over inflated is that inflated as in bubble.
this is not some south sea bubble
not some tulip o mania
no big bang.
show me a pro anamorphic as good as an iscorama or better
tell me the price.
iscorama is cheap
optically under priced
it is not about the price but the precious value.
how many folks have shelled out silly money for china junk optics with 0.95 f stop.
poor copies of leica noct
china has little value now or in 30 years.
the stuff may work but has little soul
that is the modern way
we live in satanic times a new dark age.
iscorama is from a time a great expansive period 1900-1950s the period when great optical men tried to best each other in design.
out do and out wit in light ray trace.
sub standard is the norm today .
input tapped into computer cheap aspherical optic added a new lens for the hd world.
clowns knocking out variations on a theme or just blatant copies average at best.
iscorama inflated no way.
a good price for those who can make it work.
the bolex moller 1.5x is treasure for me has a better look than the iscorama another optical marvel under priced.
we all want a bargain all could do with a free lunch forever.
all would like a mercedes for the price of a shit ford.
we want the best for next to nothing now godamit and how dare we not be given it.
what is the problem.
we know the cost but not the value.
the same chap shot this which i like

Tony, you are "The Knowledge", you should have a honorary nickname here!
Isco should just make it again! They would clean up I think, regardless of startup cost. Loss-lead for a year then continue... Unless I'm missing something...

Francisco Rios reacted to JohnBarlow in SOLD: Moeller 32/2x CinemaScope Compact Anamorphot Rig
Hey Francisco, thanks It was you who turned me on to this lens as I really appreciate your work. I have two so this one is for sale. It is interesting to note that the one I am keeping serial 761xxxx, has Cyan coating producing blue/yellow flares and the one for sale here serial 762xxxx has a Magenta coating producing purple/green flares. I wonder why they made the change? I was tempted to keep the two because of the different coatings, but this is a chance for someone to join the exclusive Moeller 32/2x club ;) -

properly serviced these can be better than kowa bell howell less distortion as well.
very under rated optic these mollers not sure why they are just great.

Francisco Rios reacted to tony wilson in GH2 Hack vs GH3
a used gh2 with a hack is the best investment now.
i think the images look more analogue less nasty.
gh1 and gh2 without hacks gave supreme moving images for size and cost.
rough waters ahead it is going to start getting ugly why waste money on new gh3.
it may not be the black magic that wins.
dalsa had the best 4k movie camera better pictures than red who remembers them.
red had it for a while until alexa stole the show.
black magic rocks the boat enough for sony, fuji or panasonic to reply.
gh3 sensor looks like video if you like the look of last years camera get it.

Francisco Rios reacted to JohnBarlow in My compact Moeller 32/2x rig. Scope on a Rope !
@ Nick
No footage yet, I have only just put the final touches to the rig - still waiting on minor parts like metal knobs etc.
I did a quick test with stills with the Moeller and Auto 110 2.8/50mm see below
The first is at MFD plus 1 Zeiss Proxar and the second with 2 Zeiss Proxars 0.5 bayonetted together, sharp enough for me :P

Storaro is was just to good..
most directors find it impossible to work with people like him.
he has more insight more vision to intellectual.
gordon willis and sascha vierny also.
directors want yes men
not men that say that idea is not good man : )
you need to be talented and strong to employ such talented beasts.
Apocolypse Now vs The Last Emperor
tricky how about this beauty a masterclass that has been copied by many directors.

Francisco Rios reacted to JohnBarlow in My compact Moeller 32/2x rig. Scope on a Rope !
I thought I would share some shots of my compact Moeller rig. The tiny lens is the Pentax Auto 110 2.8/50mm lens, which has a rotating front element, which is not a problem in my setup and is just perfect for a 2.35:1 crop. A really great feature is that I can set up for precision verticality once and thereafter all my shoots are perfectly aligned. Goodbye slanted video. Another great feature of the lens support is that it lets me use auto focus rear lenses. I just focus the Moeller and half press the camera shutter to focus the rear lens and I am done. This makes life with a double focus system a breeze. I decided to name this "Scope on a Rope" :P -
Francisco Rios reacted to tony wilson in Good Taking Lens For Iscomorphot 8/1.5x
canon ssc and early fd are mighty fine japan refined existing tens technology the russians mainly copied.
the russians in the 1950s just used industrial espionage..like china today.
japan said let us take these recipes some 70-90 years old and make them better or at least not make them worse.
after ww2 japan took on the world and until corruption and western blackmail kicked in they where doing very well.
japan has many technologies that will never see the light of day because of big oil and big nuke that is why they are being destroyed now.
-
Francisco Rios reacted to tony wilson in Testing the Technovision 35mm Anamorphic T/1.4
the zeiss spherical part is the only computer designed part of the system shiga of japan was 2 brothers cutting cylindrical anamorphic optics by hand mainly for jdc and technovision.
many mathematical calculations done the old way with an abacus.
original anamorphic designs would have been with spherical english cooke speed panchro optics recipes going back nearly 100 years.
cooke are probably the greatest optics ever made for the movies and probably the simplest design.
introducing more complex faster zeiss optics into a hand made anamorphic system with different focal length without a super computer redesign will sometimes make for a less than perfect optic.
panavision in the early 90s in canada designed a more perfect lens using military super computers of the time.
boring optics.
hand grinding any optic is a dead art it is surprising distortion is not worse.

