  1. Ok, I got mine.

    I don't think it will be of much use for video (at least not for a while yet).

    Fine for snaps and casual photography.

    Distorts with most lenses, seems to need brighter light than the lenses would on other cameras to auto focus..

    Hit or miss as to what lenses work.      No AF-C.      Will drain a battery pretty quick as it is always focusing if the camera is left on between shots.

    When they DO work, focus can be very fast.     Almost natively so.     It WILL be a great idea but it does need work.

    The adapter has a USB port so I would think a LOT of updates will be coming.

    I like it a lot but then I also like using Canon lenses to auto focus on an A7s.

    I got an its shipped notice from Ebay but then got another saying it will be a few more days.

    I am not skilled enough to evaluate it for video other than maybe something short and quick on YouTube.      For stills I surely will.

  3. Maybe I had a bad one. It was a hideous piece of glass. I'll try again. Is there any difference with the cine version (besides gears etc)? It's rather pricey!

    Nikon 14-24mm not an option after doing some research. 

    17mm is usually my ideal focal length on APS-C and 24mm on FF. Just love the look of truly epic wide compositions, especially for band shoots! 

    ​Try a Canon 17mm f4 L TS-E if you can for shooting bands.      This and the 24 3.5 ii L TS-E are my favourite lenses.      I mainly use them for stills but for video I just put them on a tripod (or table) on my A7s, plug in a Zoom H1 turn them on and let it run for a song.     I do prefer the 24 as there is a bit of distortion of faces at the edges with the 17.    Both are very nice lenses used normally and I often just shift them a fraction too.

    EDIT    Both are large and heavy and expensive though.    My 17 was used in great condition and came with a Cokin X-pro filter holder and polariser but I never bother with it.

    Always lusted over it when I shot with it on a 5D mark II back in the day, it made the soft 1080p 5D video look tack sharp! The aesthetic is crazy magical, best lens look I've ever seen, but only on FF, using it on APS-C would be a waste.. So I never bought it because Canon doesn't make fullfame cameras I can use for video. If this adapter makes it 100% with the other sony FFs then I might do it.

    ​I love the 135 f2 L more and more all the time.      Not for video, (for that I just use a couple of wide angle lenses mainly).    For stills though it has replaced my old Canon FD 85 1.2 l for the most part but I am waiting for the Zeiss Batis 85 1.8 for my A7s and A7.

    This adapter and the Batis 85 are about all I want now for gear as I think I am otherwise done for the next few years at least.

    I have a couple of combinations with the Sony A7s and A7 that are actually usable for AF.    135 f2 L in particular is usable for portraits as long as people are not moving their feet.

    On an A7s it works the same in really low light long after my Canon 7D has stopped with the same lens.

    To be able to use the one lens for usable AF on three systems is going to be fun.

    Usable AF FF for the 135 f2 L that is especially (and especially in low light) with the A7s but also A7 and for APSC too, very fast AF for APSC on the 7D and now usable AF for things like daytime sports at a 2x crop on my GX7.

    I would hope that they will make an adapter as fast for Sony soon too.

  6. A7 can be found cheap enough.    You can use lots of different mount lenses including old cheap manual focus ones with simple "dumb" adapters.

    While video is not what most users on this forum would like it is quite good for amateur use and even up to an ISO like 12800.

    The camera also has all the right video "tools" like peaking, zebras, tilting LCD, mic and headphones jacks.     it can do 50/60p at full hd.

    I am not sure if there are two versions of it though (world camera  that does both PAL/NTSC frame rates and NTSC only like there is with the A7s).

    I use my A7 for stills as my daytime camera and previously for video until I got the A7s.

    You can also use the cheap Sony live view grading app with the Sony cameras.

  7. It didn't say it was an A7rii, it simply said new A7 Series. The rest is pure speculation.

    But if speculation is the game there may yet be hope for a new A7s showing up as it was the most widely sold of all the A7 Series of camera:

    ​Given that it IS the most widely sold and is still selling well, and since it is newer than the A7R, why would the S get replaced first?

