1. Thanks. I too prefer the portability of MBP. I just wonder if the RAW DNG files would work on it for editing and coloring even if rendering takes longer. If it doesn't I would've spent a lot of money for nothing.
2. Hi, I have a deal to get macbook pro with retina display, and I m wondering if the 2.6 version with 16 G or RAM would be enough for the BMC postproduction with RAW DNG files - for editing on Premiere and color correction on new Resolve, or do I have to wait for the new iMac 3.6 i7 with 32 G or RAM (iMac also has option for a much better graphic card)? Also is Cuda working on either of these machines? Thanks a lot for your insights.
3. What do you think of direct comparison of lenses: Samyang 24mm f1.4 VS Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 - difference in money is not so great - about $130. One is full frame the other is faster, but how does that translate in real life shooting? Which one should I go for? Thanks.
4. Hi, I m trying to set up the best lens kit for the price for the BMC camera. I need your opinion on what's better: OPTION 1: Samyang 8mm f3.5 (video version) Samyang 24mm f1.4 (video version) Samyang 35mm f1.4 (video version) Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 Price: approximately $2400 These are all full frame lenses (except for the last one), so they have future value and since all are EF, I would opt for EF mount BMC OPTION 2: Samyang 8mm f3.5 (video version) Samyang 35mm f1.4 (video version) Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm f0.95 Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f0.95 Noktor SLR Magic 12mm f1.6 Price: approximately $3690 This option has 3 m4/3 lenses (not as future proof as full frame lenses), but way faster wides. I would have to go for BMC with m4/3 mount. Also this option is considerably more expensive - arround $1300, for my tight budget. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
5. What do you think about this lens adapter: http://www.amazon.com/Kipon-EOS-m4-Adapter-Aperture-Control/dp/B004XGFIZY It is EOS to m4/3 adapter with aperture ring, and it is not terribly expensive either... Thanks for the previous posts, I apreciate it!
6. I have one question that has been creeping out since the announcement of the m4/s mount. Originaly I have planned to use my set of Samyang lenses (8, 24, 35) and Tokina 11-16, all EF mount as the main lenses for the BMC. Now with the announcment of m4/3 all world of lenses that I have used on GH2 opens up, including my absolute favorite LOMO OCT 18 mount russian lenses, however my dilemma is, if I opt to get m4/3 camera would I see any difference on my EF lenses (as opposed to going with the original mount for BMC) as well as how to change the aperture on my Tokina (as that would have to still be my main lens for BMC)? Would it be better to just go for ZE/EF or for m4/3 in my situation? Thanks a lot!
7. Thanks for your replay! BTW Do you think that Tokina 11-16, Samyang 35mm and Contax 85mm 1.4 would be enough as a starter lens kit for BMC. Down the road I know I would need 50mm 1.4 (Probably Canon EF); 20mm (Probably Canon again), and possibly something wider than Tokina, but I still don't know what exactly (I was thinking about sigma 4.5, but if it distorts the image too much, that that's probably not the best idea)? Again thanks for your effort to replay.
8. I was also thinking about Sigma 4.5mm 2.8... Tokina is a necessity for BMC. I m also debating about Sigma 30mm 1.4 VS Samyang 35mm 1.4
9. Thanks Andrew for your replay. I'll have too look closely into this new worlflow for BMC. I m used to rditing footage than coloring, Would I hvae to change this with BMC - color the footage in DaVinci than transcode and edit in Premiere?
10. Thanx a lot for your post. What about Sigma 30mm 1.4 vs Samyang 35mm 1.4 (If I m not mistaken Sigma is APS-C and Samyang is FF)? Also how would Sigma 4.5mm 2.8 look on BMC camera? It is extreme wide on APS-C, but it could be perfect Wide lens for BMC... Any thoughts? Thanks.
11. Hi, I want to buy new 50mm fast prime. I will be using the lens on my gh2 and on BlackMagic cinema camera for now. I m debating between the these two: 1. Customized pro full-frame film lens cinematics Pentax PHN50/1.7 PK - for $500 2. Canon EF 50mm f1.4 - for $400 Would anybody have any suggestion on which lens should I buy. Thank you very much for your insights and your time. Cheers!
12. Hi, I m about to purchase new Mac Book Pro with Retina Display i7 Quad Core 2.6 with 16GB RAM, but only with 256 SSD. This computer is already way above my budget, but as I m planning to buy BMC camera, I need something fast to edit RAW footage. My question is would this computer with Thunderbolt External HD (my internal SSD would be to small) be enough for editing RAW dng footage (if not completely smooth, than at least bearable editing)? Thank you very much. P.S. I have been editing mostly on FCP 7, and I know that I need to make transition to Premiere C6 in order to edit RAW footage.
