65mm Panavision Kenneth Branagh "Murder on the Orient Express"
jonpais replied to Aussie Ash's topic in Cameras
Since ALEXA's entry into the film industry, every film to have won the Oscar® for Cinematography has been shot with the camera system. This year 80% of the films nominated in the Cinematography category were captured with ALEXA, as were 80% in the Visual Effects, 63% in the Best Picture and 60% in the Foreign Language Film categories. http://www.arri.com/news/news/arri-at-the-oscarsR/ -
you're right, Glenn. here are the 192,000 results I got searching YT.

The files can be imported into FCP X and transcoded; using an external recorder, you can view the Pro Res files immediately without additional transcoding; or use Edit Ready. To the best of my knowledge, most working professionals transcode their clips before editing, so I don't see what the problem is.

hahah... that's why I didn't bother looking - I've got no interest in signing up. -

So would you agree, Tim, that there are commonly accepted measures of image quality - dynamic range, moire, aliasing, bokeh, sharpening, color saturation, color accuracy, noise, contrast, barrel and pincushion distortion, chromatic aberration, artifacts, skin tones, etc. - and that everything is not entirely relative? If so, many, if not most, aspects of image quality are indeed quantifiable, and specs do mean jack. 50 lpmm, 800 nits, 28 Mbps, HLG, 540p, 8 bit 4:2:0, log, 60 CRI, 42% vignetting and on and on - all of these specifications have meaning for me. -

That is simply incredible - colors are spot-on, exposure too - it almost feels as if I'm right there... the detail and 3D pop are unmatched... now I regret ever letting go of my Pentax... -
Totally, absolutely, ridiculous post. Welcome to the forums, Lorian!

Everyone says the 10 bit Long GOP files are unplayable, but once they're transcoded to Pro Res, they play smoothly. I don't get what the fuss is all about. it's a brand new camera, it shouldn't require any cleaning. i'm almost certain it's just the cheap batteries he's using.

@jase A few months back, I believe you said you were looking for a 10 or 10.5mm lens - if you ever get the GH5, you can use ETC mode and get 10.5mm from the Laowa 7.5mm f/2.

I remember the department head of photography at my college inviting me over to show off his digital printing set up and thinking how dreadful using computers to make images was... but I was wrong about the iPhone too! -

My only experience shooting larger formats has been with film - a 4X5 view camera, a Pentax 645 and a Rollieflex. -

Image quality is not completely subjective. -
Glad I just renewed my visa for another year then! Five years in Vietnam, not once pulled over by the police.

The Laowa 7.5mm f/2. An overlong, rambling video in which I hardly talk about the lens at all.

Bad for criminals, more convenient than memorizing and typing secure passwords for the rest of mankind. The mere fact that law enforcement officers attempting to unlock a phone makes headline news shows just how uncommon the practice is, though that may change in the future.

Radio 88, shot with the EVA1, along with two other shorts, will be live Friday or Saturday. The DP says the image quality is virtually indistinguishable from that of the Varicam. source

Shooting 5K on the Panasonic GH5 with the new 'Open Gate' mode
jonpais replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Agree with fuzzy normal, but I could add that, although I've never seen an HDR panel, I have a suspicion that viewing a video shot in HLG with the GH5 on a 55" screen would blow away my X-T2. -
I simply refuse to watch Vimeo - it takes hours buffering. Never had a problem with YT.

@cojocaru27 This may not really answer your question, but there are a whole lot of things the GH5 offers - 4K 60p, anamorphic mode, dual card slots, a vast selection of lenses, including the Noktons and Veydras, ETC, IBIS, the ability to preview LUTs in camera - that can either affect the final result, increase flexibilty, convenience and reliability, enable you to visualize the image or just make shooting easier. I've never shot with the NX1, but I do own the X-T2: and even though I prefer the APS-C sensor, it stays at home for some of those very reasons. -

Why not buy it, try it out, and if you're not happy, send it back?
