  1. @Cliff Totten wow that’s crazy how one the largest retailers for their product didn’t know!
  2. I’m thinking not many folk have received their key. Looks like online stores like B&H are either out or haven’t even got stock in yet.
  3. This is interesting. I honestly wasn’t expecting the S1 to get raw given that could be a big selling point for a higher priced S1H. Also, wondered if they’d do it at all given the Varicam line. Then again, I think you said the S1H would be 6k raw right? So that would be full sensor instead of a crop which probably would entice some folks to upgrade for more money.
  4. @andjo thank you!! so actually that sounds better than I expected. Do you have the v-log upgrade to see if it shows up as well? Maybe I missed that in your screenshots The lack of full screen view is disappointing but I could work around that. Agree the VFR limitation is just weird. Surely the H model won’t have that.
  5. Anyone know what video controls are available in the Lumix Link mobile app? I got the impression it was limited compared to GH. Wondering if you can shoot 10-bit v-log in all the frame rates. Was gonna run over to Best Buy to test but it seems they don’t have an S series in stock.
  6. Oh wow. So all you lose is super HFR and CFAST? Looks like less DR too. Hmmm
  7. Does anyone know if the LUT view function on the GH5/S translates to what you see in the Lumix mobile phone app? Or do you just get the straight V-log L picture? I know Adam Wilt makes the Field Monitor app that can do this, but was just curious if it was natively supported. Thanks!
  8. @Andrew Reid ahh ok interesting. Will have to check that album out. If I remember correctly, part of the thesis in his other book is centered around how television has contributed to kids growing up faster, while also creating adults that have a more childlike maturity. He talked about how, prior to television, most knowledge was acquired through reading books. This created a kind of built-in barrier to acquiring knowledge of certain things, and therefore you kept your ignorance longer. TV and visual media has eroded or removed that barrier. I know there's more to the book, but that's the bit I remembered.
  9. @Andrew Reid I was reading this and immediately started thinking about "The Disappearance of Childhood". I was about to mention the parallels until I realized it was Neil Postman who also wrote that!
  10. @drm yeah, ha I just updated my post because I forgot to mention that. I love the v-log footage I've seen and what Andrew posted. I happen to think the Varicam look is, dare I say, as good as Alexa so I feel like the S1 has some of that mojo. That's interesting about your experience switching to BRAW. That's kind of the feeling I was thinking.. it might be as easy as working with ProRes but with the benefits of raw. My MBP can't handle 4k compressed footage too well and I hate transcoding. (So I'd probably end up shooting the S1 to my Ninja V to avoid having to transcode or use its native compressed codec). Yeah, the C200 price drop had me rethinking it. Even the Varicam LT drop had me dreaming.. but that's way more camera than I need or could handle as a lone shooter. @tweak ML Raw has tempted me to almost buy an older Canon camera to try it, but I never did and the workflow seemed more cumbersome than I'd prefer. In the examples I've seen it's crazy how good even the rec709 off the E2 looked. Very impressive. And I love that it shoots ProRes already. Hmmmm, got a lot to think about to make a decision.
  11. @webrunner5 oh, good point! I realllllly like the Varicam look from footage I've seen. For that reason the S1 seems tempting also. I'm really curious if the S1H ends up getting up getting any kind of raw support. I do have a few EF lenses, but not heavily invested in any one system. @tweak Thanks for the report. Very curious to see what the raw update does. The S6 test footage also looks amazing. I may have to wait until that comes out to compare as well. Having said that, I can see raw for me being of those things like virtual reality... it sounds really cool, but then the novelty wears off
  12. Yeah, I did see your examples as well and they also bugged me. But as you say, I'm not seeing complaints on image quality which is a good sign. True, there is a decent price difference between the BMPCC and E2. I'm just looking for something in the sub $5000 range, compact form factor, that shoots 12-bit. A used C200 is almost tempting, but I'd prefer something a bit smaller. Plus, I'm not sure my 2015 MBP could handle a multi-cam project of CRM files and I'd rather not transcode. Before looking at those two I had picked up used copies of the A7 III, Z6, and EOS R to compare with the intention of keeping one. I had been leaning towards the EOS R and quickly realized how nice it was to have the 10-bit 4k out to the Ninja V vs the 8-bit I was used from the Sony Alpha's. But getting a taste of 10-bit has me longing for 12-bit :). The BRAW on the BMPCC is tempting as I think it'd play nice on my MBP. Ideally I'd like to see how the ZRAW looks and performs on the E2 before I pick one up. Hopefully that comes out soonish? Also waiting on the Z6 ProRes RAW update to make my mind up about that camera. Although I must say that having a small cinema camera that shoots raw internally and not having to use an external recorder sounds nice. I really like the Ninja V, but I love to keep things minimal and simple also.
