1. The magic is purely that of the lens being designed to cover a full frame sensor. Cropping into that image circle removes some of the more interesting aspects of the image toward the edges and means you need to go for a wider focal length for a wide field of view, making depth of field deeper and less shallow. A full frame sensor allows you to really open up the bokeh at 50mm compared to 25mm. The Voigtlander on the GH2 is a superb lens. The super fast aperture of F0.95 compensates somewhat for the wider focal length on the 1.86x crop sensor of the GH2, giving you a shallower depth of field, a dreamy (yet still sharp) look wide open and it has very unusual bokeh, and a radial curving of the bokeh around the edges of the frame along with a very attractive vignette. It mimics a lot of the qualities of a lens when it is on a full frame sensor. The GH2 with good glass is lovely. Resolution on the GH2 is fantastic. The crop sensor allows for a fast aperture at tele-photo focal lengths, as 85mm is tele-photo on the GH2 whereas on full frame it is just a medium portrait lens. Both of these cameras have their special qualities.
  2.
Thank you for the brilliant site Andrew and the regular news and updates that keep it fresh. I wonder if you would mind elaborating on your comment.. "But there is a magic to full frame, as there was with the old Mark II. It is all in the rendering of the lenses". I find no-one being able to pin this down properly. Apart from the crop factor's effect on focal length, how is the same lens 'rendering' differently on a full-frame to give it 'magic' rather than if it is on a crop sensor body?
Since the sensor is larger, you can use a longer focal length but maintain a wider field of view, especially with an anamorphic. So 50mm is as wide as a 25mm on the GH2. Now that means you see more of the rendering of the image in the circle of light projected by the lens into the sensor, and a shallower DOF partly due to the longer focal length. It is a unique look.
  3. GH3, if this year, will be at Photokina as NAB is not the market for a consumer stills camera, albeit one with a very well integrated video mode - a true hybrid cam. Panasonic will unveil some new video cameras at NAB based around AVCHD Ultra (12 bit, 4:4:4 codec).

  5. In terms of the bitrates the GH2 is better than AVCHD 2.0 so it would rather be a backward step. It is closer to AVC Intra 100. Now 1080/60p is definitely of interest, and there's a patch for it in PTools but it doesn't yet work properly. Corrupt recordings.

    EOS 60D or 7D

Both the same in terms of lenses, image quality and 24p. The difference is entirely in the build and the monitoring. Weather proofing and full 1080p HDMI on the 7D. Swivel screen on the 60D which I actually prefer sometimes over a HDMI monitor or EVF when shooting light, or for stealth factor.
  7. I've removed kanton's access to the forums because he's trolling. First one we've ever had. Had an eye on this guy for a few weeks now. His posts have added nothing but pointless argument and he was unpleasant to a number of people including myself, without anything positive to balance it!! Not a reflection on anyone else... You are all constructive and polite, please carry on.
  8. I'll provide two, purely because I would love to see you argue that red is blue. It is entertaining.  ::) http://vimeo.com/33047750 http://vimeo.com/33025136
  9.
I think I smirked in disbelief at how "under par" the NEX7 appeared by comparison. The really cool thing is that the GH2 can go from a super sharp highly detailed image that will essentially walk all over every DSLR + the FS100 / AF100 and then morph straight into a softer filmic image with the right lens / patch / filter combination, that will rival any digital camera under 20k outside of RED for producing a true cinematic image. It's mind boggling how adaptable the GH2 really is, it can be anything you want it to be. Something about the motion rendering / blur between the frames that gives the GH2 a very filmic feel as well. Many people don't know how to unlock it's secrets and just go by what they see in videos made on lumix lenses... but they have no idea. It's truly a gem, that still very few people have discovered, let alone learned to use properly.
Very well put! It is underrated by the masses.
  10. I'm not saying the GH2 outdoes anything. It is well known what the strengths of an Alexa are. The GH2 is not going to be an A-cam on Bond. You just quoted back at me what I wrote in my own article! "You'd want the dynamic range, the great skin tones". What I am saying is that you can intercut between the 3 cameras perfectly well.
It is mentioned purely because of the end result being closer than you'd expect for the price gap. Should be obvious really. Don't need to go overboard on explaining the obvious. If you were shooting Sky Fall on a $100m budget you'd have to be absolutely out of your mind not to choose the very best cinema camera that technology allows. The GH2 is not that camera, the Alexa is. Simple. But the other story is what EOSHD is about.
On restricted space were a small camera are needed I can see the use of dSLR. I can also see the use of dSLR  mounted on mini remote control helicopter for moving overhead shot instead of mounting an Alexa and risk losing an expensive piece of kit in case it crashes.
Also as car cam, that needs light rig, where heavy gear would be a very nasty projectile if there was a problem. Also DSLRs and small cameras have a stealth factor which can be useful for certain on-location stuff in public spaces.

