  1. all true. hyperfocal and zone focus etc are really helpful. I shoot photos using olympus e-1 with shg 14-35 f2 and 35-100 f2 and 55-200 f2.8 many times, as I like the e-1's ccd. e-1's af is dinosaur according to current standards, but I never feel the lacking of a modern af. I shoot outdoor daylight events most of the times, lighting is not an issue. I use single af plus mf. I used to use f2, but quickly found out that the editors don't like the blurred background, as they want to see a group of people gathering and all of them need to have in focus face. I later use f4 all the time, much higher keeper rate. my point is that not every scenario needs the latest technology platforms, as you move on to these newer platforms, something else may be lost. it is always balancing. I totally understand that for indoor sports, low light wedding, events like these need the best af for photo, and c-af for video.
  2. I think that in the scenarios of complicated movements by many people in low light, phase detection af may be more reliable. for many common shooting conditions, the contrast based af may be ok. phase detection af uses pixels for focusing, so the image quality is actually a little bit lower than contrast based af. each technology platform has its own pros and cons. just prioritize the needs then choose the right technology platform.
  3. s5's video af seems not far behind the s5ii.
  4. not as good as a gimbal, a little bit worse than go pro 12. but very impressive as it is casual walking video making. I think the static shots should be very stable on this camera, which is actually the most practical way to shoot. if want to shoot walking all the time, an action cam is more proper.

    24p is outdated

for contrast based af, 60p helps af accuracy and reliability. I guess that for focus pullers, 60p helps too as the image is crispier.
  6. there are huge differences in terms of color in different cameras. even raw cameras are different, not to say 10 bit or 8 bit cameras. 14 bit raw cameras are different from 12 bit raw cameras. in still worlds, medium format cameras have 16 bit raw, just different level.
  7. this is why I think Arri's venture into the broadcast network will not be successful. although Alexa series are the reference cameras in terms of image quality, they are not essential to news reporting. in some small segments, Alexa may be successful, but still not irreplaceable. for example, us nfl shooting teams use Alexa 35 as the standard camera. it may suit them, as the football field is ok for 30-300mm canon cinema zoom. and the cameramen do not need to run and gone so much. they just need to walk by the field line. and, nfl has money. even so, this work can be done using the latest hybrids too.
  8. s5 with helios 58mm static shots seems fine to my eyes.
  9. now I appreciate Olympus ibis more, as om-1 has a smaller body than gh6/7. in a smaller body, incorporating a world class ibis, and longer battery life, there must be some secret sauce.
  10. gerald undone thinks that s1 has a much better ibis than s5. probably the bigger body, the high power consumption, helps to maintain a higher performance ibis system in s1. sometimes bigger body still reigns.
  11. s5iix seems improves the ibis significantly upon s1h, s5.
  12. a young guy like him spends about $3000 for a s 5 ii/x and a 50 mm prime lens and a gimbal, spends sometime practicing, then gets shots at Hollywood blockbuster level only available to a closed circle 10 years ago. amazing time.
  13. s5 ii with a 50mm prime. pretty good. certainly not as good as a gimbal, but the static handheld shots are good enough.
  14. s5 iix /s5 ii seems pretty good at 20mm. there is high cropping factor when using eis.
  15. wide angle seems fine, he used s1h and a 28 mm Zeiss lens.
  16. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SadhXkn9VE0 https://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/44977-enjoying-the-panasonic-s1-again/page/5/ This one was done by a member several years ago using his S1. He tested mf 90mm, 85mm, 55mm lenses. Seems to me that S1 ibis is at a similar level to EM-5, a little bit worse. I tested EM-5 ibis extensively 10 years ago. On EM-5, 25mm and wider is tripod like, 25-50mm is monopod like, over 50mm the footage is possibly usable, but there is no guarantee. I suppose OM-1 ibis is significantly better than EM-5. There are about three generations in between. With Resolve's Stabilization, S1 ibis may be OK. According to my experience, Resolve's stabilization generates artifacts, the degree of the artifacts is different from different codecs, different frame rates, and different settings. Not sure why.
  17. skin tones and color are correlated inherently. difference races have different skin colors, need different ire to exposure right, the sensor and the color array filter also need to be optimized for these. very complicated. in the future, I will not be surprised that some cameras are designed for white people, some for black people, some for asian. this is huge market. I think in the film era, that Kodak film stock portra is optimized for white people, fuji provia is optimized for asian people. maybe there are film stocks optimized for black people, etc.
  18. you are right, he did not compare om-1 to g9ii extensively. I suspect that he did the test privately, but he did not want to publish the results to hurt penny sells. om-1 can couple with some lenses with ois, like 12-100mm f4, 300mm f4.
  19. I think it depends. when the resolution is low, resolution is the most critical criteria. after reaching 1080p or 4k, resolution is not that important. dr is good enough once it reaches 11-12 stops, going to 15 stops, but sacrificing the mid tones, i.e., the skin tones, it is not the right way. canon sensor is tuned for skin tones, so lower dr, Nikon sensor is tuned for dr, and the skin tones are not good. I think right now, the color and the skin tones should kick in as the most important criteria, as we already have 1080p and 4k available everywhere. dr is at least 10-12 stops for most of the cameras now.
  20. totally agree. color and skin tones are essential and critical. if 5d3 does not have the magic lantern hack, it is nothing. with the hack, it is a 14-bit color depth raw camera, I doubt if there is another camera having this feature. Alexa is 14 bit, but most of the time people use prores4444 instead of arriraw.
  21. he tested both, dual is, single ibis, and other modes.
