind of card, he is sure to have everything. Also, if the camera is even 50% as well weather-sealed as the Card, then, one can safely let it fall to the bottom of the ocean, and not worry about losing anything.

GH3

Chrad, read the link. You'll understand why i said "seriously weather-sealing".
24. I would not have believed this, till i saw it. For everyone wondering what the whole fuss about over-priced, too soft, fast primes was, this may be the answer you were looking for. Apparently, Mitakon has been manufacturing the lenses for SLR Magic, and that is perhaps, where they got the precise know-how from. SLR Magic produces the 50mm f.95 (actually T.95), which is Much Sharper than the Voigtlander 25mm f.95. The only issues it had, during tests, was the strong purple fringing (chromatic aberration). Otherwise, it was almost as sharp as the Leica, at a fraction of the cost. While the SLR Magic retails for US$ 1100, for the 50mm f.95, the Mitakon 35mm f.95 retails for around 600 Euros (approx 736 US$). http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/first-mitakon-35mm-f0-95-image-samples-not-bad/ http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3951/35mm-f0.95-mitakon/p1 Maybe its time, that Lens Manufacturers Stop outsourcing to China, and, more importantly, start reducing their unjustified pricing.

GH3

Panasonic are seriously weather-sealing their cameras. In every way possible. Now whether he GH3 is the beneficiary of such kind of weather-sealing, or some later model, that, will soon be seen. Check this: http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/09/panasonic-preps-sd-cards-that-survive-heat-water-and-x-rays/