  14. Yes, try the EOSHD Unified hack or enter your own bitrate for 1080/30p in PTools
  15. Katon and Astro. Not taking sides but will say this: think of the value you can add to the forum, and what others would find interesting to read.
  16.
Since I already have 70-200mm f/2.8 and 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L series zooms from Canon, and especially since I spent a couple weeks using their 600mm F4 L series in December on both the GH2 and Canon crop bodies, it is hard for me to get excited about another 300mm telephoto, even if it is light. With a 600mm in EX mode on the GH2, the moon`s largest crater dominated the screen. As to Katon`s comment, I in know why mean to disrespect your experience or background when I say that there is no reason why more resolution has to look harsher. The biggest problems going from film to HD digital production was the high contrast and harshness and overly sharp look of things, not the (alleged) increase in resolution (which was really much more a situation specific question as some film prints were clearly superior to others and they wore over time).
Ah but I bet the 600mm F4L from Canon is not £350!  ;D You are right about HD digital production re: contrast and harshness. Harsh highlights, sudden roll off, crushed blacks, over sharpened footage, it all conspires for a less cinematic look. There's no single benefit to the 5D Mark III which solves all of this compared to the GH2. Neither are an Alexa. The trick is to expose well, choose the right image profile on location, avoid heavy grading and most importantly use a cinematic looking piece of glass. Using a good ND also helps, by keeping shutter speed optimal in bright light. I didn't use one with this test because it is purely a resolution test not a test of shutter speeds and 24p. Beyond that basic technique, the main difference between non-cinematic footage and cinematic footage is the way it has been shot by the idiot behind the camera!
Andrew, can you do a rundown of contax zeiss glass that is available for DSLR work? there isnt a detailed list to refer to and much of the information out there about converting these lenses are strewn about several different sites. See how they compare in this test video. Later in the video there is also a test of the Contax Zeiss 300mm F4 in Ex-Tele crop mode (1:1 1080p from the centre of the sensor) on the GH2. In this mode you can see into people’s windows from 2 miles away sat on a hillside. It is insane!! 20. Go and see what Canon say about the design of the sensor and prove to me that it is BS. Because at the moment you are the one full of BS.

The leader of Panasonic’s digital imaging development team has admitted that resources have been diverted from global shutter development in order to satisfy market demand for 3D gimmickry. 22. In my opinion... A mixture of April Fools Day and Russian humour. ::)
  23. There's nothing similar what-so-ever between the 5D Mark III's sensor and C300. One is a 8MP sensor with custom bayer design for true 1080p and the other is a classic bayer 22MP for photography.
  24. What have you done to that frame grab to make it look so bad?  ??? There aren't any halos on the original footage so just curious to what you did to introduce them... What is the point? There's even one on the text I added, that wasn't there before (Photoshop). In my opinion the footage looks hands down better. Not sure if in-camera sharpening was on or off in this test, something to bear in mind too.
