  1. That video is such a favorite. The children and landscapes are beautiful. I found his article (the last one in the series of three) very informative. His 4-wheeler shot, the one where he rides down the street holding the drone, is what sold me on the Phantom's 3-axis stabilizer. I have a trip scheduled in August and plan on using this exact setup... I am also disappointed that the new GoPro model is not available.

The Panasonic and Sony action cams both seem nice, but I have more faith (at this point) with the GoPro.

Bloom's ability to color correct a video such as this is probably the most important aspect that goes unnoticed (IMO).

His advice suggests keeping the drone close, with simple moves.

  2. Hello everyone

I'm wanting to film a short Sci-Fi film for one of my Uni projects and I'm wanting to use an Anamorphic lens to get a more cinematic feel. I'll be using Canon DSLR's, in particular, the 60D, 7D and maybe a 5D if I can get my hands on one. But until now, I've had no experience whatsoever with using, buying etc. an Anamorphic DSLR lens. I've been looking at what Vid-Atlantic with their Anamorph Filters, but from what I can gather, that doesn't give a true Anamorphic look to the film. Another issue I'm worried about is learning how to properly use an anamorphic lens as when I've watched various videos of people using them, there's vignetting and focussing issues. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on what I should do/buy?

    Thanks for all your help

I wish you real success with your program and look forward to seeing your upcoming work regardless of what equipment you decide upon. All of my research and input from the EOSHD members led me to the SLR Anamorphot. I really can't say enough good things about this lens. It's a clean image and focusing is thoughtless. Andrew's book is a must have and will save you a lot of time. Sean Maxwell's input and instructional video is really something to consider as well considering his commercial experience. Good luck to you.
  3. Keep shooting with the GH4 Aaron... I really enjoy your work!

It's a fun camera and the next model is rumored to have a better frame rate for 4k. I noticed that the unit seems to be constructed well and thought-out. Their abilities with compression are also impressive. I noticed a 3D or dual mount was offered today, which had me thinking about a comment that Vincent Laforet made recently... he said that Japan and China consumers are really really into 3D.

  4. There is tons of advice via Google search for fungus removal. However in your case with a potentially expensive lens, the key issue is removal of the elements, some of which will be glued in.

Removal, cleaning and subsequent alignment is a job best left for someone who knows what they are doing, not for first timers on this optic.

Gus, who does all of Ken Rockwell's work, is a local guy who is very reputable and talented. His work is reasonably priced for what he does.

  5. Formatt make a 1/2 clear Supermist filter it is less harsh than the Tiffen Promist 1/4

I bought 2 last week and they are very good , I have Tiffen Promist 1/4 and 1/2 and the Formatt is of a similar nature bit nicer on skin tones for me

give it a try they are not expensive on ebay, I got mine from here

Excellent find and thanks for posting. Curious to see how well it works, if I can find one that fits. How often or what percent of the time would you say you are using this filter?

  6. As many before me have mentioned, I would decide on what camera you're going to buy before choosing lenses. The obvious influence it will have on your lens choices will be the camera's lens mount (EF, MFT, etc.)

I shoot on the 5D Mark III and primarily use zoom lenses like the 24-105 F4 L IS for video these days. It all depends on what you're going to be shooting. I work on a lot of corporate jobs and the like where the shooting is run and gun and I don't have time to balance a steadicam or even think about laying some track. Therefore, the Image Stabilisation from the 24-105 works in tandem with my shoulder mount to get nice, floaty coverage. It also saves me running around like a headless chicken to get wides followed by close ups - I just zoom.

If, however, you're shooting films or are in a studio a lot and have the time to swap out lenses and change the lighting, then primes are much more the way to go.

    Very good!

This just went on pre-order and I am waiting to see what the quality will be like...

  7. Sennheiser MKH-416 - Short Shotgun Interference Tube Mic. It's awesome. Float it a few inches over the subjects head just off frame for interviews and it's every bit as good as a lav. You'll need a rig to do get it in the right spot... or a PA.

    I use a c-stand when I'm on my own.

That said, even a cheaper (ME67) shotgun will capture passable audio with proper PLACEMENT. Honestly, without putting the mic in the right spot all your audio will sound bad, lav or shotgun.

It's not a difficult skill to learn how to engineer decent audio. I'm constantly amazed so many people in video production don't actively study it.

Very helpful response. What about the idea of a small mic stand in front of the person being interviewed... it wouldn't be in the shot. Would I get the same results instead of booming overhead? Is it simply better to mic up high?
  8. Here's my experience:

I use both ZOOM devices. And while my H4N is perfectly useable with my Sony ECM-77B wired lav mic, the H1 with the Sennheiser EW100 wireless system actually delivers superior --and very clean low noise floor audio.

Plus the flexibility of wireless shouldn't be overlooked. It comes in handy. Being mobile with audio is a valuable tool.

I see your point. I'm rethinking much of my original idea though about working with a lavaliere. I'll be interviewing much older and affluent Jewish women and I can't say that I am comfortable with wiring them for sound in a way that doesn't show the mic. I also feel uneasy about possible ruffle from clothes and how to fix if it were to happen with these ladies. Thus, my research going forward seems to point towards a shotgun mic of sorts. I would appreciate any input or experience from the good people of this board regarding this route, I am open for suggestions.
  9. I looked over and researched all that you have posted and I count it all a real wealth!

I'm having some trouble understanding, due to inexperience, what is meant by...

"The YN-300 II and YN-600 are "bicolor" and more versatile, however they are effectively 1/2 brightness when using the daylight LEDs (I'm using lights in the daylight 5000+ K range). "

I'm actually planning on purchasing the YN-300 regardless, just curious what is meant by 1/2 the brightness.

Any information or experience you have with the battery life would be helpful to know. To see that you have posted a link for an AC adapter is interesting :)

Also, what percentage of the time do you have a light such as this mounted to the camera?

  10. FilmBrute, I appreciate your input and the idea you mentioned of using a lavalier microphone... this make a lot of sense to me.

Do any of you involved with this board feel there is any real noticeable difference in quality between the Zoom H1 vs the Zoom H4N?

I understand build quality and the available options are different with each model... but at the end of the day, does the H4N sound that much cleaner and/or better?

My thoughts were to spend more on a good microphone and settle with the $100 H1. Does this seem like a good idea?

  11. Excellent Mohamed, I really appreciate your willingness to share your work.

I came across another video today and I place your film and this one together for being unique and creative.

Curious if you used the full Twixtor suite or the light version. Regardless, I "catch your vision" and wish you the best.

  12. The SLR anamorphot arrived today, which was very quick shipping from CA.

I'm really looking forward to shooting with it, but no camera yet and Panasonic is now saying mid-May.

I didn't purchase the full kit, which I may regret. I saw later where their specific adapters were "calibrated".

I wonder about these due to low costs... do any of you think it's worth trying?

I'm worried that I might have made a mistake in purchasing the lens linked above. I hope not.

SLR adapter should arrive this week, so I will know more when both the adapter and lens arrive.

I understand that I will be able to control aperture with the speed booster, so that is encouraging.

Panasonic billed me two weeks ago, but still no camera yet.

Do any of you think I should "step back and punt" by sending this lens back and purchasing an older prime?

PS. When it comes to pancake lenses, the specs on the lens below sure has me thinking (it's very thin)!