    If the S was up for replacement I would have thought NAB would have been the time to announce it rather than planned well in advance to release it shortly after.

    I am fairly sure there will be a new version of the S (or similar) but just  not next and maybe not for a while yet.       A7R makes more sense for Sony.

    A7s is still the best high ISO camera I think.      A7R is not necessarily the best high resolution stills camera and the coming 50mp Canons and rumours of similar Nikon and Sony high resolution cameras also indicate to me that the new A7 will be an R replacement especially since we already have the middle A7 in mk ii version,

  8. 1) I don't think they had any choice, it was not the first time so they are in a no win situation (lose money or lose reputation and show double standards).

    2) I expect the three of them to be on a commercial network soon and making an absolute mint

    3) Who ever takes him on should make him sign a ten year non compete clause as well as have clear guidelines about what is expected and what breaches will cost him.

    4) As soon as they DO start a new show, Top Gear will fold (unless they can come up with a team as good).

     

    EDIT.    If he has been given warning after warning, there HAS to be a point at which something is done otherwise, what is the point.    It would seem that point was reached.

  9. With the A7 series cameras you can have it set to use on the fly.

    I use the down button of the four way buttons set to it.

    It is basically just a virtually lossless variable digital zoom.

    You could set the down button to full digital zoom to and it would be the same as clear zoom up to 2x and above that is regarded as digital zoom.

    Some people think the two (IE digital zoom up to 2x and clear zoom which is only up to 2x) are different but I cant see how.

    In any event, it is sometimes useful in allowing APSC lenses to be used in FF mode.    Depending on the lens, you might need between 1.2x and 1.4x zoom to get rid of vignetting.

    One thing to note if doing this is that stabilization doesn't work while using it.

    Having it set to use on the fly also means you can (with great care) use a fast prime as a short zoom.    IE zoom a 85 1.2 in and out.

  10. I love WATCHING him/the show but I would hate to have to work with him (and even more so if he was my boss).

    The BBC is caught in a no win situation as they have laws to comply with and a duty of care to others working there.

    They are not going to win either way.      Lose a heap of money or allow him t do as he pleases!

    Maybe there are too many things PC these days but is it the BBCs fault?

    Maybe the best thing would be to have someone there to punch him out if he does to someone else and otherwise fine him a lot of money (enough for it to matter) for other things and payouts to anyone "injured".      He could pay the insurance premiums personally too.

    That way we get to see a great show and any consequences fall back on him.

  11. I have auto ISO set to either 25600 or 51200 with the A7s for stills and video.

    Probably 25600 max might be the best for a TV series except for maybe some shorter bits.   I am just an amateur stills shooter who dabbles in video though.

    I think I know the series.....

    EDIT    Actually it would be interesting to know what ISOs people do/have used a A7s at for television.

  12. I don't think the A7 is all that bad depending on what you use it for..      It also is a bit easier as well thanks to having mic and headphones inputs.

    I am still just dabbling in video and was happy with the a7 and up to ISO 12800 for stills and video (just recording songs on a tripod or table).

    The A7s is better for video and goes to much higher ISOs for stills and video as well but for a stills camera that does ok amateur video, the A7 is ok to me.

     

  13. Update on the Commlite adapter.

    It wont AF one of my(old) lenses that the Metabones IV will but it WILL AF with the 50 1.8ii that the Metabones doesn't!

    There are quite a few AF adapters for Canon EF on E mount and they all seem to have quirks and what works with what camera or lens is a bit of a lottery.

    AF is too slow for most purposes regardless though.

  14. My Commlite adapter does not even mount on my A7s for some reason (works fine on my A7).

    The Metabones IV works well on both.

    I have 5 EF mountlenses.

    50 1.8 II does not AF at all (as per Metabones site), old 20-35 2.8 L and 100-300 5.6 L are micro motor lenses that AF slowly (20-35 makes a great manual focus lens anyway), Manual focus TS-E 24 lens is really nice on A7 cameras.

