Apple talk dramatic 2018 Mac Pro update amidst multiple controversies
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I do. A workflow is not just about one app. It's about the whole ecosystem. The user interface stability and design is also important and an area where Windows doesn't meet my needs yet. It's flakey. People who aren't familiar with Mac OS tend to think it has a dumbed down UI but actually it has huge depth and most importantly enforces a CONSISTENCY across all your apps, rather than the wild-west of Windows where the basic UI conventions are scatter-dash and random across the board. Unix is also a fundamentally more secure and efficient core technology than Windows, and it evolved from NEXTSTEP which was more advanced as well, along with better memory management and better drivers which aren't as bloated and don't need to be constantly updated (with the risks of something breaking when you do). The drivers on Mac machines only need to work with a small subset of hardware chips whereas on Windows they need to support bloody everything ever made! Apple has also been careful to strip away the legacy bloat in their OS, whereas Windows still clings to ancient things at the core of it. -
Apple talk dramatic 2018 Mac Pro update amidst multiple controversies

You're. -
Ah makes sense, thanks Are people seeing much benefit going from a 1000x card to the newer faster ones, in terms of reliability? The komputerbay cards sometimes bog down at the start of a shot.

Why is 1.1.3 better?

I'm shooting YouTube content with my 1DC and CONTAX lenses
Andrew Reid replied to Dave Maze's topic in Cameras
Seconded. -
PLEEEASE SOMEBODY try the 10bit and 12bit at 4K All this 3K stuff looks great though.
-
Careful it has been known to go out of stock

Max height is 1920 but of course depends on bit depth and card speeds Still some questions for you early mavericks out there - Does the lossless 58% JPEG compression mode work in 3K and 4K? How's the quality of 3840×1600 at 10bit? Any DNGs to share? You can pop the plastic back off to make most EF-S lenses fit the 5D and 1D C. I have used the 18-135mm EF-S on my 1D X Mark II with no issues.

Before the 14bit RAW with ML was pixel binned 1080p This is like cropping a full res RAW still, 1:1 pixel readout It is not just going to step up the sharpness and detail.... The dynamic range and noise performance should improve as well. Astounding work.

That frame I could have sworn was from a Hollywood movie but it's actually just somewhere in England isn't it Well it demonstrates everything I love about 5D Mark III 14bit colour. Is there any reason why you're shooting in 2x crop 3K and not the 1.5x crop UHD? The 5D MK IV would actually be rather tricky as these ML modes work from a crop of the sensor. Rather crop 3K and 4K from a 22MP sensor than a 30MP one. Canon should make an official ML special edition 5D3 and they'd sell a boat load and share the profits with a1ex.

That's right they did the same thing with the crop mode feature. I love how none of the usual blogs like c5d have run the story because they lack the capacity to figure things out... non-users will have a hard time believing this for a few days. Try the 3840 x 1600! 1.5x crop is much easier to work with than 2x crop on EF mount as you can use the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 for wide angle duties. None of the higher resolution modes above 1080p do Canon live-view, so it will be a low frame rate B/w image. I will be reunited with my 5D Mark III on Thursday, until then hopefully we can answer these questions on the forum.
-
I'm not a huge fan of the Tokina 11-16 either. Sigma 20mm F1.4 ART is your friend Closest you can get to 28mm equivalent for 4K 1.5x crop without losing 'the full frame wide angle look'. I'm kinda interested in the new 1080/60p mode - quality a big step up from earlier with 3x3 binning, right? And how about the 14bit JPEG lossless compression mode? In 4K are people finding that they have to drop to 10bit / 12bit from 14bit to get the data rate under the card limits? A lot of stuff to experiment with and plenty of ways to get the data rate down... I like it. Did they bust through the earlier 90Mb/s limit with the new faster CF cards or did the card controller stop at 100?
-
Yep clarified, that's how it works. Crazy I know.
-
What about the HDMI output? Does that offer a workable preview while the camera records 4K?
-
Yeah same as for GH4. Code comes printed on a card inside a box like before the internet even existed

An inverse April Fools is ingenious. Got to love ML Unfortunately my 5D3 is not with me at the moment... will have to go and grab it pronto. Is this shot at 14bit or 10bit?
-
What's Canon even been doing??
-
*Sound of stampede of people going to eBay and buying 5D Mark III* Well done Magic Lantern.... Mind is still spinning, cannot quite get my head around it. Anyone comment on rolling shutter in the 3K and UHD crop modes at 24p? Is it much worse than 1080p?

Sony FS5 Mark II rumored for NAB 2017
Andrew Reid replied to photographer-at-large's topic in Cameras
More dumb rumours. It has nowhere near been long enough after the original FS5 to consider replacing it even by Sony standards. Pro stuff is on much longer cycles than consumer... 3 years minimum usually. -
Panasonic: We will accelerate the LUMIX project under new structure
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yes it is another level entirely. So much stronger signal from the sensor, less noise pollution = better colour. They have 3D colour processing onboard as well which is usually something you only find on a high-end colourist's GPU -
Well exciting though such a firmware update would be... 1. There's very little chance of it being real 2. It's still not got all the features of the GH5 or 5 axis IBIS 3. No articulated screen and no EVF 4. Worse rolling shutter. But hey. Canon badge.
-
It would be unprecedented for Canon to buck the video standards with 1080/75p. That part of the rumour seems made up. Could even be an attempt to make people reconsider their move to Sony or their GH5 order and wait for NAB. Unless the 75fps is part of a variable-frame-rate mode with in-camera conform to 24p then I just can't see it happening and the crop is not just a software / firmware thing - the hardware needs to be capable of that 5K readout as well.

Panasonic: We will accelerate the LUMIX project under new structure
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Here is the source for the full interview with Panasonic at CES regarding restructuring. Source: AV Watch, Japan. https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fav.watch.impress.co.jp%2Fdocs%2Fseries%2Fce%2F1037593.html By dismantling they mean taking the good bits (GH5) and putting them under the umbrella of the black-goods division which makes TVs, etc. I won't miss the compacts and camcorders and it was inevitable that Panasonic would scale back production of these given the current market. Micro Four Thirds lives on and continues to grow in sales.
