  1. Possibly, I certainly know alot of people who hoped for that with Scarlet though. Clients weren't asking for RED, they were asking for Epic. As you say though, that can be country/region and industry specific. The vast majority were actually asking for Alexa or C300 though, so I wouldn't rule out the pull of Canon. In fact, I assume the Raven is a direct response to the C300 II.
  2. Agree with most of that except for the name part. A client who knows of the name RED will very likely also know that there is Epic/Weapon and Scarlet/Raven. As alot of early Scarlet adopters quickly found out, just owing a RED was not enough... It had to be the top end RED to get the next level of bookings. Obviously it shouldn't be like that, but that is life if you want to chase clients who might be swayed by brands and names.
  3. Yea, your line of work seems perfectly suited for a RED. Interested to see which choice you make as I have a feeling i'll be weighing up the same options (still sorely tempted with the C300II though).
  4. I do think anyone who goes from, say, Sony to RED will be very surprised at the lack of low light and resolution detail (at 4K). The latest "standard" OLPF might help, but it will not work miracles (like the promised 20,000 ISO). As I have maintained, it is looking exciting, but I would certainly hold back on the buy now button until you have at least rented a Dragon and seen the beauty AND limitations of the footage.
  5. From what I have read at REDuser, the thinking is that these sensors are a quarter cut of the 8K sensor... If that is the case, then 4K will be the max. If true, it is a concern, as RED is quite soft (compared to BM with no OLFP)
  6. Pro Res might be the deal breaker... Have RED confirmed that it will be REDcode only?
  7. Both companies are a bit "excitable" when it comes to announcing paper specs. In terms of IQ, my guess is: BM will have more detail (4.6K and no OLPF). Both will have similar DR (13-14 stops usable). RED will have better aliasing/moire and rolling shutter. Low light will be fairly low on both, unless RED has nailed it with their latest OLPF Both have good colour. RED has better highlight protection (though again, the new OLPF could change that).
  8. My biggest issue is the quality of the 4K it outputs. The OLFP on the MX made the footage incredibly soft... even 5K downscaled, with alot of sharpening, was still found lacking. I have not used Dragon or the new OLFPs though, so maybe something has changed. Low light is also a concern. Generally though, seems like a very exciting camera.

  10. God, I hate their design style... Not enough to put me off, but that whole military thing is so crude and dated.
  11. Possibly, although the FS700 has had 4K/120fps raw (60fps continuous) for a while now. I'm unsure of RED ever want to publicly challenge Sony, as Sony also push spec boundaries pretty hard. RED tend to pick their battles with Canon, as they can build hype via the paper specs, knowing Canon will never push any boundaries. I think this has everything to do with the C300 mkII starting to get reviews and footage to back up their 15 stops claim. Maybe they know some inside info about a C500 mk II or something... Just have a feeling this is all about Canon. Arri are more or less untouchable, the next level down could well be between Canon and RED
  12. It's a very strange hashtag to be throwing about. The most vocal part of the industry (online, at least) seems to be the people who want the most, for the least money.... Getting the hopes of this section of the market up has already burnt them once. Hashtag aside.... I imagine the price for a basic setup will go directly up against the C300 mk II though, much like Scarlet did with the C300.
  13. Interesting stuff, just cannot see any way this will be "4K4All" .... I think RED have set themselves up for another 3k for $3K moment, when you consider the "4K4All" that Lumix and Samsung (Sony and Blackmagic too, to a lesser extent) are offering.
  14. Will be interesting if it does come in at that sort of price... The Ursa Mini will be similar, when kitted out. I wonder where they will cut the specs though? Old MX sensor? 30fps only at 4K? Heavier compression? No RedCode? My completely uneducated guess, it will be a 6K Dragon sensor, but will downscale to 4K (1-30fps) and 2K (1-120fps), with no 5K or 6K options, minimal I\Os, no ProRes etc.
  15. Nothing about that looks cheap/budget. Can't see a shooting package coming in any less than $10k (probably about the same as Ursa Mini, when totalled up). RED usually start the hype machine when they know something is about to drop from a competitor. Either they over estimated what the FS5 would be, or something is brewing elsewhere (or maybe they know the 4.6K mini/C300 mk II footage is gonna blow everyone away).

  19. Wow, this could be amazing. They already have log on the current camera and it performs well, considering the sensor size. This could be a game changer.
  20. This is why I find the negativity about this very odd... The camera will clearly be a beast of a 2k/4k camera, with 8K as an external option.. (much like 4K is with the C500). Just because it can do 8K doesn't mean it only does 8K.... It will likely be a very, very exciting 4K camera, with HS options not offered on the C300 II.

  22. Not really understanding the negativity on this announcement. Can only assume the Canon name, coupled with the likely high cost. Worth remembering though, if the flagship C500 II is 8K/60fps then the lower models have room to move up a level without threatening the flagship, eg 4K/24fps and 1080/120fps Probably good news all around.
  23. I have read a few articles that suggest 4K might get passed by, on a consumer level, and 8K will be the key upgrade... It could allow things like entire walls to be used as a screen, or pixel perfect virtual windows (ala Total Recall). Anyway, it is just another option, and an interesting move by Canon.