13. Thanks Andrew. I heard that new chinese raw cinema camera will have an adaptor for OCT 18 lenses, so that's exciting. At the moment I do not have $8,000 (estimated price), but until the time camera comes out I might be able to scrap something somehow...
14. Thanks a lot guys for your insights. What about using my LOMO OCT 18 and Carl Zeiss lenses on BM? Would that be possible?
15. Hi all, First of all thanks for taking your time to read my post. Here is my situation I have hacked GH2 that I use for shooting short narrative films and I also intended to shoot a feature on it. Now with the appearance of the Black Magic Cinema camera I m considering selling my GH2 and buying the BM camera, however I really love what I get from my liitle GH2. Now first question is would this be a smart decission, or should I keep shooting on my GH2. In case that my finances improve drastically I m considering buying a BM camera without selling my GH2, which leads to my second question - would I be ablr to shoot with these 2 cameras a serious narrative film in a 2 camera set-up situation? If yes, than that is something to seriously think about. And my last question is would I be able to use my LOMO OKC 18 lenses and my Carl Zeiss 85mm 1.4 on BM camera, and if yes what kind of adapter would I need? I simply love these lenses and practically shoot 99% of my stuff with them (I still need to save up for 14 mm and 35mm Semyang as I m having problems with focus pulling on some shots with my LOMO's). Anyway, thanks a lot on your responses. I m looking forward to hear some suggestions. Cheers!
16.
Interesting... I didn't think that there would be a contest between this and the GH2. 1080 60p is also a very enticing feature. Very excited now about the outcome of this review, actually in a strange way hope that the NEX 7 can come out on top.
I really, really hope that your predictions do not come true. I have just bought a new GH2 camera, and I would feel pretty dumb if I didn't wait another couple of weeks for a better NEX 7  >:( , so I sincerely hope that GH2 will ultimately kick NEX 7's ass  ;D  ;D
17. Hi, I managed to find Contaz Zeiss 85mm f1.4 lens for about 700$ (in decent condition) and I also got Jupiter 9 85mm f2. Is it a huge difference between these two lenses, and should I go on to buy the Contax lens, already having Jupiter one? Another question is about mount adapter for this lens and GH2 camera. It says that it's "AE mount for RTS camera bodies", so do I get Contax Y mount adapter as is suggested in Andrew's GH2 shooter's guide, and do you have suggestions for the good one? Thank you very much for your responses...
18. Thanks a lot on your replays. I will look into these lenses. Will give you my feedback when I get a chance (get the lenses that is :) ) One very newbie question, so please don't laugh. I got SanDisk Extreme Pro SD card but I saw after I bought it that it records up to 45 mb/s and not 90 as I thought. Would I still be able to use it for high mb/s hack pathes like the Driftwood one or Andrew's "roadrunner" and "intra-esting" ones. I spend over 200$ for this SD and the shop doesn't let me return it (grrrr). Sorry for the off-topic...
19. Thanks a lot Andrew. Can you suggest any cinematic wide full-frame lens of 20 mm and possibly wider. These are very difficult to find. I know it is not the best option but I am mostly inclined towards Samyang 14mm f 2.8
20. Hi, I would like to ask someone who is experienced with shooting with these Russian Lenses. For which set of lenses should I go for in order to get a more "filmic" look: LOMO 50mm and 75mm OR Helios 56mm and Jupiter 85mm they are all f 2. I m aware that LOMO lenses are problematic with focusing, hence I wouldn't be able to use follow focus, but I would like to know which are better in order to get that "film look". Thanks a lot for your responses.
21. I found the semyang glasses for a decent price. I will get the 35mm f1.4 as suggested, but I m also interested in getting 85 mm f1.4 and 14 mm f2.8. Any advices about these other two lenses? Thanks.
22. I just got my new GH2 and I m ecstatic. I got Andrew's guide too, so now there is lot to learn and to get use to this little buddy. I followed Andrew's advices about lenses and got some of his suggested glasses (some are very difficult to get, so it will take a while). Now I have to get adapters canon and nikon to m 4/3. I found this one for canon lenses: BOWER EOS TO M4/3 W/APERTURE and this one for both: FOTODIOX MOUNT ADAPTER. Now my question is does anybody have any experiences with these adapters? The first one has the aperture ring on it (for the canon lenses), but would that really work well with the glass or is it better idea to go with the one without the aperture ring and just stay away from the canon lenses? Thanks for the suggestions.
