I doubt Canon was so stupid to limit the resolution via software though

I fear you over-estimate the intelligence of the-powers-that-be at Canon.  Amazing engineers, but it is run like most big Japanese companies - by an elite group of old men stuck in the past and completely out of touch with reality.

Anyway, back to the subject of this article - Magic Lantern.  Fantastic news!  I think we all know the firmware is the main limiting factor in the 5D III's performance.  I haven't ordered yet and have been a vocal critic on these forums, but if it can be hacked to give a higher bitrate, I'm ready to buy.

Well of course they did ! I meant in a way that can be changed via firmware hack!

People like to hang to those packaged theories about Japan as a static traditional society, it reassure them.

Well. I would say that by having direct knowledge of Sony's corporate culture they are not far away to the reality. But... this to me applies to Sony and the error here is judging an entire society as a whole. Look at Toyota and you find huge investments on Hybrid cars that are going to get disruptive soon.

On the other side of the ocean the US car industry has been quiet an example of "Stuck on incremental, not disruptive innovation" and in the same time totally loosing the product quality and US is supposed to be a much more dynamic society... We could talk about Motorola, HP, Kodak, IBM etc...  In Europe there so many examples including Nokia etc...

So... to me Canon is really treating the lower part of the digital film market in very conservative way as did Sony and I bet that they will be obliged to react to avoid loosing a lot of customers like me and many on this forum

    100% agree with you
  3. So Canon thinks it's better to release things "no one" could afford with stupid things missing (like articulating screen) instead of a great $800 650D wtih GH2-like 1080p that will destroy every single product from competitors and sell millions?

I'll never understand how economy works ;D

    so the resolution sucks?
No it certainly doesn't. No anti-aliasing filter means the sensor and lens deliver optimal sharpness. Although it is 16MP to 24MP on the NEX 7 it keeps the low light advantage of a lower megapixel count with some of the resolution advantages of higher pixel count. See Nikon D800E for further example.

Sorry I was talking about the video part

Hmm, there's a 1080p version of Mario & Nette on YouTube. The beginning shots look a bit fuzzy, but I think they must have been shot at 720p because the rest is absolutely stunning! The softness isn't noticeable at all - it looks wonderful.

There's no doubt the video looks good and better than the mk2 , there's simply more detail. BUT the footage is no way real 1080p, I would say a 720p that lets you down in fine details, typical of every non-GH2 DSLR

Do we have 1080p videos from the D800 yet?
Yes and they are as soft as 5D but with awful aliasing and moire. HDMI output on that camera might be a different bag.

    That's what I thought...
