TC got a reaction from Mondo in SlashCAM conclude Blackmagic Cinema Camera review, compares to Canon C300
You can't compare the 'ludicrousness' of 11 stops of dynamic range recorded in 8-bit at 50Mbps to 13 stops of dynamic range recorded in 12-bit raw at 1.1Gbps.  Sorry, you just can't.

And Dragon boasts 15+ stops of dynamic range and 6k resolution, which comfortably beats Sony. That is what I base my statement on.

Yea, the RED-One-M boasted 12 stops and was measured around 9-10. RED boasts, it's what they do.

    Sony WILL hit 14 stops.

Regarding your point... Sony is newer technology, yes, and better technology... It is nothing for RED to be ashamed of, just the nature of the beast.

As for RED being super generous, great amazing guys. Yea, they have made some cool moves, but, sensor upgrades aside (and probably expensive new SSDs, modules etc to work with the sensor).... Those days are over. They have just as many ways to squeze you for a $ as Sony or anyone else.

And to note.... I am saving my money for a high end camera and RED may well get my $$$s.... I couldn't care less about the logo on the side, or the business choices they make... As long as what is important to me is there, I will buy.

Solid announcement from Sony. But I don't think either are revolutionary. I think they are where people would expect them to be, given the current state of the technology. I feel that Sony are a year or two behind Red on the signal processing side (don't forget the Epic has been around two years now with similar specs). Canon, despite having a good sensor in the C100/300/500, look to be 5 years behind in terms of the electronics and codecs behind the sensor.

Hey, you missed the real news today! Canon has announced the S110, the SX160 IS, the G15, the SX 500 IS, and the SX 50 HS. And some of them are available in red. This is true innovation.

It is the camcorder announcements that are interesting. And the conclusion is simple.

Canon is dead. Sony has arrived.

Good times indeed. Canon are not getting my money. Blackmagic is.

But what next from Canon? C200: same electronics again, but 35Mbps for $12,000? C50: same electronics again, but plastic body and no clean HDMI out for $5000?

Actually, the more I think about this camera, the more I think the biggest drawback is the price.
Yes, it is not a complete disaster. It may even offer the best image quality (for stills) of any camera of its size currently on the market. It would, though, take you 30 seconds of fiddling with the touch screen before you can take any photos. :-)

Same size camera with a proper shutter speed dial, jog wheel and 2012 sensor and they have a winner.
