Looks like a great, if not perfect camera. It was on my to-get-list but, and this is a big but, it's almost useless for me :D There is no way I am going to transcode h265 files first to be able to VIEW the clips, let alone edit them. This will be a long and slow proces as well as h265 takes up enormous computing power. So what you are ending up with is even more storage space usage than with a camera that shoots native h264... By the time Premiere will be able to handle native h265 files directly, (1-2 years?), I will probably need to spend a lot of money on a new top of the line computer. H265 files are 10x more 'compressed' than h264, so editing the native clips would truly take a monster computer to do it. And you know the funny thing? If this camera had a h264 mode, I would buy it tomorrow.

Oh thanks! That makes the Speed Booster even more amazing. So my Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 is actually a f1.4 lens? Amazing.

Just a short question. I have the Speed Booster myself and I love it. But 1 thing was never really clear to me. It makes the lens wider by 0.71x. That is clear. It also increases illumination with 1 f-stop. That is clear also. But is that also in terms of DoF? Or only in terms of gathering light? So does a f2.8 DOF becomes the same as f2.0 DOF with a Speed Booster? Or does the DOF remain the same but does it gather the same light as f2.0? Back on topic. I have the Sigma 18-35mm and while it is not an old legacy lens in any way, it has a lot of character and doesn't look nearly as 'clinical' as my friends' Lumix 12-35mm. World of difference there. It's my favourite lens for sure.

I agree. And I am certainly not trying to be negative about this camera, I'm really interested in it! But for me it would be a huge problem having to transcode, because I shoot weddings. Sometimes I have to make a same-day-edit which is already too tight on the clock. Furthermore I can simply not transcode hundreds of clips after every shoot. For the rest everything looks like it is my dream camera, if the DR is better than my GH3's. And I'm sure that a 'simple' firmware update could bring us h.264 as an option.

So does the NX-1 have any recording modes, other than h.265?

But the question that remains is, is the camera also able to record in h.264 or anything that we CAN edit at the moment without proxies?

Just downloaded some H265 clips (not shot with Samsung NX1) and there is no way for me to even play back the clips. VLC player can't open them, Premiere CS6 can't open them. I really hope this camera also has other recording modes. Are h.265 clips even practical yet?

Is there also an option to shoot h.264 or AVCHD? I shoot weddings and sometimes have to do quick edits. And I'm not going to transcode hundreds of clips before I start editing. Or is native h.265 doable to edit in Premiere? Or simply not supported at all?

I suppose I can use my Sigma 18-35mm + Samyang 85mm with Nikon Mounts on the Samsung NX1 with an adapter, right? Like a Novoflex adapter so I can change the aperture with the adapter's ring? No need for the Speed Booster anymore than since this is already a super 35mm sensor. I'm really interested in the NX1 at the moment as an upgrade from the GH3.

I used to see it like this, but now I'm on the other side. I'm really happy that most people still buy the big-brand stuff and think it is the best. It's much better for me and my business when they do. People always ask me 'wow how did you get that sharp footage / nice slow-mo?' And my clients see the difference too. They don't care which camera I use, they just like how the footage looks. I have stopped sharing my techniques, lenses, etc. I have done it before and given the community back what I've learned but now I'm protecting my 'look'. If everyone knew how to shoot like I do, then what is my advantage? I say lets all promote the glorious Canon 7D Mk2!! All video enthusiasts should buy it! Great camera!

Very interesting! But in the real world, how do our computers manage the H.265 files? Doesn't it cost much more processing power to edit native h.265 clips? Because if it does, there wouldn't be any real advantage to recording at h.265 in the first place, right? But nonetheless I praise Samsung for pushing it further!

