  1. So can you use these on a normal Helios 44-2 or just the Trump & your refurbished ones?
  2. Personally I've never used it. I can't be sure if its ever been used on stuff I've filmed & not edited - its not really a conversation I care to have or am able to have sometimes. Since using the pocket, there is absolutely no need whatsoever to denoise anything. However, I've gone back to some 60D footage that I shot a few years ago & am finding for some shots I really only need some film grain. Also, it has made me consider alternative ways to edit/show the footage - fool people into thinking some of the footage looks better than it actually does.
  3. LMAO! Answering stupid forum posts after I'm a few beers into my Friday night - hurt feelings? No, just venting! Just can't be bothered with idiots, who can't even post properly or give good examples. Its amazing how many people claim they know how to use cameras & then, well...they don't. I bet they think that they could just pick up a RED or Alexa and it will all be just fine & dandy - I mean they cost so much...! You can push the pocket, in RAW or ProRes, quite hard, but everything has its breaking point - for £600, you've got more than enough wiggle room (not that you should ever need it!). This has happened on BMCuser with the exact same, probably, non-problem.
  4. WOW! Yes that does look big - nice! I love my 54, just because it is bigger & gives you the weight that you need to get steady shots handheld - under arm or over the shoulder. I feel this need for small is so counter productive - fixed shots on a [proper] tripod just can't be beat. The only small attachment that i'll consider using (and am so glad I kept a hold of it) is the Widescreen 2000 - yes you can kinda focus through it (with practice), you do need diopters & you do need to stop down sometimes. All those sterile sharp cheap projector lenses just leave me cold - they really don't have anything to offer. Rich, really stoked for you - I guess a lot of blood, sweat & tears has gone into the Oliviascope. Does this mean that you'll eventually make some normal lenses?
  5. So many F**KHeads about! People post sub standard screen grabs & no info about what they were trying to do - unrealistic shit stress test in the first place. Then you go out of your way to upload a DNG file so that they can compare with what they have. Then you get this sort of shit from them. Yeah F**K OFF!
  6. http://www.richardgaleoptics.uk/olivia-scope-15x/ Might have taken one apart & thought it might be easier to just make one?
  7. No I use them as a guide to begin with, so I know what's going on. Then I turn them off & adjust a little by sight. When I got taught to use a camera at the BBC, I was told to use zebras between 70-80% to begin with & then as time goes by you'll just know what's right just by looking. I started to do this again when I began using the BMPCC & now only use Zebras as a reference point - mostly done by eye. As far as grading goes, if you get it right in camera then there should be no need to mess about too much in post (this is all from a Doc type shooting POV). Recently, I've shot a lot of Black skintones & that is really hard to get right - my fall back is to now take a picture of people with my phone so that i've got a neutral reference guide.
  8. But that guy seemed so happy that he could sit on his arse & use the AF! You just wait & see, someone will make a film using the AF & it'll be sooooooo big that the idiot who made it will be given a Hollywood deal........blah blah blah.........and produce another piece of shit movie.......
  9. This actually looks like a better story/film than Episode VII, which was so average it was shameful & slightly insulting to both the viewer & the franchise! I was worried that after Godzilla, Edwards would make another POS - impressed.
  10. For RAW I've started to put them at 100%, it used to be 90% (sometimes still is). For ProRes, its 90 or 80% - depends how much light there is.
  11. Might have been trying so hard to implement GS, that they skipped a few steps for the first FW release - the pocket took a few updates before it became what it is today. Its a shame, but hardly unexpected.
  12. Have a play with the original DNG & see what you think - hope it helps. It does have a lot of noise & is certainly not clean, but I don't see any FPN. I'm sure if someone has Neat Video they could clean it up, but if you have to push something 5 stops etc. its never going to look nice or be realistically useable.
  13. Here, try this on for size & so you can compare with yours - from my pocket really low light test (its anamorphic so change the vertical height - divide by 1.5). Shot with a Nikon 24mm @ f2.8 & Isco 54. This is stressed & I would never shoot like this, grade or even use this. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/90827273/Pocket%20Low%20Light.dng I raised the first by 5 stops, raised the highlight compression to 16, moved brightness to 60, Local contrast to 10 & contrast to 5 - all done in RPP. The second, I did the same but took some contrast out. This is RAW so ISO/ASA doesn't count
  14. Can't believe this has gone on for 7 pages! We need Zak back to inject a little sanity into the proceedings... But it hasn't for the Canon range & so that guy thought it was a great feature.