    The 135 f2 L lens AF is useable in some instances for stills (even for people sometimes) but the lens also makes a very nice manual focus lens on A7 and A7s.

  15. I use my Canon 24 3.5 L TS-E ii on an A7 and now A7s for stills and video.      Video is for live bands to get all the band in shot.     I like to use just a little bit of shift.

    ​Yes you are right .       I used it for a video the other day but it was on a tripod so I never noticed just tried it now and it does not work for OSS.     Doesn't work on the A7 either.

    Oh well, it is such a tiny lens it doesn't really need it.

    At least with the little 50 1.8 the OSS works.

  17. One thing I'm surprised that more people aren't trying is Sony's own LA-EA4 A Mount to E Mount adapter.. in theory you could attach the Tamron 24-70 in Alpha mount to the A7S. I literally have seen no one try this.. but if the lens works at all I'm willing to bet it will be less buggy and cheaper overall than the Metabones.

    Of course you'd have to find a suitable stabilized alternative to the 70-200 as well (would have to be a Sigma or Tamron in this case).

    ​Actually that would be Sigma only for stabilized lenses as Tamron does not stabilize the Sony versions as the A mount cameras have IBIS.     There may be one or two but I am not aware of any.     Anyone know of any Sony mount stabilized Tamrons?

  18. I have an A7 and A7s.

    For my amateur video I think the a7 is ok.    Most of the people on this forum would want better but will do more with video than most people and spend longer in post than most.

       I would think if some of the more experienced users on this forum tried an A7 they could get some quite lovely results in many cases.     There probably are some types of video that might not suit it but for others it may be ok.

    To me, it is has ok video quality but with lots of things to make it easier to shoot (like peaking and magnification and zebras and mic and headphones jacks).    The sound is actually very good I think with a mic on the hotshoe.    Having APSC mode available is also a bonus.

    As a stills camera, well up to ISO 6400 it is the best camera for my purposes I have used and ok at 12800 too and for a full frame digital interchangeable lens camera with an EVF there is not much choice besides it.      It is also very adaptable being able to use A mount and EF mount lenses with great compatibility.   If you buy new from authorised sellers in some areas you can get a free EF mount Metabones IV or A mount LA-EA4 adapter by redemption.

  19. What settings for an A7s if I am not grading?     

      I am an amateur stills photographer, especially live music.      Shooting stills has got me the best seat in the house many times for many years for free.    I have started doing video of shows (just one or two songs), previously with a Pentax KX (not great for video and overheated after a couple of minutes).      The original A7 has been good enough for my uses IE camera on a table or tripod, all the band in shot and let run.      In time, I would love to get a live music video on TV but for now it is just for fun with video on You Tube or Facebook.     Mostly so far it is covers so no one will get to see the video (occasionally I might put something on Youtube and hope they just run an ad on it).

    I like using the camera in full frame mode and APSC mode for video (APSC mode means I can use the cheap 16-50 and 50 1.8 OSS lenses that I like) FF mode and I like to use my Canon 24 3.5 TS-E ii or if I have room my Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 for bands.  

       Now that I have an A7s, while I am not going to get the best out of it doing what I do (and I don't care about skin tones as under most of the lighting I shoot, skin never looks natural anyway), I still want to get as good as I can for now (sound via a Zoom H1 on the hotshoe plugged into the camera).     Hence my question about what settings I should use/try.

    Down the track, I am hoping there will be cheap 4k recorders without all the bells and whistles that I can just plug into the camera to record with still using the LCD (or EVF) of the camera to monitor it.

    I love the A7s (and A7) and both are great for stills for me.     Video is the cream on top and something like an A7s I never would have even dreamed of five years ago.     A great camera, even for someone like me with a basic laptop for a computer, zero grading skills and no real need for such.

    EDIT, I will be happy giving the video to bands that may well have someone who will grade it but I would rather it was as good as I can get it as shot.
