The GH2 was the last GH Panasonic will ever sell me, the last DSLR/Mirrorless I'll ever buy to shoot anything but stills with.  I find nothing appealing about the GH4 or the Sony.  I'll never buy another compressed camera (lossy, h264 or variants), one that tops out at 422 or needs another box to shoot RAW.  BMD has done nothing to sway my interest in their products and these new cameras only solidify my resolve that if I can't have an Alexa it'll be a Blackmagic.

I use this too. I grew up with SoundForge and ACID for audio, so Vegas was the first editor i used.

Fucking masterpiece. Looks like it was shot on film. Great story, great lighting, great shot composition.

If forced to nitpick, i would say that the opening shots in the graveyard were not as strong as everything that followed.

Use handheld only when you have a very good reason to.  And don't compare handheld shots to static, compare them to slides, pans, tilts, ..etc.

The only thing we can expect from the Canon Cinema line is a price way above what the specs are worth.  C200 - 8 grand, C400 - 15 grand. Awesome. Cannot wait to not buy any of these.

A C200 with a prores codec would be a beautiful thing indeed.   Will the price will be that "entry level" though? I expect it will be similarly priced to the current C100 if not slightly more.   Of course, entry level is all relative isn't it?

It looks as though Canon is really going to try to move dslr video shooters over into buying something from the C series.  Can't say I blame them,  they've got the dslr market pretty well covered as far as dominating sales.

I am amazed what other blogs (PetaPixel, Planet5D) consider as front page news.

This kind of stuff generates clicks. Brain dead, but it is click bate nonetheless. That makes money in the long run.

I am so sick of this kind of gimmicky, zero fact or imagination based click bate.

I hope Blackmagic refuse to replace the camera on principal. The guys posting this have lost Blackmagic business and it might not even have been a legitimate battery fault.

    Hi guys,

We just shot this video with the BMCC, Metabones Speedbooster, Nikon Lenses and Iscorama 54MC.
RAW files were developped in After Effects CS6 (with Camera Raw) to Prores444 2400/1350. Color grading was done in AE.

Please let us know what you think, we'd love to get some feedback.

    Cheers,
    Mihnea

Here's something I'd like to get feedback for from all you creative types. What methods do you use when coming up with ideas for your craft? Do you find yourself too distracted by the noise of things like instagram, twitter, Facebook, etc? How do you stay focused and make your work a reality?

Have they scored the Alexa? I don't think so. I guess it's because the Dragon is marketed as stills also? They might as well run that test too.

The compression algorithm it's not important here. I did some synthetic tests (>post #118) simulating a best case scenario (a full 4K 4:4:4 8-bit image to a 2K 4:4:4 32-bit). I've tried different scaling algorithms and even adding noise doesn't give us any extra colour information.
We technically get an image with increased bit depth(since we're blending some pixels), but it doesn't translate in smoother tonality or better colours.

I'd really like us to settle on an acronym for the thing. It's the Blackmagic Production Camera. BMPC. All this nonsense about BMCPC, BM4K, BM 4K, BMPCC4K. Blah.

    Lets talk about art.

The example posted by Miller is too soft. Making the entire video soft is not beautifull, its a flaw. Whats the point of using expensive lenses to deliver a soft video?? You can soften a skin texture, but making the entire scene soft is wrong. The video will look like a low resolution out of focus video. With high end codecs, like raw, you can make the skin look soft and sharpen the eyes, for example. Eyes need to look sharp, otherwise the person will look lifeless and the video will look like a distant dream. He is also throwing away good dynamic range. He is blowing out the face of the main subject. She is like a pin up girl, but he graded her like a zombie shot on a low dynamic range camera. Her skin tone is green. One thing is to add a graded color to the scene, to create a mood, the other is to add a color cast that makes the skin tone look horrible.

I said it once and I will say it again. Applying pre-set looks like mojo, film convert tools, LUTs etc are not the way to do it. Grading is REALLY easy. You dont need those tricks.

And here is my simple grading for commercial use.

    What did I do?

    - Made her skin look soft
    - Gave her a pin-up skin tone
    - Increased the sharpness and contrast of her eyes, to make them stand out
    - Changed her eye color, because I like blue
    - Added a lot of saturation in her lips, to create a sexy look
    - Increased the sharpness and the saturation of the yellow, to make her hair stand out
    - Added some split toning (blue and purple) while mantaining her skin tone

Now I can see me gaining the contract for the commercial, while James grading would be only usable for an underground alien movie.