Francisco Rios got a reaction from jgharding in The widest aspect ratio I've yet seem in a promo...
JG,
Take a look at these.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyvision
Abel Gance's 1927 film Napoleon . "It involves the simultaneous projection of three reels of silent film arrayed in a horizontal row, making for a total aspect ratio of 4:1 (3× 1.33:1)"
Cheers!

Francisco Rios reacted to Bruno in Christopher Doyle calls out The Academy over Oscar for Cinematography
I don't think he's skeptic about digital, it might not be his personal preference, but he sides with Anthony Dod Mantle in that article, who has been shooting on digital since the Dogma movement's first days. He's die hard about having artistic control and no studio interference, which is different, and he's awesome!
I recommend the documentary/TV documentary "In the mood for Doyle" if you guys haven't seen it.

Francisco Rios reacted to tony wilson in The Anamorphic lens REPAIR thread
red stan's sage wisdom and advice on good and shit anamorphics.
1.small optics give you an easier life and nice close focus.
2.focus test your anamorphic as soon as you get it if you cannot get a sharp picture get a refund or a discount.
3.do not take any crap bull from a seller especially if he has sold you junk costing over 250 dollars.
4.if your lens has major damage it may be beyond economic repair meaning it could cost 2-5 times it's value for the repair.
5.with repairs expect a wait from 6 weeks to 3 months any good repair guy is always busy.
i had a nikon lens take 6 months for a complicated repair once.
6.explain to repair guy clearly what you think is wrong it saves time and money.
7.except the fact that some anamorphics are just not worth saving or repairing
8.many ebay anamorphic optics are the same optics being purchased fiddled with then sold on.
if in doubt walk away.
9.if your seller can take a foto of the lens and put a lengthy cut and past bull shit discription with a price tag of a 1000 dollars plus.
ask him why he has not bothered to shoot through the anamorphic is it because it is soft : )
10.at least 35% of anamorphics need servicing why do you think rental companies and studios had camera lens service depts.
11.main problems optic to optic alignment issue giving soft picture.
dried out focus helicoid grease.
dirty internal optics, fungus and external coating problems.
lens separation.
a lens clean and service should optimize the system allowing use of faster taking lens.
why get stuck in the 1950s hollywood rut of f8-16
12.remember repairing a car after a major crash is gonna cost a lot more time and money than a simple service.
13.quality shipping box within a box method is a must.
bad shipping with several impact drops along the journey will give you a bad lens.
14.i did not like ending on 13.

Francisco Rios reacted to tony wilson in Tokina +0.4 achromat VS Tokina +0.5 quick film test
that is cheating f4...
try it at f1.4 or even 0.95 : )
regardless of what john barlow says a simple locked off tripod test with camera taking lens wide open shows the improvements. of doublet close up over single element.
reduced spot size on a doublet correcting light ray path giving more clarity to the image.
in fact i just tested a +1 kinoptik doublet it destroys the single element angenieux.
chester moore hall invented the doublet in 1740 the design has been copied ever since if it was not needed or if single element was so good then doublet designs would of died out long ago.
doublets are the high end route.
tiffen and schneider use single element window glass called white water not optical bk7 in the close up they make.
they rely on people stopping down to improve performance.
achromatics require higher end optical glass and quality spec and build.really
stopping a bad optic down will cure most problems opening wide or one stop down from wide open shows the power of a good achromatic doublet design.
optical law transcends vimeo pictures

Francisco Rios reacted to tony wilson in Zeiss 50mm Ultrascope?
i have one of these lens...
any bond film using them the lens would not look llke this..
we are talking a 6000 dollar rebuild it is better built than a lomo the original designer was a super talented clever engineer.
http://www.in70mm.com/newsletter/1999/57/jacobsen/index.htm
like anything complex and old it needs to be stripped down and rebuilt to get the max out of it.
it may work great but these ebay dealers are mostly scum every item i have ever purchased from them looked nice and was faulty and untested.

Francisco Rios reacted to Andrew Reid in Christopher Doyle calls out The Academy over Oscar for Cinematography
The fact that the award was a piece of shit shouldn't deminish the work of Miranda, but let's face it Doyle is speaking from a position of strength, his work rates far above Miranda's to date. Miranda's cinematography on Tron Legacy and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is able (didn't like the films though) - but Doyle on Hero and 2046 - that's masterful and in a completely different league.
Christopher Doyle and Anthony Dod Mantle are purists, artists more than craftsmen or career DPs, have lensed some of my favourite cinematography and are inspirational to me personally in their whole approach.
Mantle is himself an Oscar winner for Slumdog - amazing - he's also a digital innovator, one of the first to embrace the format the late 90's with DV. Total respect to him. He's worked with two of my favourite directors - Lars Von Trier, Danny Boyle. Dogville took a paired down approach to staging (to say the least) and cinematography, the complete opposite of Life of Pi but still has bags of atmosphere and menace.
When Life of Pi got the award for cinematography - I felt it was for the technical achievement more than anything else, and that the DP was one of a large team who made that happen. Maybe it's possible the academy members overlooked that and just felt the finished film overall looked great and decided to pin that on a figurehead. I can completely understand the VFX award. The cinematography one was a mis-step as I think there were other guys nominated who deserved it more.
