  1. what i mean by resolution is effective resolution, i remember canon 1080p having less visible resolution than gh3 in 720p. sure but rolling shutter only show up on quick pan or fast moving objects, which must be 5% of the time but low texture details shows up on every single frame
  2. yes nx1 was the move of a company that had no camera lineup to protect so they delivered all they could in a single camera. i had to return my nx1 because of the many software bugs, i really hope samsung delivers a nx2 FF camera at $2000 price point, i am sure they could give sony a7III a good run for their money as they have better hardware/software stack to reuse from their smartphone ecosystem. i am 100% sure the nx1 28Mpix sensor downsampled to 4k will beat hands down the bmpc4k 8mpix sensor for details/resolution on a 4k screen but consumed on a 5" 1080p smartphone screen where resolution is less critical, bmpcc4k should have better color, we will see when it comes out.
  3. the weakest point of this camera will be resolution : with only 8 mpix on a bayer mask it means that yuv information will be interpolated in 4k. a 24mpix sensor that scales downs to 4k like sony a6500 will have 3x more details and it will be very easy to notice.
  4. swapping physically photo data out seems to come from the film roll paradigm, why swap out mass media when usb-c can transfer data as fast ? and if you shoot on the go, a 2gb m2 ssd = 4x 512mb sd or cf cards, do film shooter fill more than 4 cards in a day ?
  5. with raw recording at 1TByte/hour, a internal m2 slot for cheap m2 ssd would have been a much better choice (smaller volume than their choice of cf+sd slots and a 1TByte m2 ssd is only $230 so it is cheaper, offers larger capacities and it is much faster than sd or cf https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073SB2MXT/ref=twister_B07BXC53V5
  6. how can you say it is competitive as you don't know what will be on the market when it comes out at the end of the year (they say september but expect delays as usual with BM)
  7. the reason canon is crippling it's entry level 4k camera is simply because they have to upsell more expensive 4k cameras, if they give all the goodies with the entry level camera how are they going to sell the more expensive cameras in their line. sony also have many 4k cameras but they chose not cripple their entry level 4k capable cameras - it is different marketing strategies.

    NX2 rumors

only rumor i am afraid as samsung focus is still on smartphone market but let's hope it is true that samsung comes back in camera business because 1/ as a newcomer they will have to innovate in order to set them aside from existing player (like they did with nx1, first camera with aps-c size bsi sensor & h265) 2/ as a camera maker with a small line of camera they are more likely to give us more bang for the buck (hardware r&d cost is so high and it is so time consuming that you can only design one chip and if they have to sell 10 different camera in the lineup the only solution they have to differentiate and justify increasing price in the camera lineup is to artificially remove feature in the firmware, not specific to camera business, laptops play the same game). 3/ as a smartphone maker and as a chip maker samsung is in the best position than any other camera maker to deliver powerful hardware that can do a lot of processing in camera (oversampling, lut, noise reduction, 8k video ) go samsung go, kill canikon and give sony, fuji a good competition to push camera innovation and lower prices !!
  9. is there a 1:1 video mode in magic lantern ? i am looking for any camera with the highest vertical video resolution ( for 360 video) thanks.
  10. does the eye-AF works now in video ? (in the a6300 it was already there but only worked for photos)
  11. for those interested there is a nx500 + kit lens + 30mm f2 used for $456 (don't bid too high if you are not in a hurry because nx500+ kit lens new is sometime as low as $499 and the 30m f2 can be found new at $160) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-NX500-28-2-MP-Digital-Camera-Black-w-16-50mm-PZ-and-30mm-F-2-Lenses-/191838552932 no it takes more computations and more memory bandwidth to down-sample to 4k (down-sampling to 1440p only takes 2560*1440 pixel mix operations (something like a 3x3 matrix convolution) + 2560*1440 pixel writes ) - and my guess is that the bottleneck is memory bandwidth and not the cpu.
  12. is the 2.5k from full sensor on nx500 downsampled from 6.5k or is it doing line/pixel skipping ?

