As Panasonic is throwing new cameras at us (GH5=$2000, GH5S=$2500, G9=$1700), it would seem that they've forgotten the lower budget that the GX80/85 (<$600) brought us. I really don't do anything that would warrant a budget upwards of $1500. I hope the DSLM doesn't just have a future like these expensive flagships Panasonic is offering. I share the opinion of the Drew Network when he was talking about the GH2... and moving to a GH3. I think something similar is happening now these newer Panasonic cameras concerning pricing. Drew is a funny guy... wish he made more videos. Anyway, here's where he speaks about that. Actually, a hacked GH2 is probably still an option.

What Micro Four Thirds lenses have linear focusing rings?
John Matthews replied to Inazuma's topic in Cameras
I believe it's due to the insanely small design of the lens and having to move a "large" front element whereas faster focussing MFT lenses move smaller elements inside the lens. I've heard it's a great lens though. -

Has anyone tried EOSHD Procolor with Cinelike D? -
Would You Perhaps Be Interested In A Different GX80/85 Colour Profile???
John Matthews replied to BTM_Pix's topic in Cameras
That's great! After setting one Custom setting to Cinelike V and the other to Cinelike D, you can make all the adjustments (Custom, Sharpness, NR, Saturation), save and still keep all the same settings on reboot. Nice, but stupid Panasonic didn't just include it if it's already there... probably taken out by some marketing dude to help sell more G80/GH5 units. Oh well, can't complain too much about the GX80, "the good enough/close enough" camera. It keeps getting better and better. Thanks BTM_Pix! -
Would You Perhaps Be Interested In A Different GX80/85 Colour Profile???
John Matthews replied to BTM_Pix's topic in Cameras
So this is really cool! Great work. I did some tests this morning. My question now is: what are the other settings in the profile in terms of contrast, sharpness, NR, and saturation? Can't seem to find that information. -
I haven't messed too much with the highlights and shadows. IMO, when shooting 4k, you've got a lot to play with. With settings, I'll say it depends mainly on your liking. I CAN tell you they can mess up the image in some situations- notably, contrast at -5 in soft light will not do justice to some people's skin. I did that once. After learning that, I don't fidget too much anymore. Mine are -2, -5, -5, 0 and nothing to the highlights and shadows. Also, I use AWB. The G85 seems like a great camera, but I'd still prefer the GX80 due to size. Panasonic actually moved the strap mounts further forward from the GX7 (on the right side). This was a major improvement. Still, I'd rather have an inset strap mount, flush with rest. "Useless" is a strong word, but you're right that I'd say this camera was made for smaller lens/camera combos. There aren't any adapters out there to raise the body off the attachment plate that don't protrude under the lens mount?

Hackers inject Mac virus into Handbrake Video Encoder
John Matthews replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Edited. Thanks. I don't believe that's how this particular Trojan works though. This is more of the spying type. -
Hackers inject Mac virus into Handbrake Video Encoder
John Matthews replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I'm willing to bet that most mac people had handbrake already, and they would have upgraded via the in-app upgrade which is not affected. If you downloaded it as a clean install, there's a 50% chance you got it. If it were me, I'd wipe the drive, reinstall everything, restore from backed-up data (this depends on how you configured your backup process). Once your system is compromised, there's no going back IMO. -
I'm still quite happy with my GX80 and I won't be selling it anytime soon. It's taking great photos and videos. I could mention some negatives, but the fact of the matter is that this camera is good enough. I couple it with the ZOOM H1 positioned close to the subject and I've found it an impressive match for many systems... still state of the art in 2017.

Interesting specs, but this is the camera for the rich at 5300 Euros. The A9 II will come out in just 9 months, tumbling the price of this one. I'll just stick with my GX80... good enough for stills and video and un-matched value! Period.

IMO go with the GX80 + lens option. My thinking is for 3 reasons: 1) the FZ330, FZ1000, FZ2000 don't have real 4k options for wide angles, something that's important with street protests. 2) the next time you buy a camera you'll be able to use the lens which means a cheaper ownership. 3) if your needs change, the GX80 will change with them and do low-light as well. Hope that helps.

Alright. So here's my goal. I would like to archive 300 edited, high-quality photos (good enough for HQ printing at 8 x 10) and 30 minutes of edited, high-quality 1080p video. I would like this to be put on a 4.7gb M-disc for long-term data storage, but I guess I could go for 25gb Blue-ray M-discs if absolutely necessary. What would you recommend for doing this in terms of codecs? By my calculations, 300 8-megapixel jpeg's at 100% compression is about 1.3gb. That leaves 3.4gb for the video or 30 minutes of 1080p at 15 mbps in h.264 and in a mp4 wrapper. Much of the source material is 1080p or 4k and raw for photos. Given that "preserving the content" would be the priority, does this make any sense to anyone and do you have experience with archiving this way? Just looking for input.

Hmm... what options are you talking about? Have you made sure that it's actually on? I don't have that lens, but I'd be surprised that Panasonic would degrade its IBIS. Also, you might try disconnecting the lens and putting it back on... Did you also make sure your firmware for the lens is up-to-date?... just some thoughts...

Just thought I'd let people know that there's a new firmware available: version 1.2. It can be found here: http://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/dl/gx80_gx85.html I just did it and it seems to work so far- so that's good. It says the fixes were: Reduced operation noise during the shooting standby or the motion picture recording. Fixed a problem that camera fails to connect to the Picmate server. I'll be testing it soon.
