  1. I think that is a bit of a harsh conclusion to come to. IBIS is not going to fix jerky movements. (there are limits to how much the sensor can shift (or lens in OIS lenses). Get a stabilizer for moving shots. Secondly, since this is a very wide lens, there is clearly some distraction from the distortion that is happening. I haven't tested the EM-1 myself, but if Andrew is saying the video is good, I take his word for it. I'm more concerned about the recent discovery he made about the phase detection strips showing up in footage...

i have seen a lot of videos with em1 and internal IS and if there is any camera movement is UGLY ... see for youself.

    '>

And this is with wide angle lens!

The only time i would use the internal IS , would be only for static themes and there i could use my monopod with my A7 and RX10.

Its not very professional looking at all the results in video of EM1's stabilization (elastic distortion) ... good only for small movements, nothing else.

Try it for example with oly 45mm 1.8 while you are walking... and you will see what i am saying!

also, as i remeber in video mode you CANT change everyrthing when you prees REC.

Is that enough for you ?

Focus peaking is laggy in video mode also , you cant change  the colour nor the intensity of it , not usable for me.

EM1 is very good camera for photos but not for video... please!

  2. Noone will release a firmware that allows only 10 seconds of 4K I think. I know about the V1 but it can only do that in raw image mode, no compression, no audio. You need to process and compress raw data for consumer 4K video. Even the better amateur filmmakers and even professionals suffer with raw workflow so that is clearly not an option for consumer 4K which we are talking about.

The device needs to be built with component intended for 4K.

on a side note; v1 does 1 sec at 30fps, or 60 fps for 0.5 secs.

edit: sorry looks like fuzzy normal already mentioned v1 recording time.
  3. Hi,

Final call, I'll sell these items on ebay pretty shortly.

I am finally ready to give up my Konica Minolta / Sony Alpha ties.. The following lenses are thus for sale (or in various combinations for trade (unlike sale, trades are only in person, Chicago area), in return for Oly 45mm 1.8, Oly 75mm 1.8, Pana 35-100 2.8 - more info below!). I will provide more detail by each lens, but in general, I have tried to set the prices very fairly. I prefer to sell/trade them to people in this community, rather than putting them up on one of the auction sites.. I have tried to include plenty of pictures, but this is the first time photographing equipment, so if you want me to provide better pictures, etc, please feel free to contact me.

Lens #1 - Tamron AF 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 SP Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Sony Minolta AF Digital SLR Cameras
Price: $320 - REDUCED to $300 including shipping CONUS
Notes: Comes with front/rear cap and lens hood
Condition: Overall very good condition, but appears to have a very small cleaning mark(?) on the front element. (looks like in the coating). It is so small I could not get it to show up in pictures of the lens, and it is not visible when using the lens as far as I can tell. It has probably been used less than a dozen times total.

Lens #2 - Tokina AT-X PRO 28-70mm f2.8 for sony minolta α AF (Full Frame compatible)
Price: $275 - REDUCED to $255 including shipping CONUS

Notes: Comes with front/rear cap and lens hood. This lens is regarded quite highly especially considering the price (which is why I bought it). user rating at dyxum is average 4.59 where 5.00 is max.
Condition: Very well built lens, overall very good condition for age. Some very minor cosmetic imperfections on the barrel, and what appears to be a cleaning mark on the rear element (again, looks like in the coating). Also hard to get to show up in pictures. Again, I have not been able to see any problems when using this lens. Probably my favorite lens of the bunch. For the years I owned it, it has been safely stored when not in use.

