One could almost suspect Sony (and Pana, for that matter) are implementing these improvements to make us buy their lenses. It's as if ACME had invented the best can opener ever, but only for their own cans. The beans - or whatever - had to be ACME beans as well. Genius!

To be fair, Sony have been producing the best cameras for adapted non-Sony lenses for several years, unlike pretty much any other manufacturer, certainly in the full frame market.

  2. Speedboosters, adaptors, fast manual primes etc are available for both platforms to compensate for smaller sensors. Unfortunately the fact that the video AF on the A6500 is looking so useable means that native lenses are suddenly looking more "essential". A good problem to have I suppose.

    Bro.

Panny 7-14mm f4 can be had for under $500.

Sony 10-18mm f4 is around $600. It does have oss though and takes screw on filters.

Panny 12-35mm f2.8 can be had for $500

Sony: no f2.8 standard apsc lens. But you can buy the FE GM 24-70mm for $1,800

Panny 35-100mm can be had for $600

Sony: no equivalent but you can use the new 70-200mm f2.8 for $2,600...

The only other "comparable" lenses are the sony 18-105mm f4 for $500 which is a stop slower and the Zeiss one (forgot specs) that is closer to $1,000.

Panny Trinity is under $2k USD used on eBay if you scrounge for deals - for f2.8 zooms! Small and lightweight.  Admittedly the 35-100 stabilizer is shit for video but the IQ is fine.

Sony lineup has nothing close and you have to use the heavy and crazy expensive full frame lenses for f2.8... Currently the 10-18 24-70 and 70-200 would be just under $5k... And heavy and large.

$3k vs $5k. Is that a "fair" comparison? Maybe not, but we have no choice since Sony has no comparable lenses!

Sony is boatloads more expensive.  Whether it's worth it or not is up to you.  The GM 70-200 f2.8 looks pretty sweet since I think they said it was parfocal.  The 24-70 I'm disappointed has no built in oss.  I really like the 5 axis dual is on the 18-105 a6500 combo.  Haven't really been overly impressed with ibis and adapted lenses.

No way Sony is cheaper!  When have they ever been cheaper?!  It's Sony!

Given the shallower DOF and better low light on APS-C you really have to compare an F2.8 lens on µ4/3 with F4 lenses on Sony. The smaller the sensor the easier it is to build f2.8 lenses, so naturally they will be cheaper.

Hey guys, I put together a behind the scenes video about how I film my travel videos for clients. I have been posting a few of them lately and I plan to post one every week or so. Let me know if you have any questions or comments and please subscribe if you like it! :)

Lovely combo. Even the slow-mo footage doesn't look too bad at 4K.
Looking at the Sony options now, I would wait to see if the A7iii comes out soon. If they match the A6500 for full sensor 6K downsample and AF, then it might be the best FF option yet, except in very low light. The A6500 is very tempting with a focal reducer, but the 28mm f2 is a very attractive option full frame, and if you add in good native AF performance then it could be the gimbal option of choice.

Maybe after getting A6500 I will hate it, who knows...  The RS is horribad and the 1080p is stupidly soft compared to the 4K, as well as the heat issues and color.  If they only fixed those 4 things and charged a bit more no one would complain.  But I guess then the camera would be "too good".

Don't hold your breath. It's mostly down to the form factor. Maybe the 1080p can be improved, though my guess it is a 3K lineskipped image down sampled, and if they crisped it up the lineskipping might give artefacts. No one else fits so much functionality into such a small body. The "solution" is to get an A7Rii and use it in crop mode. The 6K sensor readout is going to be slow, until we get next-generation processing on to it.

  6. If you have stabilised lenses or shoot only stills, then the A6300 is a better value option. Remember people buying these cameras mostly for video are still a small part of the market, which is why there are a lot of compromises on the form factor and interface for folk who shoot video professionally.
Still, if your shooting style allows you to work round the limitations, and you invest some time in your kit, there isn't much choice at this price point.

Even if the IS is not class leading, it does take a chunk out of the downside of the rolling shutter. For slow-mo 1080p footage (admittedly a bit soft), and even hand-held 4K shot with care, this is definitely a more useable camera for video without the cost and hassle of a gimbal.