  13. Was just looking into this cam and getting pretty pumped about it as a possible alternative to the BMPCC 4k, but then I saw the video @zerocool22 posted and I have to agree the first few seconds exhibit a strange noise pattern that seems partially static (versus the more random noise that you typically see). Strange that not everybody sees it though. I'm watching on my 2015 15" Macbook Pro in Safari. Took a screenshot of what I'm seeing from first few seconds of the video. I don't believe it's compression artifacts from Vimeo. I haven't seen any other examples or mentions of any FPN issues though so hoping it's just an isolated thing. Actually, it might be 120 FPS footage. I found a few accounts of some noise/lines in 120 FSP such as this one: https://eks.tv/z-cam-e2-first-impressions/ Apparently overexposing can remedy it. If that's the case that's fine although I agree with others about some other weird artifacts in the video aside from the noise. Hopefully that is due to post processing or something else.
  14. I think it’d have to be crop since raw is 1:1. Unless they can pull off 5k or 6k resolution. Jeromy of Atomos did say they were recording at 4k “and higher” in their testing. But the dynamic range is what I’ve been really curious about. We all know stills DR doesn’t translate to video DR for multiple reasons. But in this case will it translate? I think each sensor also has degraded bit depth as you move into faster frame rates from stills to video. So there is that factor. But if this is 12-bit and it’s raw you’d think you might see DR that is comparable to stills. I suppose the raw codec compression is another limiting factor. Although HQ is supposed to be a negligible loss. I picked a Z6 and Ninja V up used for a good price so I’m eager to see if the workflow will be worth the hassle. Would be nice if Resolve adds support in the future too.
  15. Thanks guys. Yeah just saw the article. I was initially puzzled as I didn’t think a RED could do ProRes Raw.
  16. Ahh that’s interesting as well. Curious what their next moves in the video world will be.
  17. Oh wow! Thanks for the link. Interesting.. That makes more sense.

    Nikon 8K?

This is interesting: https://www.techradar.com/news/did-apple-just-blow-the-lid-on-a-new-nikon-8k-camera I remember watching the 8K demo. If it wasn’t a Nikon curious what else could have shot it in ProRes RAW 8K.
  19. @DaveAltizer I just watched your video earlier too and enjoyed the rant ha. I picked up an EOS-R, A7III, X-T3, and just now a Z6 just to compare for myself. And I’ll be damned if EOS-R doesn’t have some mojo. It doesn’t make any sense on paper but as you, @DBounce and others have said, there is something satisfying about the image. And it’s not just color as I’m shooting monochrome video. It just somehow looks closer to vision I have my head. Even the X-T3 I found to look nice, but somehow more sterile and less vibey ha ha. And that was with both F-log and Acros and trying to match the rich monochrome look I can get out of the Canon. Still I’m very interested to see what the raw Z6 image will look like.
  20. Re: ProRes RAW adoption, Jeromy at Atomos seemed to indicate that part of the slow adoption was that they hadn’t built the SDK needed for 3rd party implementations yet. Apparently that is being worked on now though so I’m hoping it gets wider adoption soon.
  21. Well, really I think 24 will be fine so I’m good with the limitation. I never use 30/29.98 but was just really surprised you couldn’t use the 23.98. It just seemed rather arbitrary, but as I’ve used Sony’s and Panasonic’s I know every camera has sometimes baffling quirks that you just have to accept as part of their personality Yeah, agree it’s a shame on the FHD 8-bit. My intention was to record direct to a LUT on the Ninja V for extra quick turn around on YouTube or short social media stuff where I didn’t want to drop it into an NLE. One thing the EOS R DOES do that the A7 III and Z6 don’t, is you can record to HDMI while still having full face tracking AF and remote controlling the camera via Wi-Fi. The A7 III comes close, but disables face tracking, and the Z6 just flat out won’t allow remote control with HDMI output. I have a hunch the S1 might allow this combination too, but need to verify.
  22. So I just got an EOS R and can confirm that, as ridiculous as it sounds, when you hook up HDMI to a Ninja V, and have the EOS R set to 1080p, the frame rate stays locked at 59.94 FPS no matter what you set it to internally. The one exception is if you enable 24 FPS which does change the HDMI output. Note that this is true 24 FPS and not 23.98. 4K doesn’t have this limitation and I can’t understand why FHD does. ?‍♂️
  23. A user on Dvxuser stated that the EOS R only would 60i or p in 1080p over HDMI. Can someone confirm if that’s true? Seems rather odd. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?362586-Canon-EOS-R-no-23-98-HD-from-HDMI-Out
  24. What is puzzling me is why no 24p in 1080? They have it in 4K but specs only list 25p for 1080. Edit: Actually I’m confused because the spec list on their site only lists 30p and 60p under frame rates but then in continuous recording time it shows 25p. Probably a typo.