What have you been smoking? It's their job to give us what they can do? And I assume you want it in a cheap package also, right? Like a Canon 5Dm4 for €2500,00 with 12 bit 4:4:4 ProRes recording, 4k @ 200 fps, long battery life, build in ND's, and the like. Cause yes, today's technology is ready for this. Why aren't they giving it to us? Because: That would be the end of the capatalistic economy as we know it. First of all, companies don't owe us anything except a working product for a price that we are willing to pay. That's it. It's not their job to develop and 'give' the people things. It's their job to make money now, and in the future. If every company 'gave us' what we want and what is possible with their current technology, we would have already have 100 inch flatscreen TV's at home, 16-core super computers at home that cost 800 bucks, cars that massage your balls while you're driving, etc etc. But you know what, they'll save that for later. They release stuff in increments. The new i7 processor is 10% faster / more efficient than the previous. So we all buy that after skipping 1 or 2 generations. I'm 100% sure that Intel already could produce the latest chips around 5-8 years ago for the same costs / price. Let the market sort itself out. Panasonic is giving us much more for fewer money when it comes to video than Nikon, so video-enthusiasts are moving away from Nikon. Slowly, but it's happening. And you know what, Nikon doesn't care. Cause 95% of their customers are photographers. And those 48 MP camera's are great! Same for Canon. They don't care about those people who buy a 650D / rebel t4i for 500 bucks and shoot test videos of their cats and house with. That's not even a market big enough to consider. It's a stills camera with a video function, nothing more. If you want to shoot better video, buy our EOS C line. And that's what many serious people are doing anyway. They don't care if it's 5000 for a C100. As long as it works. Just to be clear, I'm with you on the same page. I would like the perfect camera for €1000,00 and I know they can do it. But why would they? I could also make wedding films for €200,00 and color grade every clip to perfection. But I don't. You want more? You pay more. Same difference.

As much as I agree with all of your points, asking these questions is simply useless. You're questions are not really questions, but you are just trying to make the same point with every question: "Look how far behind you are when it comes to video & technical advances compared to your competitors". Don't you see it?" It is rhetorical. Of course they know. They don't care. And you don't need to ask, you can see it from their current line up and releases. They are focussing on the photo market and gave up to compete on video. The only question you should ask is: "Why?" To make more money for a couple of years and then stop the business? A principal? Thinking they will appeal more to photographers if they don't have good video modes? To protect their C-line? (and thus be stupid?) For the rest I would save my breath. You're not going to change them. But we as buyers will.

Thanks Pablo. I understand what you mean, but it is still strange that VLC player gives me choppy playback of the 4K file, Premiere also does in the preview, but doesn't on a 4K timeline... Is that a codec issue? Or does the timeline 'gather more resources' or anything? Btw, Premiere can use 6.5 GB of my 8 GB memory. It wasn't using everything because I just had 2 clips on the timeline I guess.

I just downloaded some GH4 4K 100 mbps mov cliips to test if my PC could handle this future investment :) My findings were strange. When I open the clip with VLC player, it plays back very choppy after a couple of seconds. I imported the clip in Premiere CS6 to see what happens. When I play the clip back in the preview monitor, again it is choppy. Seems like the PC or the codec is not up for the task. However, if I right click on the clip and select 'create new sequence from clip' and put the clip on the timeline, it suddenly plays back great. No stutters, even at full resolution with multiple clips on top of each other... So what is going on here? Is there any method to get it to playback smoothly in the preview as well? I tried lowering the resolution but that didn't work. Also when I create a 1080p timeline and drag the file on it and rescale, the playback is choppy. So only creating a 4k sequence of the 4k clip plays back smooth in Premiere. Codec problem? Or just too crappy hardware? I admit that my PC is fairly out of date but it proved that it could at least play it back smooth on the timeline. Also, I have no problems with GH3 1080p 60p files. i5 2500k 8GB RAM (not the bottleneck here, only used 50%) GTX 660 (not the bottleneck here, only used 20%) Win 7 1 TB 7200 RPM Thoughts?