Sony really needs to come up with a substantial touchscreen FW update - it works nice on a5100 and previous models, so they have no reason not to make it work as it should.

Probably a good idea to wait for the 1.1 version with Sony products, to actually assess their capabilities fully. The downside of offering so many features.

  8. SLR lenses get increasingly complex to design as they get wider - technically they are called retrofocus designs, as the focal length is greater than the distance from the film . Fast 50s are obviously easy, but fast wide-angles are always more of a challenge to design, which is why anything wider than 35mm, that is faster than f1.4 is significantly more expensive.

Fast mirrorless wide angles should be easier to design, though digital sensors can be tricky with rays hitting obliquely, so maybe there haven't been as many "rangefinder-style" small fast wide lenses as might have been expected.

I can say with certainty that's an impossibility if he keeps doing whatever it is he keeps doing.

BTW, not a joke, serious question, what happens when the dude doesn't have time to hop into the tanning booth every other day?  Do they go with the spray on?  Or maybe it's spray on already?  I'm not sure.

It may be a full face tattoo, in which case he is sorted. Anyway, you don't need to worry, that guy can do anything, including create time from nothing for tanning himself. And it's going to be beautiful.

Maybe it's time Busby Berkeley musicals make a come back and "Remember My Forgotten Man," gets dusted off.

Things could end up getting all Steinbeckian up in here.

Love all that stuff. Tough times can produce great culture. On balance, I would probably still rather live through boring times.

Canon 70D with dual-pixel AF or Canon 6500?  Touch screen to rack focus.

Do you mean the Sony A6500?
If you touch the screen lightly enough maybe you can change focus without shaking the camera

Isn't the auto focus same as A6300?

Couple of things: when the PDAF is on the sensor, sensor-based stabilisation is good for object tracking, especially at long FLs. This camera has some extra processing power, don't know if any of it goes to helping with AF though.

Demonstration of hybrid AF in 4K video of A6300 and A6500

Not the most challenging subject to shoot, in bright light. Let's see a small fast dog running towards the camera in low light...
I want to believe that the AF is excellent, but a lot of cameras could cope with shooting this.

https://goo.gl/kEa8S9 This is a very very nice but cheap lens. Nikkor 50mm 1.8 D

It's a fine cheapish lens, but best used on a Nikon AF camera. For adapted MF use, the focus ring action is not great, because of its lightweight plastic construction. Plenty of older 50mm f1.8 MF lenses from Nikon or other makers that have metal construction and more satisfying focus action.
Also note that this lens, and many with the D designation, will only autofocus on more expensive Nikon bodies, that have a body-focus motor. It is MF-only on D3XXX or D5XXX series cameras

To heavy Im afraid. Maybe my smallest s8 or an Olympus range finder I found at a fleemarket a few weeks back for some long exposures :)

Shame, a film camera could really use stabilisation. I remember the old days of holding my SLR against pillars or walls to try and steady long exposures in low light.
Get out your rangefinder and shoot off a roll! Love the tones from your expired chemicals.

    Disclaimer:
I did an experimental roll of Kodak Vision converted for C41 today. I seriously underexposed the iso800 film. I than let it sit waaay longer than it should in cold and very very old chemicals that I was planning on taking to the dump tomorrow. So, grainy and instagrami as f..ck.
I only had 5 frames left of the roll and was going to just let them go to waste when I saw the gimbal.
So here are a few very rough images :)

You really should have tried your film camera on the gimbal, pretty steampunk ;)

  16. At some point that 8K sensor in the A7Rii will evolve into an 8K video sensor. Possibly with full sensor readout down sampled to 4K. Could appear in an FS7 body, with 6K readout from the S35 crop. They didn't decide on that form factor without having some future plans for it. In a bigger body they may be able to boost the readout speed without frying the electronics.

  17. I was assuming that I would need a gimbal for use with an A6300, now the sensor stabilised A6500 has come out I might hold off a bit. The good thing is a small camera can work with a cheaper, more compact gimbal. I fully acknowledge that RS and overheating are serious problems for some shooting styles, but the quality of the 4K image out of these cameras, and the potential for a speed boosted full frame image, makes it worth considering work arounds for the limitations surely?
