Emanuel reacted to Davide Roveri in Sony A7R II official user thread
@ajay I think you misread my statement! :-) AF performance in video mode with native glass is very good and it's much improved compared to the a7S both in terms of speed and functionality (now you can choose the tracking sensitivity and speed for instance)
My issue was with the adapted canon lens which is not quite as fast in video mode and struggled at longer focal length, hope this clarifies your concern! :-)
@Emanuel I read about the overheating issues Dan encountered, I haven't had any issues so far but i generally never record for more than 5-10 mins continuously so i can't say is not happening.. I will do a test and get back to you on this! :-)

Agree.
The URSA Mini should be compared to the FS7, C300 Mk II and RED Scarlet Dragon, if anything.

Hello!
I haven't slept much last night but here it is, the α7R II low light test! (i also posted my initial thoughts at the beginning but feel free to skip to the test if you get bored!)
The results are very surprising, whereas during the day i couldn't really spot a difference in quality between the FF and S35 modes things are completely different when the lights go down: the S35 mode is vastly superior to the Full Frame, they are not even in the same league! I don't know if that is only the result of the better readout from the sensor in S35 or there is some noise reduction wizardry happening in real time but the output from the S35 mode is way cleaner.
And not only the S35 mode is cleaner, we're actually talking about α7S levels of performance! (at least up to ISO 25,600 which is the maximum for the α7R II)
don't believe that? I included a low light shootout with the Queen of the night itself!
In the end i decided not to include the 1080 samples because they're quite bad, way worse then the both the 4K modes so it's definitely better to downscale when a 1080 output is required.
What else to say.. i'm very impressed.. this camera keeps getting better and better by the minute!!
Today i'm gonna shoot some real word run and gun footage to see how the Steady Shot performs and how is the footage when graded, needless to say i have very high expectations now!
Thanks for watching!
ps. i just noticed how badly YouTube compression affects the video so I uploaded a better version here if you want to have a better look!

Emanuel reacted to Nick Hughes in anti moire filter yes or no
The first time I ever recognized aliasing was after reviewing footage from a shoot in the woods. It was fall/winter so the trees were bare and the branches were aliasing heavily. To be fair, we were shooting 720p60 on footage on the 6D, so there probably would have been aliasing on a white wall, but it can happen out in nature. Still, it's a lot less likely than when you're surrounded by power lines and brick walls.

Not sure if you've seen this or not but users have posted detailed comparisons. I would definitely get one b/c the pocket seems useless on alot of shots with the moire and aliasing.

Trying out the 100/120 fps in real life, shots I'm interested in. Trying to find weakness in the image like aliasing etc.
Very impressed so far:

Emanuel reacted to Davide Roveri in Sony A7R II official user thread
Hello everybody!
Today I recorded a number of test scenes trying to cover as many of the video modes as possible (i've checked the different pictures profiles both in FF and S35 mode as well as the various 1080p speeds all the way up to 120fps).
I'm gonna try to put together a video tonight (there's a lot of material!) but for now i've uploaded two clips straight off the card for you guys to check, both 4K, same scene, one is in FF mode and the other one in S35.
Settings as follows:
- Slog2/Sgamut (detail -7)
- ISO800 (minimum iso for Slog2 on the a7rII)
- WB Cloudy
- Sony/Zeiss FE4/16-35 @ 24mm/f8
ps. ignore the file date, i just realised i set the camera clock two days behind!!
here's the link to download the clips: http://we.tl/xNEDXe3WId
First impressions are generally positive: the camera feels very well in the hand (massive improvement over the a7s design) everything went smoothly, (although the software feels just a tiny bit slower than on the a7s but it's the first revision so it still might need to be polished a bit) the camera gets quite a bit warm during 4k recording but didn't have any problems (to be honest London is quite chilly at the moment which may helps!) :-)
Power consumption seems on par with the a7s, the EVF is wonderfully massive and bright, not a big fan of the new locking mode dial (you have to keep the centre button pressed to be able to turn it, i prefer the GH4 design where the dial can be left lock or unlocked)
In order to record 4K video you need a UHS Speed Class 3 SD card otherwise you get a warning on the LCD. (i've used a Transcend W95/R60 64gb and it recorded perfectly)
Last but certainly not least it is finally possible to assign the movie record to a custom button of your choice, REJOICE!!! :-)
Thanks for reading, have a good evening everybody!

Plenty of stuff to cover indeed but I'll do my best to put together a thorough and informative review guys! For now I uploaded a short unboxing video on my blog page... now I better charge the batteries and catch some sleep, tomorrow is gonna be a busy day! :-)

Full frame vs APS-C mode.
High ISO.
Rolling shutter.
Color rendering in all available color matrices.
Resolution.
Over/under exposure test. See how the sensor/codec responds to bringing up underexposed footage and bringing down overexposed footage.
Highlight/shadow rolloff. See how the camera renders a normally exposed scene with one or two very dark shadows and another with one or two bright highlights.

Awesome! Rolling shutter test, rolling shutter test, rolling shutter test...
EDIT: Moire and aliasing too. Thanks!

I've just picked up an early shipment of the camera here in London! I'll do a field test and an evolving review over the next few days on my blog if anybody's interested! :-)

Thank you Emanuel for posting those links!!!
Ive found that this gentleman:
has graciously included a link to his original files for download! check it out
how do you guys think this early rx10II/rx100IV footage compares to other manifestations of slog2?

Emanuel reacted to Cinegain in ImageVision Z camera
Yeah it does (JPEG/RAW DNG). I happen to know that '1600万' means 16MP.
- (ah, the site is changeable to English as well though)
The footage on the Kickstarter page looks shockingly bad for trying to sell us on this product that's all about video... But the downloadable promo vid which I linked to actually looked fairly promising. There were just some points when it was painful to see some weird compression side effects, especially in the scene with the boats there's a weird static overlay that doesn't refresh. Don't think it's my computer, but I also do not think it's the camera, I think it's the export.
Anyways. It's exciting to see something new. It's cool like a GoPro, for having something small to shoot with, secondary angles, especially for action/aerial kind of stuff. But then has the up in sensor and you can pick the lenses according your needs! Would be cool to see an actionproof housing for the Pana 20mm and 14mm though (for mounting on cars, skateboards, or have it on you when skiing or take it with you on a dive).
You might as well compare it to the new Blackmagic Micro Cameras: the Cinema and Studio 4K. But you know, they aren't really the action cams... they lack built-in wireless connectivity as well as a screen, which you would have to add additionally. That wouldn't only make it bulky... but also a more expensive choice. I do think there's a place for something like this. I hope they can pull it off.

Emanuel got a reaction from Mat Mayer in Sony RX10 M2 - first part of my review and a mini-comparison with the A7S and Canon 1D C
Nothing special in this case, here goes anyways:
On Youtube: "This is just an early test clip. The dynamic range of S-log2 is almost like shooting RAW photos. However, color tuning seems to be much more difficult than expected. Further exploration on more proper grading is still needed."

I saw someone complaining on dpreview that the RX100iv shut down because of overheating after just two minutes while shooting 4K. So some assurances about the RX10ii would be great.

Thanks Emanuel. On my iPad the RX10ii looks terrible with banding and other crap. I hope Andy has not forgotten about his tests so we can see all the settings and side by side comparisons.

Always FF equivalent. 35mm because it is still photography world, not cine standards. Cine 35mm or S35 is normally associated to crop in still photography. Crop format (1.3x, 1.6x etc) came much later than FF. So, 24-200mm in FF.