    Lens #3 - Tokina 100-300mm F4 AT-X 340 AF-II (Full Frame compatible)
Price: $325 - REDUCED to $305 including shipping CONUS

Notes: Comes with front/rear cap and lens hood. This lens is regarded very highly especially considering the price (which is why I bought it). user rating at dyxum is average a whopping 4.88 where 5.00 is max.
Condition: Very well built, overall very good condition for age. Some very minor cosmetic imperfections on the barrel from normal use. Optics look great as far as I can tell. For the years I owned it, it has been safely stored when not in use. One thing to note; I have only used AF with this on the Minolta 5D and occasionally it would hunt excessively for focus. I believe this is a common trait (not fault) of these zooms, and may have been more noticeable on my lower end camera, than on other cameras as well.

Bonus: If anyone buys two or all three of the lenses, I will throw in my trusted old Konica Minolta 5D dslr with 18-70 kit lens. It has seen some use and cosmetically only in ok to good shape, but works well. It was pretty much the last dslr that Konica Minolta made, so while it has IBIS (which is a neat feature), there is no live-view or video-recording. Still if you have someone in the family who wants to start taking pictures, or as a second/third camera, it's definitely nice. Also comes with a Extreme III 2GB compactflash, extra battery, neck band and lens cap. As, mentioned, free if you buy 2 or 3 lenses!

    Last item: Panasonic HDC-SX5P/PC camcorder.
    Price: $100 including shipping CONUS
Notes: 1080i video recording to sdcards or mini-dvd. Comes with battery, charger and manual (plus possibly other accessories like av-cables).
Condition: I would have to say this is in excellent condition. Probably used only a 10-15 times and stored carefully in between.

    Additional
    -Either Sale or Trade.
-Sale - Open to Reasonable offers. If you live in Chicago area and can meet+pay cash, we can definitely figure out a discount
-Trade only in person, Chicago-area, as I am not sure of a good way to do this remotely.
    -Trade options:
---1 (one) of my lenses for a (preferably black) Olympus 45mm 1.8 mft mount prime
---2 (two) of my lenses for a (preferably black) Olympus 75mm 1.8 mft mount prime
---ALL of the equipment listed (3 lenses, camera, camcorder) for a Panasonic pro 35-100mm 2.8 mft zoom.
(No other trades are of interest).

  4. Well, they only say 4K/30p so no hope for 60p. (would have been surprised if they did that anyway). Hope they can at least bump 1080 rez to 120P. Good codecs but no mention of built in raw though..

  5. The 14-140 is supposed to have pretty good stabilization, which I think is a must with the gh3 anyway (for your purpose). While you can get sharper images with other lenses (any 10x zoom has some compromises), this should be far less of an issue for video than for stills.  Since it is panasonic as well, I expect the gh3 would be able to fix some of the distortion in camera (panasonic tends to do this with pana lenses really well, olympus does it really well with their own lenses etc). It is also pretty silent in operation, which is important for video.

The two cons I see is; lack of weather-sealing. I know some people advocate that it is most important the camera has it, but personally, I would be more comfortable with both being weather-sealed. That said, I'm the one that brought up weather-sealing. If you will almost exclusively shoot from within a car, not really a can that it lacks that.

The second con is that it is a rather "slow" lens, especially zoomed in (f4 wide, f5.8 at some point in the zoom range, don't know when). This means the ISO will go up depending on the lighting, could introduce grain.

All in all though, I think this could work well. Just make sure you try out the lens quickly to see it fits your needs (low light), so worst case, you can return it.

  6. Looks like you have done some research, any reason why the gh3 is not on the list? While I personally prefer primes, the gh3 with their higher end pana zooms, I believe you have a weather-sealed solution. Since those lenses have OSS, might be good in your line of filming as well. You can run 50mbps or 72mbps, which would give very few artifacts in most situations (though I can't say for stormchasing - guessing pretty crazy amount of stuff moving around in the frame..). The gh3+ one of their lenses should put you pretty close to your budget at this point.