Due to a tax rule in my country I could get a pretty good deal on an investment of around 1750 euro's. :) That is, if I buy it before the end of this year. I mainly shoot weddings lately, aiming for the high end, and currently our team uses the GH3. Which was, until the GH4 was released, the one camera that had it all. Even the audio is more than decent and everyone loves our slow motion shots. I mainly shoot in 50p (PAL model) at 1080p and then conform in post to get butter smooth slow motion. Now of course upgrading to the GH4 would be a no-brainer due to this tax rule but I've read that the GH4 only does 4K in 24-30p right? So there is no 50p in 4K? So my questions are: - Is there a difference in quality in 50/60p 1080p of the GH4 vs the GH4? Is there more dynamic range for instance? - I've heard about the audio buzz problem in the GH4.. Does that still persists in currently released models? And do you hear it also, when no mic is plugged in? - Is there any other large sensor camera under 2K which records 50/60p in 4k? Or anything that will be released before the end of this year? Canon 7D Mii? Anything else on the way? It's just that it would be a pity that 3 months after I buy the GH4, something else will be released with 4k 50p with better dynamic range. Cause that would be the true upgrade path for me. Any suggestions?

Yes f2.8 is too slow for dark scenes during weddings. ISO 1600 is the max I want to go with the GH3, and f2.8 simply doesn't cut it. The Sigma 18-35 with the Speed Booster has effectively an aperture f1.2, which is much much better.

I recently bought a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and my friend bought the Lumix 12-35mm and the 35-100mm. We both use the GH3 when we shoot weddings together, and use the exact same picture styles. (a custom picture style based on natural with sharpness at -4) What I noticed after comparing several clips, is that the Sigma 18-35mm is not as sharp / crisp as the Lumix lenses. Not even in the center, and I'm using a Metabones Speed Booster. I thought that, at least in theory, the lenses would be pretty equal in terms of sharpness from the reviews I've read.. Now I don't really mind this because I actually like the slightly softer look from the Sigma in comparison with the almost 'clinically sharp' Lumix lenses. But I just wonder if there is something wrong with my copy of the lens or the Speed Booster. Or is it because the GH3 'optimizes' the Lumix lenses with electronic corrections that you can't turn off or whatever. Mind you, my clips are still pretty sharp but when compared directly to the clips shot with the Lumix lenses, they don't pack the same punch. Any explantions or possible causes? Or are the Lumix lenses just that good?

I have this lens. It does click at the end of the focus range, on both sides. This is a 'sign' that it doesn't focus any further / closer after that point. It shouldn't however, click at any other point in the focus range.

I really start to think that this is just how this lens is build. Although I found 1-2 people reporting the same 'problem', I've heard more people say that theirs doesn't do this. I just pointed the lens at me, and looked at the lens opening while turning the zoom ring. When zooming in, the 'hole' naturally becomes larger. A longer focal lenght, needs a bigger aperture opening so that's normal. But when I get to arround 28mm, the opening seems to 'exponetially' become larger. Because not only does the 'inner ring' shift, but at that focal length the outer aperture also opens further. This is visible at all aperture settings, but moreso at F3.5 and onwards. I'm pretty sure this is what is causing the extra light to come in starting at +- 28mm. Now the only question that remains is... Is this normal for this lens? Or is it a 'defect' in mine and I do I receive too few light at focal lenghts under 28mm....

Thanks Andrew. I'm not exactly sure what you mean. But first, are we talking about the same problem? Indeed, the lens and the Speed Booster are not a 100% fit. When I put a bit pressure on the lens and twist it, it 'clicks' and there is an increase in brightness. However, this is not related to this problem I think. Even when I zoom, while pushing the lens in the opposite direction, this problem occurs. It might be related, but I don't think so. I just tied the screws a bit firmer. I mean those screws on the Speed Boosters metal mount. Do you mean those? Or did you mean something else? Thanks for helping. Really appreciated.

Yes everything at manual. I'm using a Panny GH3 and a Speed Booster. Image is really good though. Just wondering if something is wrong and if I'm getting too few light at certain aperture + focal lenght combinations. I found someone over at the Dpreview forum who tested after me, and found similar results...
