jurgen
Hey guys, Have a GH3 that I use exclusively with adapters (for EF and FD). I have three different adapters and on every one there is a very slight wiggle - maybe 1/2 a millimeter - between the adapter and the mount on the camera. Is this normal? It almost feels like a tolerance "built in" to the mount but I can and have felt it move while shooting. Is this normal, or do I have a faulty lens mount on the camera? It happens with every mount. I unfortunately do not have any M4/3 lenses to test with, otherwise I would have. Thanks for your time! Jurgen *EDIT* just tested my Sigma 18-35 on my old 600D and it has this very slight wiggle as well. I guess it's just an allowable tolerance? tosvus
Not sure. My native lenses are all nice and solid. I have a kipon adapter for Minolta which wasn't cheap, that has a fair amount of wiggle, as does a cheap m42 adapter. My b4 eng adapter otoh is *almost* solid. jurgen
Glad to hear you say that about the Kipon. Mine is as well. My FD adapter is almost solid, though none of them are really too bad (just a bit annoying to know it's there.) Will be sure to pick up a native lens to see. Thanks! The more/most expensive ones never, or hardly ever have any (low tolerance) wiggle. The cheaper, simpler adapters may also lack some small parts that apply pressure against the lens mount, lock the lens in place and thus eliminate all wiggle. But in short, if you wish to get rid of the wiggle and other possible performance woes, buy better adapters. The better ones are more expensive for a reason. The Novoflex ones are generally good and often considered the best ones, and it shows in the price. The second best level, according to my own experience, would be the Fotodiox ones, which are not quite as pricey, but still better than most of the cheaper ones. Adriano Lolli's Coma ones aren't apparently too shabby, either, but for those I have no personal experience. All the rest belong to the lower level category, where you mostly get what you pay for, and getting a good one is a matter of luck, and perhaps lens mount type. The simplest screw mount ones are usually safer cases. I've sometimes bought those dirt cheap (if you buy them from HK) ones, too, and at least one of those that I still have has that typical wiggle, whereas another similar, but much more expensive one does not. andy lee
yes this happens alot , I have a whole bunch of adapters and alot of them 'wiggle' I have found it to be a random occurance between batches of the same adapter , I have 3 fd to micro 4/3 adapters all the same make one fits like a glove perfect no wiggle the other two wiggle and the same with my C/Y to micro 4/3 one is great the other 2 move a bit on the body - its just a manufacturing issue , if you buy a few you will get one that fits ok. Minolta to m4/3 - one wiggles one fits fine olympus same as above one ok one wiggles you can solve the wiggle by using ptfe plumbers tape and put a small piece across the adaptor and lock it onto the body , this makes a tighter join and stops the wiggle
jurgen
Thanks for all the information guys. I hadn't heard of Novoflex before, I'll check them out! Aside from light leaks (which I don't seem to have), this isn't going to, like, I don't know, damage the camera mount or anything, is it? I can't think of any way in which it would, but I'm pretty green. Thanks again for all your help, guys!
Quirky
Apart from Novoflex, there are also some other high-quality adapter makers who specialise in adapting PL and C mounts for the usual suspects, for example, but I don't remember the names right now, and have no personal experience for those, yet. But I bet you can find comments, links and maybe even tests about them online, like from the blogs of some of the "socially active" filmmakers like Philip Bloom and Vincent Laforet, for example. But the Novoflex ones are the best of the generic DSLR bunch, anyway, and the Fotodiox ones, for example, are pretty nice substitutes for less money. Oh and nope, the adapters won't damage the camera, unless you do something utterly stupid. The larger tolerances are a quality and comfort issue, not a safety issue. Guest
A free, simple solution that works well (though works best if you keep your mounts attached to lenses):
jurgen
Interesting! The problem I'm having, though, is between the mount and the camera itself. The lenses all fit in snugly. Based on the fact that the camera itself is the female mount in that scenario, I don't know how well the paper method will work. Will examine tonight! Thanks, guy!
