    Blackmagic: a middle-gound...?

Firstly: apologies if this has been discussed here before (if so I've never read anything) but a thought just occurred to me.... At the moment Blackmagic has the Pocket Cinema Camera 4k at £1055 +VAT and the URSA Mini Pro at £4845+VAT with nothing in-between. What are the odds of them coming up with something in-between i.e. something a bit bigger than the Pocket with an APS-C/Super35 sensor but about £2500-£3000? Surely there are loads of people that want something a bit more than the pocket (ie a bigger sensor) and able to spend more but unable/unwilling to go for the URSA Mini: it would be a winner, no?

    I WILL be getting a Fuji X-T3!

They do but perhaps not for Canon EF, so you may be 1/2 right.

Hi - did they state whether this will be a 'dumb' or electronic mount? I ask because I have a bunch of C/Y mount Zeiss lenses, most of which have been adapted to Canon EF mount but aren't electronic but I've found that most of the lens mount adapters are electronic which is a feature for which I'd be paying but not deriving any benefit (unless I used normal Canon EF glass of course).
  4. Good stuff and lovely pics @Andrew Reid - I think there may be a typo on the second line though. Where you say "Until now my two favourite lenses for 4K video" did you mean cameras? Looking forward to seeing some video footage from the Z7.

    Blackmagic: a middle-gound...?

Well I suppose the argument against the type of camera I have proposed would be that it would potentially cannibalise sales of the URSA Mini but I'd argue that it wouldn't because it would be for people that wouldn't/couldn't justify/afford an URSA Mini Pro to begin with. Steve Jobs once said something like "If you don't cannibalise yourself, someone else will" but that seems to be the mindset with many of these companies now.

I am leaving Vimeo over their scandalous DMCA policy

This really is a lamentable move by Vimeo. I've had a Plus account for a few years but this story reminded me to switch off the auto-renew.
  7. ....Which is why I'd not consider a camera until it's had a thorough examination by you, Andrew. All these vids on YouTube are all well and good but too many of them are beholden to the manufacturers.

Shame it can't do 4:2:2 internally (as per the GH5/GH5s) but that aside, this looks an intriguing option. Hopefully we'll see the usual no-holds-barred, super-thorough Reid Review asap 🙂

Why YouTuber Logan Paul can't put his camera down

I'd never heard of this bloke until this recent controversy and have no intention of looking at any of his content, neither.

    Standing Tall

Here's a short film I completed in May 2016: it's about a building that has managed to survive decades of (over) development in central Cardiff:

    Leica Gear (SL + Lenses)

I wouldn't worry about it. No-one ever seems to buy anything on here anyhow, we just seem to advertise stuff and talk about it Good luck selling it (probably elsewhere!)

New Zeiss 28-85 3.3-4.0 Contax lens

As a matter of interest, what other Contax Zeiss lenses do you have (that you'd be willing to sell)?
  14. Here's a 2 minute little 'vignette' done about 4 years ago (shot on a GH2) and here's something done way back in 2009, a faux film trailer:

Don't you mean "Egypt" what with you being a Pharoah n' all....

    Kinefinity Terra 4k has landed

It'll be really interesting to see how these go as they're an intriguing prospect. I like the fact that you can change the lens mount and would be interested to see how robust/reliable that aspect of it is, too.

    Kinefinity Terra 4k has landed

I seem to remember a lot of chat about these Kinefinity cameras: many interested alas many people a little hesitant to go for what seems such an unknown quantity (compared with all the usual suspects of manufacturers) so I salute you for taking the plunge
  18. In excellent, little used condition, complete with box, pouch etc. This is fitted with the high quality Leitax lens-mount adapter so it's good for a rock-solid fit to Canon EF mount cameras although this can be removed if you want to take it back to its original Contax/Yashica (C/Y) mount. £230GBP. I can add/supply some pictures if there's any interest....

How to save the consumer camera: DON'T!

I did say I think usability should be improved wherever possible (many of the things you mention above would definitely fall into that) and I agree about Canon's intentional crippling. However, I think chasing the 'yoof' market i.e. uploading straight to Snapchat/Zuckerbook/Instagram IS dumbing down as those things are faddish/ ephemeral and besides which, will make zero difference for the very reasons I outlined in my original post.

How to save the consumer camera: DON'T!

Excellent article, Andrew and I find myself agreeing with you rather than Tony Northrup. Then again, I'm not sure how much Tony Northrup really agrees with Tony Northrup: his video smacks of being one to pull in an audience with a headline-grabbing title... Sure, I'm all for improving usability wherever possible but proper photography and "hey, look at my friends having lolz tonite" pictures on social media are two different things. There really is no point trying to make cameras operate exactly like mobile phones because for the vast majority of people, it wouldn't make any difference: they'd always opt for the phone and the phone-alone because it's 'good enough' and the extra performance of the dedicated camera just doesn't warrant the cost/size etc. Ultimately, if people are genuinely interested in photography they'll move up to a 'proper camera' and learn to use it. I don't subscribe to this dumb-down/ race-to-the-bottom mindset that says we should gear everything toward the people that have grown up in the smartphone/iPad era.

    RAW vs 10bit vs 8bit

Interesting vid from Dave Dugdale and Matt Scott. I have a feeling Matt's comments and conclusions will wind up a few people here