  7. I agree with the other responses. 5d3 with high bitrate, gh3 at 50mbps are the best choices if you don't want raw. I have nex 5n and the video quality on that compared to gh3 is no contest (gh3 wins easily)

  8. Andrew, thanks for all your work this year, and the fashion you run this site, compared to some others ;)

I wouldn't have thought some simple contrast overlay would be impossible to implement in firmware but I am certainly not an engineer in that area :) well, maybe they could open up the bitrates more even though they ate already industry-leading. Too bad we don't have a magic lantern equivalent.. There has been no progress on Nex or GH3, so the current unofficial "support" is iffy at best..

I do have an external monitor but partly why I chose m43 was to have a more compact setup, especially when used for taking pictures.

  9. Generally, variable density filters are discouraged due to lesser PQ, and risk of the "cross/x effect" if you use it at it's most extreme. However, obviously it can be very useful in a setting where lighting changes quickly. Here is an article you can check out;

    http://www.learningdslrvideo.com/variable-nd-filter-shootout/

I'm sure there are similar shoot-outs for regular nd filters as well.

I'd be careful at saying "best brands". Prices vary wildly. You can pay from $10 to hundreds for a single filter, it depends on how much you are willing to spend but B+W makes good filters for sure. Usually keep in mind how expensive your lens is. If you spend $1000 on a lens, do you want to only spend $10 on a piece of glass in front of it?

  10. Well, if you are planning on selling the BMCC,your timing isn't great, since as I'm sure you know, they can be bought new for $2K now. I'm not so sure your options in the end are that evenly priced, especially since you are talking about buying recorders (which in turns probably means you have to buy a harddrive array anyway), or speedboosters (that alone for the FS100 is, what, $600?)

Ok, so I am very biased, but have you considered the Panasonic GH3? Last I heard, there will be a m43 to Canon speedbooster coming this fall as well. If you use the 50mbit codecs that come with it, the quality is really good, and still far less space-consuming than raw. Pretty good audio capabilities with mic+headphone jack. I prefer to run a xlr into a recorder and then to the camera, and the quality has been good enough so far that I have not felt the need to sync with the recorder-audio in post.

Also, I actually just bought a fujinon a14x8.5  8.5-119mm mm (with 2x extender built in), with a b4 mount to m43 adapter. Feels like it will be really nice for run-and-gun stuff.

  11. My vote is GH3. Best out of the box video capabilities and quality. They have made great strides in photo quality as well, and includes loads of features. Don't also forget that m43 is great for adapting all sorts of lenses, whether it is canon, nikon, minolta lenses, to loads of more "exotic" lenses, including s16, b4 (fast tv lenses that can sometimes be had very cheap).

And nobody knows what goodies will be added to the list once it is hacked.

  12. No but it makes it lower quality, because there are fewer photons countable per shutter cycle. Not to mention losing the DR and anti-aliasing benefits of downsampling if you have a native res sensor or crop. And again it makes the DoF deeper.

The whole "sex appeal" of the wide aperture lens is that it will make image quality better (vs. cranking ISO) and DoF shallower. This is brought most to fruition on larger sensors. The inherent tradeoffs on smaller sensors mean that while you can have cheap and light lenses with huge apertures like 0.95 the image quality you can get out of the system will not be comparable to what you can get on a same-generation larger sensor with an aperture of f/2.8 or even narrower. And I'm ignoring a lot of the problems presented by smaller lens design in terms of CA and distortion etc...note how MFT lenses, even quite expensive ones, perform pretty terribly without the in-camera correction tech. Most FF shooters don't use in-camera correction tech because their lenses don't need it.

And coming all the way back round to topic, is there any word yet whether the BMD Pocket camera supports the in-camera image correction (CA, distortion, vignetting) technology that the Panasonic and Olympus MFT cameras do? Because if it doesn't, then the lenses you have to choose from for the native mount are rather dismal performers. Of course I take it this crowd is mainly wanting to adapt flea market finds whose flaws are "character."

While there is something to this, do you mean bigger is always better? If you feel so, the only good choice that I know of for filming would be the 5D mk3? Cameras like even the C100 have much smaller sensors for instance.