    Sony a6300 4k

a6300 only 8% cheaper than nx1 now that nx1 is back to $1100

    Sony a6300 4k

don't expect anything like that from sony, they have a pro 4k camera segment to protect, the only companies that could have given us the best bang for our buck ( such as 4k raw on usb3) are companies that do not have higher priced 4k camera segment to upsell ( black magic in the begining tried but they now have a higher price range of camera to protect, samsung tried with nx serie but failed as they are getting out of the camera market). let's wait for the next new comer to flip the market upside down - the obvious thing that will change everything is an open firmware where third party developers can add features inside the camera, again samsung started that but they failed (http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2013/05/28/redesign-your-own-camera-samsung-nx300-nx2000-source-code-released) - do you remember how expensive, crappy and limited where our digital phone services before the smartphone era with the app model, this is where we are now with the digital camera market.

    Sony a6300 4k

at the moment the samsung nx500 is $497 shipped with 16-50PZ, sure it is 4k cropped instead of being downsampled from 6k but the bitrate is 40% higher so the 4k image quality should be very close for 1/2 price (the small and sharp 30mm f2 pancake lens is also down to $154) (but the nx500 has a 15min max recording in 4k, is it 30 minutes max on the a6300 ?)

    Sony a6300 4k

58% smaller and 33% cheaper than a nx1 with 16% less resolution and 37% lower bit rate, seems like a nice compromise let's hope there will be less bugs than nx1
  17. also as the osmo will be used 99% of the time with a phone attached to frame your shoot, the total footprint osmo+phone is bigger than the footprint phone+ikan x3 gimbal (and for those who don't already have a 4k phone the one-plus-one phone is only $250 with 1/3" f2.0, it should be similar in low light to osmo, total price one-plus-one+ikan x3= $400, cheaper and more versatile as camera software on android evolves fast (we already have a 200mbit/s h264 4k with manual settings free android app))
  18. the phones we have in our pockets (we geeks have recent phones) are 1/2.6"-1/2.3" f1.8-f2.0 4k cameras with optical stabilization, in such low light should be better than the 1/2.3" f2.8 of the osmo so why don't we just buy a $150 3axis phone stabilizer http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1072867-REG/ikan_x3_x3_xtreme_handheld_gimbal.html ?
  19. interesting, doesn't it at least reduce the amplitude of the noise level in video ? on the nx1, downscale ratio is 3 (24Mpix(the cropped 16/9 image in the full 28Mpix sensor that is 4/3 ratio ) /8Mpix ) so the average of 3 pixels with the same "perfect color" gives ((color+noise1) + (color+noise2)+ (color+noise3))/3 = color +(noise1+noise2+noise3)/3 . even if from one frame to another the noise changes for each pixel the maximum varaiation of noise in time is statistically smaller with downsampling it is (noise1+noise2+noise3-noise4-noise5-noise6)/3 vs (noise1-noise2)/2 when there is no downscaling
  20. you are correct, noise level above 3200 iso is is the Achilles heel of the nx1, they don't seem to be able to fix it with the latest firmware updates, also you loose focus peaking in video with a passive adapter, no camera is perfect.
  21. yes same pixel pitch but larger total surface and from tony northrup testings there is no noise penalty when we downsample (this is the case of the nx1) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KYvp8PrCFc
  22. i am sorry but this s35 4k combination is weird at 800+650 $ why not choose a 1300$ nx1+24$ canon adapter it is cheaper and has better video quality, and for low light the extra stop of light you get from the speedbooster,it is equivalent to the bsi technology also giving a stop advantage for low light compared to non bsi sensors. (and for an extra 24$ you can also adapt nikon lenses )
  23. the 5% comes from the link given above : http://***URL removed***/articles/0794343949/wto-looking-at-moves-to-remove-30-minute-limit-from-digital-cameras
  24. the cost to have 2 different model in us and europe is not that big, they choose 30 min for all because people in europe by camera on the US market making their strategy inneficient ( you remember the dvd with the region protection )