  15. Yeah, I understood that it was an extreme stress test - I'm always calm. I never use ASA 1600 - just too much noise & so you need a plugin like Neat Video. Use the ETTR rules: put zebras to 90% in ProRes & 100% for RAW. When you get peaking on your screen dial it down to taste (ie. if you want to blow a light source, blow it etc...) & then you'll get less noise. Just remember that these cameras are not like DSLRs at all & so there's a learning curve involved - forget everything that you've learnt with a DSLR & start again. Then again, there might be something wrong with these new cameras - but BM does come out with FW fixes, so don't panic.
  16. That's not a normal shooting situation & you really shouldn't expect to be getting anything worth while by doing that. Sorry, but there's nothing wrong with your camera. You're being totally unrealistic about what you can achieve. Now do the same test again with just that lamp on or even a big candle - that would be a minimum of light, not a few leaks coming from the cracks of the shutters.
  17. They are nice & do their best to solve problems. As with all electronic devices, there's always going to be some bad apples & the internet just makes things seem to be a lot worse than they really are. Just remember that these cameras are not low light monsters, they do need a minimum of light. The image that they produce is really so much better than a DSLR, but they do have their limitations just like a DSLR does & people tend to forget that.
  18. Love the contrast between those 2 Ikonoskop films - perhaps the the Ice Cream one is better, but for an amateur DP, I do like the one by Thomas Bangalter too - 2 different looks for sure. Super 8 filmed properly, with lots of light can be very clean & the 4k scan claim is really interesting. Don't think film is going anywhere in a hurry, but finding someone to process it will be the biggest challenge. But i suppose for the few places that will continue to support it, and by that I mean process it, they will make a killing - even though it'll be a PITA for those filming who don't live close.
  19. This is interesting... Never seen it on the Pocket, but I don't use ASA 1600. Yes i've shot in darkish situations, but never encountered it - perhaps I just don't underexpose that much or try to lift stuff to the point of no return. I think that you'll find that most people who are shooting in low light are using some sort of noise reduction on their footage & this almost certainly hides noise/grids etc... The only thing that I've encountered with the Pocket is the Purple Grid pattern when pointed at a strong light & it only occurs when the light source is to one side - but once you grade & render the footage it vanishes. There's a lot of discussion on BMCuser/BMforum about the 4.6ks purple fringing & the FPN in the shadows - user error or the odd faulty sensor/camera, it really hard to tell because not enough people are experiencing these problems (it does seem that BM has acknowledged the purple fringing as a problem). Not defending BM, but they're cheap cameras & a new/small firm. Didn't RED have loads of problems to begin with & still does in certain situations. The Alexa can produce the Black Spot sun problem too. No digital camera is going to be perfect, that's why there's the constant debate about why Film is better.
  20. I love the Coney Island video above...but i'll raise you that Ikonoskop video, with this one - made by one of the guys from Daft Punk, just...
  21. No there's nothing wrong with you, i'm LMAO most of the time! Its a shame sarcasm doesn't really translate online... But seriously, this function is an idiot's wet dream, it beats 4k 8bit recording technology hands down.
  22. So that blew my mind too! It'll sell loads, just for that function alone!
  23. If you've got about 4K to spend on camera gear, then you rent or you hire a camera OP/ small DP who has their own gear - get it done by a professional who will make your film look so much better than you could. There are plenty of good people out there that will work for less than their normal rate, if they like you & your project. Also, if you go down the rental route, don't accept the list price - haggle! There's plenty of places that can/will be understanding & do you a deal. In this day and age, when you can pick up a few G7s (like Andy Lee has done for the film he is shooting) & go for it, some rental houses might take a hit in the hope that if you make it, you might come back as a repeat customer. This is always worth thinking about, because it is highly likely that a rental house has already made their money back on all their gear that isn't brand new - so some money coming in is better than the equipment just sitting on a shelf. If you've got a budget, then spend it wisely in order to make the best film possible - buying, when you've got a 4k camera budget, is a mugs game. If you've already got a half decent camera, then use it & spend the money you do have on props/lighting or, here's a novel idea, paying a few hard up actors (just because they aren't household names, doesn't mean that they can't act!). Finally, if you've got someone to give you money to make a film, you certainly DO NOT go out & blow it on buying yourself some camera gear.
  24. Interesting...so perhaps people aren't finding it that much of a step up after all or the better RS & 60fps has caused the sensor to take a slight hit. So JBs statement that this isn't a Pocket replacement are correct - the Pocket, even with its very few downsides, is still a unique animal & will remain so.
